1 ROTARY CLUB OF ADELAIDE WEST INC BULLETIN 26 August 2010, Meeting # September 2010, Meeting #2268 Printed fortnightly Brilliant Broadway concerts Saturday 20 and Sunday 21 November 1 We re delighted to now be full steam ahead with our Brilliant Broadway concerts with the Adelaide Art Orchestra and our three charities Arthritis South Australia; Cora Barclay Centre and Minda. Tickets are now on sale through BASS ( or Promotions are now flowing out by to thousands of supporters: People who attended last year s Glenn Miller concert; the charities mailing lists; Grote Precinct s contacts; the Orchestra themselves... and numerous other sources. But we need your help! We encourage you to now spread the word as quickly as you can to help us achieve a sell-out of 2,000 people this year (across all three concerts). Don t forget that people this year can pre-purchase a Wilson s Carpark across the road from the University of Adelaide s ELDER HALL on North Terrace. Part proceeds from the 10 carpark fee will be donated by Wilsons back to Rotary Adelaide West. Plus this is simply very convenient for our concert attendees. On the night we will have a lottery with some fantastic prizes. Sioux will be running with us a drinks station / bar with a selection of alcoholic beverages, softies, tea and coffee. Our charities will also be heavily involved helping as ushers and working with our own Rotary / Grote team to make the lottery another profitable success (thanks to Master Edan again for his outstanding efforts last year!) You will find a FULL POSTER for the concert at the end of this Bulletin. PLUS you can refer people online to get all information about the concert at See you at Elder Hall in November! 2 Report by Service Chair Sioux Christiansen covering our Major Service Project & our Special Breakfast Major Project The Central Adelaide Homeless Project got underway on Saturday, 14 August when we collected 100 kg of fresh veg, fruit and meat along with much bread and other goodies such as muffins delivered to Centacare assisting their homeless programs. It became very clear, very quickly that this is a two person job and I thank my daughter Yanese for coming along and helping me. Homewares such as blankets, manchester, good quality crockery, cutlery and glassware are also desperately needed. 26 September, Breakfast Meeting Just five minutes from the Tea Tree Gully Hotel, up the North East Road, stands the historic Inglewood Inn where a special Breakfast meeting has been arranged for Adelaide West members, family and friends, to enjoy the 30th Anniversary Bay to Birdwood run. This year s B2B is expected to attract the greatest numbers of vintage and classic vehicles which will be able to be viewed up close whilst enjoying a BBQ brunch. Mine hosts, Peter and Polly Howell, have also donated a dinner for two as a raffle prize. Bring your family and friends along to a very special opportunity to enjoy motoring history and a chance for friends and acquaintances to get to know Rotary. Please RSVP to Sioux as soon as possible. Meeting 2264, 5 August Ray Meandering (Raelene Klinger), from Grote Business Precinct Review Michael Forwood We are extremely fortunate at the Adelaide West Rotary to enjoy such a wonderful array of interesting and committed speakers each week. On Thursday, 5 August we were privileged to hear from Raelene Klinger a passionate advocate for environmental projects including recycling and green environmental art. Raelene owns and manages a small business called Earth Workshops where she puts her heartfelt beliefs into practice and in doing so engages schools, businesses, local government and others in making it all happen. Raelene came equipped with what would doubtless have been an amazing PowerPoint presentation of recent and current projects. But technology let her down. Given her passionately held values, it couldn t have happened to a better person: and, really, it couldn t have mattered less because she has a clear and simple message, a ton of energy and enthusiasm and therefore no need for pictures or notes. But she did have some splendid pictures from the Heart of Adelaide project with many fascinating old photos of the Central Market and its environs in the early days of Adelaide and during the 1965 market redevelopment wonderfully presented on a revolving cube to the tune of Jesu, Joy of Man s Desiring. 2 Earth Workshops is now 10 years old and has completed many wonderful environmental projects in collaboration with individuals, businesses, schools and communities. It has been hard, and is still hard going, but it is fun and it is creative and it inspires people to turn their ideas and dreams into long-lasting reality. Earth Workshops is not driven by profit but by value to society. Activities and projects include exhibitions, mystery retreats, community art and environmental research. Raelene expressed great affection for members of the Grote Street Precinct including Bill Marles, Yvonne Mirandi, Kim and others present. We were all singularly impressed by this glimpse of her life s work in the community. Ray Meandering
3 Meeting 2265, 12 August Speaker Michele Colmer Review Michael Forwood Michelle was warmly introduced by David Griggs the man who launched her on her career as a motivational public speaker some five years ago, or so. Michelle was hit by a car when she was two years old, miraculously survived and has spent the past 28 years building a wonderful, cheerful and highly successful life that she so happily and eloquently shares with others through her public speaking. Michelle has just returned from five weeks in America part holiday and part public speaking. She only gave us a glimpse of what she had done, focussing on her time in San Francisco, Chicago, Cincinnati and Orlando where she attended the National Speakers Convention. Michelle has an engaging style strong audience contact, loosely but deftly structured, decidedly witty (both for her own amusement and for the audience) and with a delicious touch of cheekiness. Oh, and I nearly forgot, a simple and