Membership Committee I am delighted to report to the club one of our most enthusiastic members, Kym Green, has requested his membership status be changed from a Corporate Member to a Full Member of our club. Kym has also indicated his original membership category will be filled by another member from 5EBI. Congratulations Kym. John Madigan Chairman Change Over Dinner President Elect Randolph Alwis has advised our Change Over Dinner will be held at The Public Schools Club, East Tce, Adelaide, on Friday 1 July Further details will be advised in the next addition of the Bulletin. Previous Meetings Meeting 2297, 28 April Speaker: Kyra Glasby Topic: The Barefoot Initiative Review Peter Thompson Kyra is a young South Australian who is the co-founder of a charitable organisation The Barefoot Initiative working in Ethiopia assisting in the development of sustainable projects as initiated by local communities. The main area of action is the hot Northern districts called the Afar Triangle, inhabited by mainly nomadic pastoralists, their livelihood based on herds of cattle, goats and, most importantly, camels. Kyra told us that although the land is dry, it is very fertile and recently irrigation systems have been developed, unfortunately outside entrepreneurs have taken ownership and the resulted wealth, whilst the local people are employed as poor farm workers. A very important move was made last April with villagers combining in their own irrigation scheme which has been such a huge success that it is now being expanded. Some of the many projects that The Barefoot Initiative has helped to develop are: a self-contained Health Centre water carts designed and manufactured to help the villagers with the cartag of water for 2 kms from the source midwifery and female health training a bakery and outlet shop. A major initiative with great benefits in the future, is the training as nurses in the city of young local lads who will return to their village upon completion of their course. Local ownership of all projects is essential and to this end regular meetings are held, with tribal elders being present, where new ideas are discussed and agreed to before being commenced. Nothing is done unless resources are available. Again members were fortunate to be able to hear from a young dedicated and resourceful woman who looked outside her normal sphere to help the less fortunate of the world. (continued on the following page...)

(...continued) A Club and District 9500 Grant was presented to Dr James Meucke by President Elect Randolph Attendance There were 15 members present. Guests: Visiting Rotarian Dennis Young Brisbane Mid- City, James Meucke and Alex Karantonis invited by Edan. Apologies: Tom, Sioux, George, Geoff French and Catherine. Even if you re on the right track, you ll get run over if you just sit there. Review Ashleigh Lorraine At the meeting on 28 April, vice-president Randolph Alwis and International Director, Ashleigh Lorraine, presented Dr James Muecke with a cheque for $5508. Dr Muecke is Chairman for the Sight For All Foundation which has the aim of improving the life of others in third world countries by improving their vision. Rather than carry out surgery on eyes, which is done by many other benevolent groups, Sight For All supports research, provides advice and gives training to third world doctors who can then go back to their country and improve their inhabitants chances of a better life through better vision. Countries such as Bangladesh, Burma, Vietnam, Sri Lanka and Ethiopia amongst others, are included in the project. Specifically, Dr Muecke said that the funds provided by Adelaide West and District 9500 would be used to bring two doctors from Bhutan to Adelaide who would then go back to their country after four to six weeks training. The Sight for All Foundation is located within the South Australian Institute of Opthamology at the RAH. More of the Foundation s work can be found on Will Rogers Presentation 3

