1 LIONS DISTRICT 202F Welcome to for this week Issue 301, 2 nd October, 2011 THIS WEEK IN THE SOUTH Lynette s Lingo Hi Everyone It s hard to believe that we are already one quarter of the way through the 2011/2012 Lions year. Time seems to be flying by. From the Club visits that I have completed to date, I have confirmed that the Lions of 202F are a dedicated bunch of hard workers who go out of their way to do their best for their communities, while having fun. I ve also discovered that most of the Clubs are full of surprises! The beginning of October also sees the start of fishing season, and the end of the Rugby World Cup pool games, and some of the minnows going home, or perhaps heading out to the rivers. To those of you that are fishermen/women, best of luck out there. Dad has a sign in his vehicle that reads Work is for people who don t like fishing, so do enjoy yourselves! This week I thought I would concentrate on Convention, it s just on five months away and you ll be wondering what is going on. On behalf of the Convention Committee, I can advise that we had our regular monthly meeting on Monday night at the pub (where else would it be!) and we are in the final stages of finalising the prices for each of the functions and the layout of the registration form. We plan to have the registration form out with the Labour Weekend edition of F s Word, and mailed out to each Club shortly afterwards. The theme for Convention is Catlins Heritage. The format for Convention will be: Friday Night social event, time to gather together, have a couple of drinks, share stories, and a supper will be served. Saturday Business Session this will commence no earlier than 8 am. While we hope for an 8.20 am call to order, this will depend on the number of Candidates for Second Vice District Governor and Lloyd Morgan Lions Clubs Charitable Trust Trustee (this won t be known until 1 January 2012 when nominations close). The Business Session will commence with the flag ceremony and conclude with a Q & A session. The keynote speaker on Saturday (subject to ratification of the verbal approval received from International President Tam) will be 2006/07 Lions Clubs International President Jimmy Ross and Velda Partners Programme there are a couple of options for partners, either a bus trip down around the Catlins Coast taking in the scenery, or card making. Saturday Night dine and dance. Theme for the night will be Pioneering Ball Sunday Breakfast kindly being catered for by the Toi Tois Lions Club. Remembrance and Rededication Service a chance to remember those Lions we have lost since 1 January Would any Clubs who have lost members please forward to me a F s Word Issue 301, 2 October 2011 Page 1 of 7

2 photograph and eulogy/obituary for their member/s. Also a chance to rededicate yourself to Lions. Sunday Lunch kindly being catered for by the Clinton Lions Club Tree Planting those Clubs that have lost a member are invited to plant a tree at a designated site in Owaka in remembrance of this member, and in keeping with International President Tam s Tree Planting Campaign. This will be a symbolic occasion, with the site being fully prepared and the holes dug. Native trees will be used, and there will be a charge to Clubs for the trees. This is in addition to the plant that a representative of the family/club will receive during the Remembrance Service. Further details will be coming out later. Accommodation the list of accommodation is attached to this edition of F s Word, and those of you intending to travel are encouraged to book as early as possible. The accommodation is held by Lions until Christmas, and will then be released by the venues for anyone to book. Don t leave it to the last minute and miss out! Registrations these will close on Sunday 19 February 2012, just under two weeks prior to Convention. Convention Pins in order to keep costs down, these will be sold separately rather than included in the registration satchels, you will need to mark your registration form if you would like one. Points to note EFTPOS will be available at the venue to pay for drinks only, no money can be withdrawn. Summary a great time is being planned by the boys from Owaka, don t miss out! An update on tree planting for this week, the figure for F is at lunchtime on Friday as I have been unable to get on since then: Trees planted in 202F 1,825 Planted by 5 Clubs Trees planted internationally 2,140,345 1,140,345 past target of 1,000,000 The quote this week is from the parting thought at the September meeting of the Mataura Lions Club: Life is up to you. Life provides the canvas, you do the painting. This week it gives me pleasure to introduce our Zone 3 Chairman Steve Sanders whose profile is within this week s edition of F s Word. Wishing all the best for the first week of October, a busy birthday month in our family! Go the ALL BLACKS! Lynette