2 Who we are. what we do The Marina Industries Association (MIA) is the peak representative body for marinas, slipways, boatyards, berthing, mooring and other marine storage facilities as well as sailing and cruising boating clubs. MIA is a public company limited by guarantee and has an industry Board of 15 directors and three staff. MIA membership comprises in excess of 85% of the major Australian marinas as well as an increasing number of members from overseas, including NZ, Asia-Pacific and the Middle East. Membership has grown on average 8% per annum for the past three years. MIA s mission is to contribute to the sustainable development of the industry through the promotion of marinas and the provision of education, environmental accreditation and research programs and policies. This is done in conjunction with the Global Marina Institute and the various State Boating Industry Associations. The MIA, as a foundation member of the GMI, delivers education and accreditation programs for its members that are globally recognised in Australasia, Asia, the Pacific and the Middle East. MIA s training programs are extensive and provide a recognised industry career path. Training is aligned to standards set by the Global Marina Institute and courses cover marina operations and management with specific courses for straddle carrier operations and customer service. Senior industry members can achieve and maintain one of four internationally recognised certifications. There is a significant export of Australian Certified Marina Managers (CMMs) who are now working across the globe. Australia also has a healthy export trade in marina goods and services including marina planning, infrastructure and construction. MIA hosts an international marinas conference and exhibition every second year which attracts delegates and exhibitors from around the world. Excellence in marina services and standards are recognised through the bi-annual Club Marina MIA Marina of the Year Awards. The MIA is very aware of the important role marinas play, as the public face of the marine industry, to the wider community. MIA has initiated two environmental programs that keep well ahead of government regulations and demonstrate industry leadership and professionalism to government, boat users and the general public. 2 P a g e

3 The International Clean Marinas Program promotes best environmental operation and management practices as the benchmark for participating marinas. The marinas are independently audited against 124 specific environmental assessment criteria in areas such as mechanical/service activities, fuelling and emergency planning. In 2010 MIA launched a higher level 4 Clean Marina that recognises ISO accreditation. In 2009 MIA launched the Gold Anchor international Rating Scheme for marinas, a customer focused scheme that has some parallels with the accommodation sectors star rating scheme. Independent audit and mystery shop checks are part of the scheme that provides ratings from three to five Gold Anchors. The rating considers over 100 assessment criteria covering the marina and nearby services and facilities. The scheme was extended in 2012 with the introduction of the Gold Anchor International General Scheme a cost effective option which indicates a marina has made a genuine commitment to customer service and provides and entry point for marinas wishing to promote this commitment while reinforcing their customer focus. MIA is actively involved in initiating industry research and will release the comprehensive 2013 Health of the Australian Marina Industry report in April 2014, conducted by Prof. Ed Mahoney and his team at the Recreational Marine Research Centre, Michigan State University, USA. It is vital for the sustainability of the industry, that the economic, social and environmental contributions of this sector can be effectively articulated to government and the wider community. MIA promotes the industry and its members through various print and electronic media. Members achieving higher standards are given additional promotion to reward their effort and boost the professionalism and the credibility of the industry. MIA is positive about the long term future for marinas as key activity hubs for recreational boating, tourism and related leisure activities for local communities. Marinas provide an important interface with the marine environment for both the boating and the non-boating public. MIA marinas are increasingly playing a lead role in marine environmental education. The Association s continuing focus on the professional development and management of marinas aligned with marina user and wider community expectations should see marinas grow and prosper into the future. Glossary of Marina Terms an initiative linked to our partnership in the Global Marina Institute. The Glossary includes a guide to the most commonly used marina and nautical terms as well as Safety Signs and Symbols. Available via MIA website for download and can be customized to each facility. Take the time and costs out of sourcing legal advice and look at our Tenancy Lease, which has been designed for workshops, cafes, chandleries, yacht brokers, etc. 2. External Contractors Agreement - this agreement is intended for use by marina operators with independent contractors working in the marina, workshop and slipway. Corporate Travel Insurance - Whether travelling overseas or within Australia, your business automatically receives insurance covering lost luggage, personal effects, money/credit cards, personal injury and medical expenses. It relates to any authorized business trip taken by Directors and employees of the MIA member and incidental leisure travel that is attached to a business trip. Accompanying spouses and/or partners and dependant children are also covered.