Meeting 2298, 5 May Speaker: Bill Marles, President Grote Business Precinct Topic: Grote Street Sustainability Centre Review Michael Forward Our beloved and highly respected Bill Marles is a man of ideas, passion and commitment who always seems to have one or more new projects on the go. On Thursday he spoke to us about Grote Precinct s vision for an Environmental Sustainability Centre on the ground floor of the new Central Bus Station, facing onto Grote Street opposite the Central Market. Bill and a number of his associates who are passionate about the environment are preparing a submission to the Adelaide City Council to secure this space as a showcase for environmental projects to show people of all ages what is already being done, and what is possible, in terms of reducing greenhouse gas emissions, recycling waste, saving energy, generating clean energy and generally protecting and restoring the environment. The proposed Centre will have a strong education and promotion focus and already has elicited interest and support at the local, State and Commonwealth levels from key public and political figures and small and large businesses. Bill during his presentation. Tom asking the question. The Environmental Sustainability Centre fits within an overall strategy of making Grote Business Precinct the first carbon neutral urban zone in Australia - which might well make it the first in the southern hemisphere. Bill is a passionate communicator and presenter of ideas who really needs no aids; notwithstanding this, he supplemented and enhanced his talk with a PowerPoint presentation of highly relevant (hand-held) photographs of solarpowered, battery-driven cars and buses running around the streets of Adelaide, polluting nothing, and whole roofs of solar panels that are already saving tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions in the Grote Street Precinct. Bill s talk was followed by lively discussion and further ideas of what might be incorporated in the Centre, demonstrating the active engagement of everyone present. The submission to Council has a way to go and there will be competing tenders. Adelaide West Rotary is right behind you Bill and we wish you every success as you develop the submission, prepare the business case, and secure the necessary financial and community support to go ahead. Attendance and Raffle 4 Apologies: Ashleigh, David, Randolph, Kym, Marie, Yvonne, Richard and our guest was Trixie. The raffle was won by Tom.

Meeting 2230, 19 May Speaker: Bernadette M c Alary MBA, CEO Hands On SA Topic: Hands On SA Introduction to Bernadette Bernadette accepted the challenge of leading Hands On SA 12 years ago. She was charged with revitalising a struggling organisation; Hands On SA had very little community support, tenuous financial viability and no ownership of the buildings it occupied to provide services to people with a disability. Since that time, Hands On SA has been transformed in the same way that the lives of the 160 people supported by the organisation have been transformed. Introduction to Hands On SA Hands On SA was founded in 1963 when a group of concerned parents of patients and health professionals from Glenside Hospital formed an occupational therapy group in the old meeting hall at Glenside Hospital. The enterprise began with one goal: to build better lives and a better future for people with significant disability who were patients of Adelaide s two psychiatric hospitals. The founders recognised that people with acute mental health issues needed training and support to meaningfully engage in the community. That is still the case today, almost 50 years later. What has changed, thankfully, are the opportunities that exist for people experiencing psychiatric disability in our community. But much more remains to be done. What started as occupational therapy grew into a vocational preparation program, where clients of the program received instruction and assistance to participate in a range of activities to build employment skills. The major goal of the Hands On SA program remains unaltered - for participants to increase personal capacity, to gain confidence and self-esteem, to advance their work skills and move from a dependent to an increasingly independent lifestyle. And the results have been remarkable! Today, Hands On SA is a modern Australian Disability Enterprise, providing services to; 160 people with a disability in supported employment secondary school students with and without a disability in their journey from school to work through work experience traineeships for school leavers honours psychology students from Flinders University undertaking vocational placements. Topic for the Day The importance of rehabilitation of people with chronic mental illness and their successful reintegration into the community. There is an increasing prominence of mental health issues and growing awareness in the community - Rotary s initiatives have influenced the destigmatisation of mental illness and increased understanding of the issues millions of Australians face. We have seen firsthand how having meaningful employment and belonging to a social network improves lives. Hands On SA employees are inspired to create a brighter future for themselves by achieving at work. This, in turn, enriches the community for us all. Some examples of the outstanding achievements of Hands On SA employees are: individuals who have spent years living in institutions now living and working in the community (Continued on following page...) 6

(...continued) individuals with very little formal training and limited literacy and numeracy skills completing TAFE courses individuals participating in recreation, sport, art and travel activities in the community employees mentoring other people with a disability at work peer support to develop personal and vocational skills. I do not seek. I find. Pablo Picasso Hands On SA s Logo Hands On SA launched its new logo in March This will be used to market the competitive commercial services provided by the organisation to the business community. The services on offer include: mail campaigns and print finishing services custom assembly and packaging food packaging shrinkwrapping gift baskets and food hampers labelling wine bottles manufacture of wooden items and aids for daily living. An appeaser is one who feeds a crocodile hoping it will not eat him last. Winston Churchill Looking for work At our last meeting Edan arranged for a young lady, Alex Karantonis, who has completed a major proportion of her studies to date and is looking for either community work or work in the business environment. If any of our members have any ideas that could assist Alex please contact John Madigan. 7
