I believe some of our most interesting speakers have been our own members, especially when a new member shares his or her life s experiences with the other members of our club. So we heard from Martin Fothergill, who is already one of our more industrious and active members. We learnt that what Martin does for enjoyment seems highly dangerous to most of us! For a bit of fun he races cars at high speed and jumps out of aeroplanes (with or without his glasses). He is obviously an adrenalin junkie! Thank you Martin for your informative and entertaining presentation it is a privilege and a pleasure to have you in RCOB. Martin s wife Theresa joined us for our meeting, as well as Kathy Every. As I have said many times, it is always a delight to welcome partners to our meetings. Thank you Greg for being our stand-in Chairman and host for the evening. Also a big thank you must go to Heather who did so much to make the district MUNA event so successful (as well as all the other things she is organising!). It is members like Greg and Heather who help keep the Rotary wheels turning. I attended the district Presidents meeting last Friday night, where I received a good insight into what is happening in district and other clubs. There are some interesting projects that other clubs are involved with, and particularly projects along the lines of Peace through Service, the Rotary International theme for 2012/2013. For example, Doncaster Rotary have a project to help combat family violence, Hampton are building a Peace Pavilion and Dingley Village are assisting an Afghanistan refugee to assimilate into our society. We also got an update on the Rotary International Council on Legislation recently held in Chicago and attended by PDG Jenny Coburn. The weather was a little windy, and both golf courses were challenging. We got together for dinner each night to socialise and support our "Rotary Problem". Congratulations to the winners. From this we gather he thinks he is a male (but is possibly a bit unsure), born in the early 1950s in a County adjacent to London. We do know that he has been married to Theresa (on the left in photo) for 38 years and they have two sons. Martin fills in his week with; Grandson Golf Sailing Volunteer Sandybeach Plumbing Business (doing the accounts for his son s business) Rotary His hobbies include; Golf, where he recently had a hole in one! Starting in the paper industry in 1970 in the sample department as post boy of a paper merchant and ended up running one of the most successful and profitable merchants in Europe. The UK and Irish merchant where he was MD was eventually taken over by an Australian business. Martin moved to Australia in 2005 and headed up the Australian, NZ and Asian business. After retiring in 2010 Martin and Teresa decided to stay on in Australia and recently became Australian citizens. Page 4
