1 February s 2019 Newsletter Welcome to February. Wow! What a Hot January we have had with so many days over 40 degrees.it was great to be able to sit in the air conditioning and watch the Tennis.Well January has flown by and things are getting back to normal. Our monthly program sees the return of our wonderful Volunteers, visiting community groups and regular entertainers, so you can look forward to a great month of activities. Australia Day Celebrations Friday 25 th our Australia Day celebrations, due to the extreme weather, and the temperature reaching a sizzling 45 C plus it was a total fire ban, we decided the flag raising ceremony would be conducted inside the Hostel dining room at 11am which then was followed by Residents enjoying a delicious Aussie lunch provided by the kitchen. Each area decorated in the Aussie way with kangaroo vases full of Australian flowers, gum nuts and foliage made by residents and activity staff for the occasion on the tables. Peter Robbers entertained us with a selection of well-known Aussie songs over lunch time and then those interested moved to the rec room for the Aussie Movie Ladies in black, Thank you to care staff, Kitchen staff and pink girls I think we can all agree the day was a huge success. Cooinda s Australia Day Award winners were; There were many nominations in all categories, showing the high standard of achievement. 2 The Australia Day Raffle Congratulations to Mrs Sheila Burnell on being our winner of a beautiful hamper with lots of goodies Benalla Australia Day Awards Once again witnessed many wonderful local people receive recognition for all the wonderful things they have done for our community over the years. One of the 2019 award winners was our very own CEO Marg Aldous. Marg has been acknowledged and congratulated for all the positive things she has accomplished and given to our Benalla Community over the years by being named Benalla Achiever of the year 2019 We would like to help celebrate Marg s award with her at an afternoon tea party on Monday 4 th February in the Rec room, straight after the resident meeting at 2pm. Friendship Day Friendship Day is a special day when people celebrate showing their appreciation for the people they love and care for as well as treasured friends. Here at Cooinda we will be hosting a special afternoon tea and Happy Hour on Friday 15 th at 2pm in AG, entertained by Ray Murtagh We will be holding a raffle on the day, make sure you get yourself a ticket as it will be drawn during the afternoon; you never know, you just might win something special. We can all get into the spirit of the day by wearing something PINK or RED.
3 Cooinda s Cake Stall Resumes Our first cake stall will be Friday 22nd under the shade sail outside the rec room Please come along and pick up a few homemade goodies. Cooinda Restaurant Each month four residents are invited to participate a special Cooinda Restaurant whereby they can invite two guests each to join them for lunch. This gives our residents and guests a chance to experience a meal together in a Restaurant style atmosphere like in the past. If you are interested, please speak the Health and Wellbeing team who will add your name to the list so that everyone gets an opportunity. Our next Restaurant will be on the 27 th Feburary C.E.M s group Residents from Cooinda, Estia and Morrie Evans, meet once a month to enjoy an activity together. Watch out in next newsletter for dates starting in March.. Catholic Mass Will be held on the Wednesday 20 th in the Rec Room introducing the new parish priest Fr Vijay Bandanadam, who likes to be called( Fr VJ) followed by morning tea. COBS (Cooinda Old Boys) monthly bus outing with Ken. Men from the independent Units are most welcome to attend this outing. It is on the last Thursday of each Month, leaving Cooinda at 2pm from the front office. Please see Activity Staff if you wish to attend due to limited seating FOUND If anyone has lost a small brooch, please see front office

5 Wool Winders need your help As a new year begins, our resident wool-winding group are looking for hand knitted, woolen items to un-pull allowing the group to continue. If you have any old or unwanted items, please drop them off to the activity staff or the front office. Kiosk The kiosk is open on weekdays Monday to Friday and is staffed by our volunteers between 9.30am and 11.30am. It is not open on weekends so please get all your supplies before the weekend. 6 Thank You We would like to say a very big thank you to Pauline and the kitchen staff for all their help making jams and relish as well as all the residents who helped to cut up the ingredients as well as bottle Relish, Jams etc. What a great job you did. The sale of these items goes to the Achievers Club which raises funds to purchase items for the facility, such as wheelchairs, lifting devices and other necessary equipment. Thank you too to the people purchasing the finished products. Jams and Relish for Sale at front office That is all for this month, we hope you enjoy your activities for the month.
