1 1 202F District Newsletter Hello Fellow Lions Congratulations to all those Lions and members of the public who took part in some way in the Walk for Kids on Saturday to raise money for the Lions Clubs NZ Child Mobility Foundation. Lions members from the Invercargill clubs were out walking, along with Gore and Wanaka clubs and Winton is holding their walk mid-week. Other clubs may have been busy walking in their areas. I hope a successful amount for the Foundation was raised. What great weather we had in the south on Saturday for the walk as some walks in the North Island were cancelled because of terrible weather. As I was out walking Hamilton Park in Gore with fellow Lions and members of the public, someone remarked that the walk not only benefitted Child Mobility but also our own health. This is Lions Awareness Week so a great week to promote your club in the community to increase Public awareness. I spoke to a group in Balclutha last week about the 100 th International Lions Convention in Chicago. At the end of my presentation, I was asked by a lady, What is it exactly that Lions do? Because I am thoroughly immersed in Lions, I forget that people do not have the same understanding or knowledge about what we do in our communities. It is important that we are promoting our club activities at every opportunity. Membership numbers for September were up, so well done! We ended the month with 1403 members, up 4 members on August numbers. Keep up the excellent work. Have you invited someone to join your club? Now is the time to do it. DG Liz

5 5 Prepared Roy Peterson The following is an account of what happened to a HU4K delivery to the counting room at Resene Paints headquarters at Naenae, Lower Hutt. Buckets/tins/boxes are delivered free to the Inward Goods depot at Resene Paints by Fastway Couriers. They are then delivered to the carpentry shop where our Counting Room is located. The room is located on the first floor and is a secure facility. John Adam and I normally spend Thursdays at the counting room, depending on the volume of work to be done. We will each take a box; weigh it and then sort and/or count the contents according to what it is: Old decimal: 5c, 10c, 20c, 50c and banknotes. Coins bagged into $ per denomination and sold at face value to Reserve Bank. Bank notes when we have 100 per denomination. Pre-decimal: Sorted into Pre-1947 and Post These are sold to coin dealers for their silver content and/or collectible value Copper: New Zealand 1 and 2 cent pieces, and pennies and half-pennies. Sold to scrap metal merchants for the copper value. Foreign: Coins are bagged into 8kg bags and sold to an Australian company Banknotes: Some are sent to the same Australian company, and others to collectors here in New Zealand Current: Banked into the project bank account in $ lots. We do keep a lookout for the 1935 threepence, and have to date found two of them. These have been sold on Trade-Me for around $ each. At other times we get requests for certain coin types e.g a chap in the South Island purchased $ worth of old 10 cent coins to use in some old One-Arm Bandit machines that he had bought. I have attached a photo of part of the counting room which shows bags of coins stacked for sale: From left to right: $100 bags of old decimal coins by denomination ready to go to Reserve Bank 8kg bags of copper coins ready for scrap metal dealer 8kg bags of foreign coins. There is approx. 1 tonne in the picture. Many thanks Roy for this report.

11 CROMWELL LAKE DUNSTAN **** 35 years old **** Happy birthday to us, happy birthday to us!! Yes, we've been serving our community for thirty five years now. My thanks to all who have contributed time, thoughts and ideas into how we could celebrate this occasion. Thank you to Andy Andrews for inducting Glenys and his daughter Diana into our club at our last Tea Meeting. There are now three generations of Andrews in Lions. I wonder if this has occurred in other families. It's certainly something special and deserves to be celebrated. Father s Day raffle Helen H thanked everyone who helped. All tickets were sold and the winner was Gordon Lucas from Tarras. A total profit of $ was made. Something of Interest this evening Ngaire brought along some of her bear collection, which was very interesting. 11 Some of the Birthday muffins. Past members of Cromwell Lake Dunstan CROMWELL For several decades the Cromwell Lions club have taken Cromwell senior citizens to the blossom festival. Seating provided by the Alexandra Masonic lodge on Tarbert Street gave the nineteen people who came this year, a comfortable and close view of the parade. Breaking the journey back to Cromwell, a magnificent afternoon tea was provided for by the Lions club at the Post Office cafe in Clyde. The Lions club would like to thank GoBus for helping with the transport and the Cromwell Bulletin / Cromwell News for donating advertising space. Te Anau Kepler The mystery trip will be history by the time you read this but we have 13 members attending and Peter Flynn to drive and keep us under control. November board meeting will be at Jo Wilsons in Manapouri and we will visit the baby alpacas next door too. Talks have taken place for the cleaning of BBQ and he is going to bring it up with Community Council, that a council employee maybe able to take on the cleaning, so we will wait and see.