District Governor 202F I BELIEVE NEW ZEALAND WILL WIN THE RUGBY WORLD CUP! Heads Up for kids is hoping to reach another tonne of coins shortly for Coin Co International, if your club or Resene store has old money and foreign currency to be couriered can you please send it on. Retail stores and banks are calling the 0800 number asking for the collection tins to be emptied. If you or your club have distributed collection cans, please check on them. Collection feedback: My church community each Sunday is supporting our collection of old money and eyeglasses. I have collected over a whole tin of money. Even the former Governor General (Sir Anand Satyanand) gave me money he had from overseas trips! Stephanie Kitching, Wellington Host Lions Yesterday we received fantastic feedback from Spirit of Adventure on Michael Lydia Winiana's recent voyage, which really demonstrates the opportunities Heads Up for Kids can provide. Good morning. Just wanted to pass on that I have just had some fabulous feedback on her. [Michael-Lydia] The 1 st mate said she was one of the best trainees he had worked with and she was elected 1 st mate for the day and was also awarded the award for the person that contributed most to the voyage. Lloyd Morgan Lions Clubs Charitable Trust From the Trust Chairman Jillian and I had the pleasure of attending a 202J Trust Luncheon last Sunday. With an attendance of over 90 Lions and partners there was lots of laughter and chatter over a glass of wine which was followed by a very tasty meal supplied by the Timaru Suburban Lions Club. Libby Rees - a Lions daughter - entertained us with her beautiful singing. Thanks Trustee Jim for organising such a happy occasion. The Trust held its August meeting and Annual Meeting in Wellington recently. We welcomed two new Trustees - Peter Burch and Jean Thompson Church - and also Council Chairman Jo Cameron. I know you will all enjoy working for the Trust. I hope the District Trustees have sent all Clubs the Club Recognition renewal forms, and also reminded them of all the other recognitions available. So until the next LMLCCT newsletter - keep up the good work, as together we can make a difference. Trust Chairman Roger Lake Editor s comments With the General and Annual General Meeting past I have had time to reflect on the Trusts activities. The Trust s responsibility is to manage the contributions given to the Trust by Clubs and individual Lions in the best possible way to provide a steady income flow to assist clubs through grants, do more in their communities. Now that the Trust has a Capital Fund in excess of $4 million it can focus more on F s Word Issue 301, 2 October 2011 Page 6 of 7

7 dispersing funds back to Clubs. However at present, interest rates are low (the principal source of income) and the share-market is doing poorly. Economists will not predict when the world economy will become stable or when interest rates will rise. So for the next few years income from the Capital fund will stabilise or possibly decline. Thus for the Trust to continue to assist clubs in this economic environment it s imperative that Clubs continue to renew Trust membership and recognise individual Lions for their contribution to club and community with Trust Recognitions. To highlight this for the 2010/2011 Lions year: LMLCCT gains and losses for 2010/2011 Capital Fund Income Fund Distribution Net gain $289,466 $260, ,995 Club membership & individual Interest and dividends from Capital Fund recognitions* * includes the Helge Kristiason bequeath of $114,669 Normally $160,000 - $180,000 Grants to Clubs and administering the Trust With inflation and increasing costs it is important we continue to promote the Trust to ensure the Capital Fund continues to grow. With inflation at around 4% the Capital Fund has to increase by at least $ /year to maintain its real value. Big thanks to District Trustees in ensuring clubs continue their contributions and to the Finance Committee comprising; Keith Kenderdine, Ian Watt and Roger Robinson in maintaining a return well above the inflation figure. Grants & Loans Lions Club of Glenmark 202E. $1,000 to assist the club purchase a Heartstart First Aid defibrillator for the Scargill Fire Brigade. Lions Club of Palmerston North Manawatu 202D. $15,000 to assist with the completion of the renovations and additions to Ozanam House in Palmerston North To assist Lions Clubs fulfil humanitarian needs The Lions Club Spirit of Napier 202 M. $2,265 to assist the club establish a Young Achievers Award Scheme for the Napier area. Lions Club of Waihi 202 L. $2,000 to assist the club purchase of a large TV for a residential care home in Waihi. Lions Club of Green Island 202 J. $4,369 to assist with the purchase of two defibrillators to be located at the Dunedin International airport. Total Grants for 2010/2011: $36,492 F s Word Issue 301, 2 October 2011 Page 7 of 7
