2 WELCOME MESSAGE COBA 2018 Michael Lawrence CEO, COBA Welcome to COBA 2018, the Customer Owned Banking Convention, the industry s premier annual convention. COBA 2018 will be held in Melbourne from October We look forward to welcoming you to the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre in the heart of this cosmopolitan and vibrant city. As the industry meets this year, The Challenge of Change is the theme for this year s Convention. You will hear from speakers and see exhibitors whose experience in meeting such challenges can help the customer owned banking sector take advantage of this moment. Our industry is changing like never before. The Royal Commission, a range of new regulatory proposals, and the fast pace of technological change is all contributing to an uncertain and complex world. This is The Challenge of Change. But change can also bring opportunity. Customer owned banking continues to grow and is a competitive alternative for millions of Australians. Our sector s assets continue to grow, driven by strong housing loan and deposit growth, which is outpacing the rest of the market. There is no question banking competition is in the spotlight and our sector s model and focus on customers position us well to take advantage of these tailwinds. Coming together in Melbourne we will learn from each other and a diverse range of speakers who will make us think, challenge and inspire us to return to our businesses and find a way through The Challenge of Change. We anticipate high interest this year and encourage COBA members, industry stakeholders and suppliers to join us for this signature industry event. In addition to the formal business program we have several social events organised which will allow us to meet in a relaxed atmosphere. We look forward to seeing you in Melbourne for COBA 2018!

4 KEYNOTE SESSIONS State of the sector: reflections on banking today Graeme Samuel AC, Professorial Fellow, Monash University Business School and former Chairman of the ACCC Doing the right thing vs compliance getting the culture right Clara Durodié, Executive Chair & Founder, Cognitive Finance Group Chris Whitehead, Chief Executive Officer, FINSIA Judith Downes, Chair, Bank Australia Challenge, Adversity & Change The Hon Julia Gillard AC Turia s Story Turia Pitt, Mindset Coach and Boss Lady at Turia Pitt International Graeme Samuel will deliver the opening keynote on the state of the banking market in Australia. Graeme will draw on his experience as a member of the APRA panel that conducted the recent Prudential Inquiry into the Commonwealth Bank of Australia as well as his former role of Chairman of the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission. There is a lot of talk about culture in banking and financial services. But who is responsible for culture? What is the role of boards versus management? Is it a question of conduct or competence? Can you regulate culture? A panel of eminent business leaders will discuss these very questions and whether customer owned banking institutions have an in-built advantage over their listed competitors in complying with consumer protection regulation because customers are our number-one stakeholder. The theme for COBA 2018 is the Challenge of Change, and there are few Australians are as qualified to talk on this subject as former Prime Minister Julia Gillard. Ms Gillard delivered significant reforms in her time as Prime Minister, such as the National Disability Insurance Scheme, while leading a minority government in a period of leadership instability. With change the only constant for the customer owned banking sector for the banking sector, Ms Gillard s insights on leadership through change will help us navigate through unchartered waters. In 2011, age 24, Turia Pitt was caught in a freak firestorm while competing in a 100km ultramarathon in Western Australia resulting in burns to 64 per cent of her body. Turia has gone on to thrive in the ultimate story of triumph over adversity. Turia will share her inspiring story and motto never give up in an engaging presentation to conclude our formal program.

The modern world is more connected than ever before. While that presents consumers and business with rewards, there are considerable risks in the digital age. Join us to learn from industry experts about the latest trends and threats and what to do about them. Hear from industry and law enforcement experts at the cutting edge dealing with cyber threats, which can change rapidly. Clara Durodié, international Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology strategist will demystify AI in plain English and explore use cases of AI in retail banking from around the globe. The point of difference for the customer owned banking sector is that 100% of profits benefit customers. But what does this actually mean? We hear from several institutions about how they show this value to their customers and how they are promoting this in the current financial services sector climate. Global and local regulation is continuing at a rapid pace impacting customer owned banking institutions immensely.
