2 Back Rock District Fall Camporee Sept. 26, 27, 28, 2014 Owl Creek Reservoir Tamaqua, Pa. Owl Creek is a 900 acre property owned by the Borough of Tamaqua and managed by the Owl Creek Reservoir Commission.There are 2 reservoirs, both are stocked and managed as catch and release fisheries by the Pa. Fish and Boat Commission. The camporee is open to all Boy Scout Troops and Venture Crews in Black Rock District. The purpose of this camporee is to have FUN and to promote healthy competition between units. The program will be a mix of Q & A Demonstrations and hands on stations with assistance from: Tamaqua Fire Dept. Pa. Fish & Boat Commission Pa. Game Commission Pa.DCNR Service Project We will be performing a service project for the Owl Creek Reservoir Commission on Saturday morning. Units will be notified of what the project is prior to event so they can bring any tools that may be needed. Competition Troop Cooking Competition: Each troop/crew is encouraged to submit their best chicken dish and their best dessert. Troops will submit 1 dinner plate and 1 dessert plate to be judged. Each units entries will be judged on presentation and taste. Please make sure chicken is properly cooked. Gateway Competition: Each troop/crew is encouraged to construct a gateway. There are no height restrictions on gateways but it must be within the boundaries of their campsite. Gateways will be judged based on design and creativity. 2

3 Troop 4 Way Tug-of-War: Tug of war will be held in the middle of the campsite field. Double elimination. Last troop standing wins. Campsite Inspection: Campsites will be inspected on Saturday morning. Awards will be given for clean campsites. See the attached inspection sheet. General rules: 1: All units MUST pre-register. Campsites will be assigned as registrations are received. The size of your campsite will depend on how many youth and leaders are registered to attend. 2: Two Deep Leadership: all unit must have a minimum of 2 leaders in camp at all times. 3: All units will be responsible for their own meals. No meals will be provided. CAUTION there are skunks, raccoons and bears on the property. Store your food appropriately. 4: All units are responsible for carrying out all of their trash. There are NO dumpsters on site. Leave No Trace. 5: NO GROUND FIRES. Units can use off ground fire pits. 6: Water: There is potable water on site. Bring your own jugs and water bottles. 7: Bathrooms: There are bathrooms on site. There will also be port-a-potties available. All scouts and leaders are expected to help keep them clean. 8: Parking: There is limited parking inside the area. Vehicles will be allowed in to unload gear. Vehicles must then be immediately moved to the parking lot. Vehicles not carrying gear will not be allowed onto the property. 9: Scoutmasters must have Activity Consent Forms and Current Medical Forms on hand for all attending Scouts. For a pdf copy of Activity Consent Form go to Search scout safety>forms. 10: First Aid: Our Hawk Mountain Scout Reservation Medic, Cole Mitchell, will cover our first aid needs with assistance from Tamaqua Fire Dept. 11: Buddy System: All scouts must follow this policy at all times. 12: Wildlife: Please avoid all wildlife. If you see any wildlife, observe it, take a picture and walk the other way. Note: A bear with 2 cubs has been seen on the property in recent months. 13: Tree Stands: This property hosts hunters during deer season. There are several tree stands on property. Scouts must stay away from and out of any tree stands. A Scout is courteous. 14: Proper camping footwear must be worn at all times. 15: Scouts must abide by The Outdoor Code and The Principles of Leave No Trace. 3

In addition to the fine program we have planned, Scouts are free to explore the area. Go fishing or hiking. There are 2 marked trails. One is the Tenderfoot Trail which runs along the back side of the lower reservoir. The other trail, the Eagles Nest Trail, goes to a campsite on top of the mountain. There is an unmarked trail on the north side of the upper reservoir. Campfire Program All units are encouraged to perform a song or skit during the campfire program. All songs and skits must in compliance with BSA standards. All songs/skits must be approved by staff. See attached form. 4

6 Wilderness Survival There are 2 remote campsites that will be used for this program. Age and rank will determine who goes where. There is limited space for this program. Scouts must pre-register to participate. Slots will be filled on a first come,first serve basis. Participants will assemble at staff area at 4pm on Saturday. All gear will be inspected before departure. Scouts will need to bring: Sleeping bag Shelter 2 meals dinner and breakfast Water Personal gear Once you have registered and made payment, please submit an to Tom Piaskowski, tpiaskowski@infinera.com and Rudy Benkert, trekneb2@gmail.com to register for the Wilderness Survival Outpost. The following information is needed in the Scouts name, age, rank, unit #, unit leader, male or female. Please also inform Tom & Rudy if you are interested in serving as a volunteer leader for the outpost. 6

11 Directions From south: rt 309 north 2.3 miles after intersection with 443 west [clamtown rd.] turn right onto Owl Creek Rd 1.8 miles turn right into Owl Creek Reservoir From 209 west or 209 east or 309 south: go to center of Tamaqua take 309 south after Hess Station go 0.5 miles turn left onto Owl Creek Rd. 1.8 miles turn right into Owl Creek Reservoir Travel to the end of road, park in the parking lot, walk to registration tent. We will instruct you were to go from there. 11
