1 F s Word Lions Clubs International 02 December 2012 District 202F D G Des Deliberations WELCOME FELLOW LIONS, LEOS AND PARTNERS I can confirm that the 4 boxes of books we dispatched from Queenstown have now arrived in Cambodia at Loreen's sister's school. She is so appreciative of what our district has done for the children in her school and sincerely thanks our Lions for their help. It's like Christmas for the school teachers there as they make their way through possibly 1000 books and journals. So, well done those clubs who have supplied books. Council meeting in Wellington involves mostly wading through endless reports and Executive Management recommendations for us to consider and ratify. We are urged to encourage our districts to support Christchurch Lions organising next year's Multiple District Convention in Wigram. Anyone interested in attending this MD Convention held from the 12th - 14th April 2013 can find the registration form in the Lion Magazine. Loreen and I attended the Ranfurly Pakeke Club and they had their partners attending too, so a good turn out there. President George is managing pretty well and I presented him with our International President's pin for their club gaining 4 new members over the past year. Also new Lion members Ray Andrews and Bruce French received my D G Encouragement pins, so two good men here for us to watch out for in future. This club has been selling their potatoes and also garden manure and several other projects. A busy club in the Maniototo and we thoroughly enjoyed meeting them. Wanaka Upper Clutha and Wanaka and Districts combined for our next visit. Two very busy clubs and I presented Upper Clutha President Bronwyn Bain with our International President's pin for her club gaining 10 new members over the past year, what a great effort. Wanaka club President Neil, along with President Bronwyn ran a good meeting, starting with an address by Russell McGeorge who is chairman of the Operation Committee for the Dunstan Hospital Scanner Appeal. Lions clubs in the Alexandra, Cromwell and Wanaka Districts are combining with Rotary for monster auctions in the three areas on 16th February Later I gave my address and presented Lion Bob Fallows and Lion Michelle O'Brien with my DG Encouragement pins, another 2 great Lions to watch in future. Both these clubs have been presented with International awards for the Top 100 Tree planting, a great effort rewarded with very attractive trophies. Two very busy clubs we have here in Wanaka. I also presented several long service chevrons to their members. A very nice time we had in Wanaka then Loreen and I were hosted for the night with President Neil and his wife Rena in their lovely home along the lake. The next club visit was with Invercargill East and Riverton Lion Ralph Strang was my driver. President Peter welcomed us at the Workingmen s Club and because this club has gained 4 new members over the past year, I presented President Peter with the International President's pin. Then newest member Lion Fergus Hosie received my DG Encouragement pin. I presented Lion Justin Hamlin with his 'Three New Member' badge for having introduced 3 new members, well done
2 Justin. This club made their annual 'Malcolm Officer Bursary' presentation to Mr Craig Martin who is studying the skills of sheet-metal work. This club is very busy with gate keeping at Riverside and Teretonga, meals on wheels, firewood and manure deliveries. I also presented two service chevrons. An enjoyable night with Invercargill East. On the next visit Loreen and I went with Riverton Lion Euan Templeton over to Clinton to join this larger club and their partners for their Christmas social meeting. Because we had a lot to get through, President David Beattie kept things rolling well and his skills with the gavel and bell soon had his attention. After another very nice meal I did my presentation and presented newer Lion Copland Mackie with my DG Encouragement pin. Also inducted Max Geddes into the club and gave him my encouragement pin. Another two good men for us to watch in future. Clinton certainly has some big projects, 29,000 lambs tailed and recently held their brassica competition which raised $60,000 for the Rescue Helicopter. I presented several long service chevrons including a charter 45 year one to Lion David Mackie, congratulations to him and all the other recipients. A great night for us in Clinton. Until next time, take care of yourselves and one another. Christmas is fast approaching and much is to be done and remember our great ideas WILL work, if we do. D G Des Messages from the District Governor to be acted upon 1) Keep DG informed of the passing of any Lion member so we can acknowledge the family. 2) Club secretaries please, if your club has had a member die since last December, put together a eulogy of this passed Lion and send it to District Secretary Glenys at glenys@ .com along with a photo so that this can be used for our Remembrance service on the Sunday of convention. 3) Our District Convention on 22nd to 24th March 2013 registration forms will now be out with all our clubs. Club Presidents please get a team together, book your accommodation, sort out a club sketch and support your annual convention. We will be accepting the first 3 club sketches submitted. The PDG John Wilson trophy will go to the best club sketch. 