clear message even when she s on her home ground as she was on this occasion. I love to hear her speak. As do the rest of us. She started by thanking first, Alan Smith for his help in identifying Rotary clubs where she might speak during her time away and, secondly, Geoff for supplying banners and flags for exchange and distribution. Then she launched into an account of her stay in San Francisco where she visited Alcatraz, spoke at the Fisherman s Wharf Rotary Club and walked over the Golden Gate Bridge (this is what my notes say but as I write this report my mind boggles at the thought that this is, or was, the longest bridge in the world!). Then she was in Chicago for American Independence Day, a live ball game, a visit to the House of Blues, inside and up the Willis Tower and then some gospel singing Michele Colmer Hallelujah!! Followed by three days of speeches in Cincinnati including an address to 75 to 80 people at the Rotary Club from whence an invitation to visit a summer camp for people with disabilities where she heard a number of very moving stories of personal challenges and achievements. Her own challenges included a very steep staircase where she was staying with a friend (wry smile, and a wholesome laugh) and American food with grinning references to yellow/orange cheese, very sweet bread, marshmallows and rice bubbles in the shape of Mickey Mouse, and lollies and all else full of peanut butter! A real highlight was the National Speakers Convention in Orlando an awesome experience and Disney World in the same city. All the Rotary club visits were marked by an exchange of banners and usually photographs with a local President and others. These were passed around the audience for our enjoyment as she rattled along recounting her many and varied exploits. It was certainly an action packed working holiday. Michelle concluded with her own compelling summary of the purpose and achievements of Rotary around the world. She is a great ambassador for Rotary and for our Adelaide West Rotary Club. And somewhere in at all we sang Happy Birthday and ate her chocolate cake for desert. What a Gal! (continued on next page...) Duties Members: please check this schedule regularly and mark your due turn in your diary. If you are unable to fulfil your rostered duty, please arrange for a replacement Club Member in advance. Welcoming duties: At desk with the cashier to complete name tags/make up cards, etc for guests. 4 (continued...) Attendance and raffle winner There were 18 members at our meeting and all celebrated Michele s birthday. Edan Barnett s father Roger from Victoria was a club visitor. There were two prizes for our raffle. David Griggs was the first winner and Sioux Christiansen the second. Meeting 2266, 19 August Speaker Peter Nolan A review on this most interesting speaker will be in the next Bulletin. Attendance This was a well attended positive meeting with 24 members present. Kevin Hollister from Adelaide East visited. Future Meetings Meeting 2267, 26 August Speaker Catherine Logue Topic: RYLA International Conference in Canada Catherine Logue conducted experiential leadership training in Montreal, Canada in June As a member of the International Facilitation Team, Catherine worked with 120 young leaders from around the globe. During the program, issues including team work, leadership within their culture and community focussed events were explored. The richness of the cultural diversity was just amazing, and everyone was keen to learn from their colleagues, said Catherine Logue. My greatest thrill was the team with whom I worked closely have chosen to implement a literacy project from around the globe, commented Catherine. The team name was Calgary and their focus was built from the team name: C Child A Awareness of L Literacy G Globally A Achieves R Results Y Yeah! One of the Canadians, Tess, has already commenced her literacy project in her own district, using the members from the international team around the globe. Meeting 2268, 2 September Speaker Prameet Kotak from the Grote Business Precinct Topic: An holistic approach to health and wellness Prameet decided to change professions from Law to fitness and started his career in Mumbai, India in early 2002, after which he came to Australia to share his passion and grow the business. After four years of working for a quality gym and servicing the elite in Adelaide, he set up his own systems RAPTfx, and then moved to India to spread quality training and services. (continued on next page...) 4
5 (continued...) He has set up gyms, helped and mentored underprivileged boys and girls, set up personal training businesses, and personal trained the who is who of the Indian film industry and corporate houses! He is featured regularly in the media for his unique and new fitness concepts from time to time. He has featured in magazines such as vogue and men s health to name a few. Prameet stands true to his philosophy and principles of: Service before profit Quality before quantity and now continues to Personal train, Massage and Conduct yoga classes, here now in Adelaide. Prameet Kotak Meeting 2269, 9 September Speaker Nick Koorey Topic: How to save lots of s with an energy audit Congratulations to Michele Colmer for the wonderful article and picture in the Advertiser on Saturday, 21 August. 5 Adelaide West Rotary Club Inc. Website At our Board Meeting on 19 August discussion took place on the lack of current information on club activities listed on our Web. It was decided that Directors up date information which is covered by their portfolios and together with members who wish to participate prepare information on last year s activities and proposals for this year. Particular emphasis on the various areas include past events, upcoming events, club history and in particular overseas activities. Since our meeting several areas have already have been amended however it is most important that this area of club promotion be treated as urgent. Please advise John about the information you are preparing. This is really a club project.
