Rotary Making a Difference bendigosouthrotary.org.au President s update Club meeting 2 November 2017 Chairman Lindsay Jackson managed a busy agenda amid lots of club activity this week, with Swap Meet coordinator Ken Briggs busily issuing and recording passes for volunteers before and after the meeting. Our Celtic harp recital sponsors Jeanette and Rob from Avonmore Estate joined us for our End Trachoma 2020 themed meeting, but unfortunately harpist and singer Meryl Wilkinson was unable to attend. It was a pleasure to formally welcome new member Tom Campbell to the club, after he elected to transfer across from the RC Bendigo Next Generation. Tom joins with the classification of Rural Banking, and has accepted Tony s invitation to join the Membership Committee, where I expect he will be able to bring a fresh set of eyes to recruitment across the age spectrum. Rod reminded us of the achievements and sacrifices of our forebears on the Kokoda Track and at Beersheeba in recognition of important anniversaries at this time, and led us in a minute silence in tribute. We had announcements from Ken who reported that we have filled our Swap Meet rosters (thank you members), and provided a briefing for volunteers; Graeme Meager from Lifeline who promoted their trivia fund raiser at RC Eaglehawk meeting rooms on Saturday night 4 Nov; Foundation Chair Merlyn who spruiked the cluster Foundation Dinner, and coin collectors for EREY and Centurion donation purposes, after garnering great club support for the End Polio Now movie night (55 tickets sold to members); Tony on D9800 On to Conference planning, with fourteen attendees from the club (again, great support from our members); Heather on the RC Bendigo Strathdale raffle tickets; and Anne provided an example of the stocked handbags that she is inviting members to donate for the Echuca Centre for Non-Violence. We were very pleased to have PDG Dr Murray Verso as our guest speaker on the subject of the Rotary End Trachoma by 2020 initiative. PDG Murray has joined Rotarians Rob McGuirk and Kerry Kornhauser on the project team leading this initiative, bringing his valuable medical background and experience to the project. Murray reminded us how sandy blight impacts remote central Australian communities of mainly Indigenous people, and how Australia is lagging behind eradication programs in other nations. RI President Ian Riseley has made Trachoma eradication in Australia one of his priorities, with the objective of being able to celebrate success during the centenary of Rotary in Australia in Club Trachoma Project team member Trevor Phillips presented PDG Murray with a $2,000 donation from our Celtic harp event for the End Trachoma 2020 initiative, one of our Key Goals for the year.

2 Our tall poppy this week, taking home the Foundry voucher, was Graham Neivandt, in recognition of his high level of contribution towards the management, operation and refurbishment of D9800 s Camp Getaway over many years. Thanks Graham. November Board meeting update Business addressed at a busy Board meeting this month included: A reminder system for rostered volunteers Planning for supplies support for the Solomon Island remote clinic Child Safe policy implications for the Science and Engineering Challenge Report and planned donation to Ulumbarra Foundation following the Welsh Choir Concert Planning for future concerts The termination of the RAWCS Australian Cambodian Children s Taskforce project A potential project supporting D9790 in providing cultural experiences for La Trobe University students Planning for our schools scholarships program A review of the meeting live streaming initiative Club storage project update BBQ trailer compliance update Adoption of amendments to our Child Safe Policy and Procedures reflecting updated advice from D9800 Don t forget we are off to the movies to support End Polio Now this week in lieu of our club meeting. Make sure you buy Zoe a beer or a chocolate as it is her last Rotary event for a while as she is heading off on nature adventures in South America (Paul is now the Signpost and attendance contact).
