1 M Issue 4 DISTRICT GOVERNOR S NEWSLETTER DG Lion Simon Moss: dg@lions105m.org.uk Newsletter Editor: Lion Pauline Hoogerwerf: hoogerwerf@btopenworld.com Come along to YOUR Autumn Forum Autumn Forum is taking place this month on 20 th at The St John s Hotel, Solihull starting at 9:30am. This is your forum and provides an excellent opportunity to meet the District team, to find out more about how they can help you and to let them know what else you would like them to do for you. This year there will be four workshops: 1. Achieving our potential 2. Working together 3. A member is for life not just for Christmas 4. Getting the most out of Social Media In addition there will be a presentation from Christine s charity for the year, Me & Dee, and information about District Convention An excellent hot buffet lunch will be provided at a cost of per head. If you haven t already booked your place please contact District Events Officer, Lion John Barnes as soon as possible. Lions is so much more than your Club, so come along and meet like-minded people from around the District, exchange ideas and make new friends. MD CONVENTION 2014 It will be here sooner than you think On the weekend of the 9th to 11th May, 2014, District 105 BN will be hosting the Multiple District Convention, at the Palace Hotel in Manchester. The Convention Host Team are cooking up something special, so get ready for a fantastic weekend of fun and fellowship The Convention venue is easily reachable by road or rail, with one of Manchester s Train stations literally on the doorstep, and the other stations just a short taxi ride away. Visit the MD Website and select CONVENTION for social and Hotel bookings. You can also contact the hotel directly to book your accommodation, remembering to say that you are attending the Lions Convention. Book now to avoid disappointment later. The Team will be producing regular Convention Newsletters which will be accessible via the Communications Digest and the District Newsletter. The first and second Convention Newsletters can be also be accessed via the MD Website The Convention Pin has been tastefully designed on a popular Manchester theme. See below
2 A VERY BRITISH EVENING WITH THE SOLIHULL SEVEN On Sunday 8 th September I had the great pleasure to attend the Solihull Arts Theatre for a Last Night of the Proms organised by the seven Lions Clubs in the Solihull Borough. PROMS CONTINUED The event was put together with a committee comprising members from Balsall Common, Castle Bromwich, Exhibition, Knowle and Dorridge, Marston Green, Shirley and Solihull Lions Clubs, with a not inconsiderable amount of leadership from PDG Doug Cross who also acted as MC for the night. A full house, some 330 people, was thoroughly entertained by The Flowers Band, a brass band from Gloucester, who put on a staggering display of musicianship. Demand for tickets had outstripped the venue s capacity and those who were able to get in left saying how much they had enjoyed it and that they hoped it would be done again next year. This was the sort of event that demonstrates what Lions can do if they work together. The night was also my first meeting with the Mayor of Solihull, Councillor Joe Tildesley, and his wife Mrs Joan Tildesley. They really are a nice couple and I look forward to meeting them again at Balsall Common s charter and District Convention.
3 DG TEAM TRAVELS The following is a list of Club visits, Charter Anniversaries and other events that members of the District Governor team will be undertaking in the next couple of months. 4 ON YOUR MARKS GET SET GOING In support of Christine s charity of the year, Me & Dee, I am challenging the district to find me at least one 10K to 10 mile race in each Zone to run during the year. I have now completed the first of these races - the Shirley Lions Fun Run - in a time of 53 minutes for the just over 10K route. Apart from a biting wind, conditions were good for the runners, if not for the spectators, but with heavy rain forecast some casual runners decided not to come. Before starting the race itself On arrival I registered with Lion Ken Barker Had my picture taken with Shirley Lion Finishing laps 1 and 2 Met Harry s mum, Georgie, representing the charity for the day - Help Harry Help Others. Finishing lap 3 note the person finishing the race behind me
5 Sprint finish to end MAKING THEIR MARK This has been a bumper month for new members and I would like to congratulate the clubs involved for their efforts. I would like to welcome the following new members who joined the Family of Lions since my last newsletter: All in all I was very pleased with my time (just under 50 minutes as I passed through 10K being my best for the year) and this should serve as a guide to those of you wanting to enter the guess the total time competition. If you wish to sponsor me you can do so online at and, for an added incentive, if you add a comment when making your donation guessing the total time it will take me for all the races, I will give a prize at the end of the year to whoever gets closest. By the time you read this I will also have completed Zone A s contribution, a 5K run in aid of prostate cancer charity Balls to Cancer in Wolverhampton. Zone A Balls to Cancer 5k 29 September Zone B TBC Zone C Shirley Fun Run 10K 53 minutes Zone D Great Midlands Fun Run 8.5 miles 1 June Zone E Shakespeare half marathon 20 April Zone F Blakedown Bolt - 20 June Zone G TBC Zone H TBC Zone I Lutterworth 5K Santa Fun Run 1 December Please find me races, preferably with a Lions connection, and me the details to dg@lions105m.org.uk. Are there any more out there who have yet to be added? MAKING MY MARK There are a number of ways that you can keep up with my activities as District Governor as well as this newsletter. I try to post what I m doing on Facebook (Simon Moss and Lions District One O Fivem) and Twitter (@simonhmoss I have also been writing a blog entitled My Life as a Lion since I was elected as 2 nd VDG and I intend to step up the pace on this blog during my year as DG. You can find it at lionsimonmoss.com MARKING YOUR DIARIES Here are some dates to put in your diaries for the coming year: 10 World Sight Day 20 Autumn Forum St John s Hotel 14 World Diabetes Day 24 District Young Ambassador Final March 2014 District Convention St John s Hotel, Solihull