4) OFFSPRING OF LIONS: Has your club organised a committee to check out names of Lions offspring? This needs to be done properly and the invitations then sent out after your club has a night and a venue arranged. Check last month's F's Word for a copy of the invitation or contact DG Des. 5) Clubs that received trophies (plaques) at the Owaka convention need to hand them back to their Zone Chairman or our Bulletin Editor Diane Stewart, 428 North Road, Waikiwi, Invercargill. We need them all handed in by the end of January District Governor Des Visitations for December Tues 04 th Wyndham Tues 11 th Garston Wens 12 th Clutha Valley Thurs 13th Alexandra A Very Warm Welcome to the following New Lions Sue Woodward Shirley Wright John Mattisson Sandy Mattisson Michael Lobb Jan-Hein van Westrenen Laurentz Edwards Cromwell Lake Dunstan Gore River Valley Lumsden Lumsden Riversdale Riversdale Stewart Island

HIGHLIGHT on Projects Gore Hokonui Lions Elsie Street Kindergarten Lion Dorothy McDuff Gore Hokonui for an hour. They are hoping to extend it further next year to the other Kindergartens and maybe some of the schools. Members of the Hokonui Lions Club attend Elsie Street Kindergarten in Gore and take part in the Lions Reading Programme. One or two Members go each day to the Kindergarten and read to the children Lion Margaret Hughes Gore Hokonui Neither a wise man nor a brave man lies down on the tracks of history to wait for the train of the future to run over him. --Dwight D Eisenhower Invercargill South Lions Kew Bush During the winter I took some seeds and cuttings along to the Waverly Cubs meeting night and we potted up the cuttings into Lion Allan with Waverley Cubs at Kew sand and Bush planted the seed in potting mix. About a month ago I took the cuttings that had taken root in the sand and the Cubs all potted up about two of the cuttings each. The seeds that had sprouted we potted up into small seedling containers to show them how they are started off. Also on that night I took along a Possum Trap and a Stoat Trap and a Rat bait station to show them how we are doing pest control in the bush. On their meeting night of 14 November we had a planting night down at Kew Bush in an area that we had some open spaces. The trees we planted I had propagated last year at home. We planted about 30 trees, and then showed them how the Possum Trap, Stoat Trap and Bait Stations were set up in the bush. After that we all walked around the track and they picked up any rubbish they could find. Although it was a bit damp the Cubs all enjoyed the evening and were well supported by their parents. There were lots of questions asked and they would have had a bit of knowledge for their Conservation Badge that they get at the end of it, and I enjoyed doing it with the Cubs Lion Allan McPherson Invercargill South

5 100% Country Convention March nd -24 th March 2013 Registration forms and accommodation available for the 100% Country Convention are now out. NOW is a good time for you to decide that you will be attending and register. Heads Up for Kids Greetings Hope that everyone is enjoying the beginning of summer. As 2012 rolls to an end we are currently planning for Heads Up for Kids in 2013 and have set a date for a national awareness week. The concept is to raise more funds, and boost the profiles of the project, Lions Clubs and Heads Up for Kids sponsors with the outcome of supporting loads of Kiwi kids. So please mark your diaries for April 12th - 19th, the official Heads Up for Kids Awareness Week. There is still plenty of money out there to be collected and we hope that with support from Lions nationwide, and the right advertising and marketing we will make a big dent in that 80 million dollars still waiting to be collected. Currently, we are planning for TV and radio advertising, posters on public transport and spaces, lots of newspaper articles and news channels, social media and of course communication and activities among the communities throughout the country. The Heads Up for Kids District Coordinators have, or will be very soon sending out more information and calling for members from each club to be involved. As planning continues there will be a list of fundraising and awareness activities available soon, and we also invite clubs to get creative with collection ideas. Please me, olivia@morrimac.com or call (04) with any questions, feedback or suggestions. Santa Parade in Invercargill Under the leadership of our Zone Seven Chairman Graeme Wilson a group decorated a car which lead a band of Zone Seven Lions on the Parade on Saturday 24th November. A very large crowd of people gathered in Gala, Dee, Tay and Kelvin Streets to wave and cheer the big number of incredible floats as they slowly made their way down the streets. It was great to see the reception of the crowd especially when they saw a very real looking lion in the parade. This is the first time Lions from Zone 7 have entered the parade as often it clashed with Cabinet meetings. Those present thought they had done well especially after hearing the crowds cheering Lions.
