1 WELCOME TO CAMP TALLCHIEF Please familiarize yurself with the Camp Tallchief prcedures prvided. By ding this, yu will be making the first steps twards building a rewarding camp experience fr yur child. CAMP STAFF The American Camp Assciatin (ACA) and Girl Scuts f the USA (GSUSA) dictate the age, educatin, and certificatin fr camp staff. Prspective staff members are carefully screened. Once they are hired, staff members attend the mandatry pre-camp staff training. Training sessins include Girl Scut prgram, health, safety, and emergency prcedures. The develpmental characteristics f each age grup are studied as well as the prcedures fr handling behavir challenges that may ccur in the Resident Camp envirnment. We als hire internatinal staff members, wh give us the benefit f a multicultural atmsphere at camp. These cunselrs are eager t share their culture and learn abut ur culture in return. BADGEWORK Girls have the pprtunity t cmplete requirements fr sme badges while at camp. Please remember camp is nt a badge wrkshp. If a girl cmes t camp t d sme requirements fr a badge, she must plan with her unit t try and fulfill the requirements. Because there is s much t be dne, nly a few requirements are usually cmpleted at camp. POSSESION OF DRUGS, ALCOHOL, TOBACCO, WEAPONS The use and/r pssessin f weapns, nn-medicinal drugs, alchl, tbacc, r ther cntrlled substances are strictly prhibited. Fr the safety f all, we reserve the right t search the persnal effects f any camper r staff member. Infractin f these guidelines will necessitate the immediate remval f the vilatr frm the camp premises. Parents will be instructed t pick up their camper, with n refund f camp fees. Camp Tallchief is a nn-smking envirnment; therefre n ne is permitted t smke n camp grunds. LOST AND FOUND Please invlve yur camper in packing fr camp s that she will be able t recgnize her things if smething gets misplaced. It is imprtant that yur camper s full name be placed n all articles f clthing and equipment brught t camp. Every attempt will be made t return lst items t their wners during the camp sessin. KAPERS Kapers are camp chres that play an imprtant rle in Girl Scuting. Girls learn that everyne must d their share f assigned duties. Each unit takes turns ding camp chres, such as cleaning latrines and shwers, picking up trash, sweeping and mpping the dining hall, sweeping the prches f the Ldge, and perfrming the flag ceremny. Within their units, girls are divided int grups f Hppers wh take turns setting and cleaning the meal tables, washing the dishes, and sweeping under the tables. VEHICLES Persnal vehicles are nly allwed n paved r graveled surfaces n the camp grunds in designated areas. Campers wh drive themselves t camp (with prir apprval by their parents/guardians Frm #556F) shall turn in their keys t their cunselrs upn arrival/check-in. The keys will be stred in a lck bx in the Camp Office. N camper is allwed t drive their persnal vehicle while at camp. Campers are nly allwed t transprt passengers t r frm camp when prir apprval by parents f all campers invlved has been retained (Frm #556F). VISITORS Campers experience busy, fun-filled days while at camp. There is n time fr visitrs. Parents are welcme at drp ff n pening days and at pick up n clsing days. Fr the safety and security f all, n parents/visitrs are allwed n camp prperty during camp sessins withut prir ntice and apprval by the camp directr. It is nt acceptable fr any parent/visitr t shw up at camp unannunced. Fr emergencies call t btain apprval. CAMPER BEHAVIOR Campers will be expected t use gd manners and be respectful t themselves, ther campers, staff, and facilities. Anything less will nt be tlerated. Behavir management practices and bullying preventin tactics will be implemented. Please read the camper agreement carefully. Strict expectatins will be in play fr the benefit and safety f all. 2 WELCOME TO CAMP TALLCHIEF SAFETY AND SECURITY The safety and security f Girl Scut campers are paramunt. At Camp Tallchief, the staff will endeavr t bserve gd safety and security measures thrughut the prgram and t fster a safety/security cnsciusness. Prfessinal security is in place frm dusk t dawn, and plans have been made with apprpriate medical and law enfrcement persnnel t prvide security and respnd quickly in case f an emergency. REFUND POLICY If a girl is placed in a sessin but changes her mind and desn t want t attend, the parent must call t cancel. The balance f fees paid in cash may be refunded if the ntice f cancellatin is received tw weeks prir t the first day f the sessin. N refund will be made fr campers arriving with active lice, eggs, r nits. N refund will be made fr campers arriving late, leaving early, r wh are sent hme fr exhibiting imprper behavir. CANCELLATION POLICY Dn t be a n-shw. Early cancellatin ntice makes it pssible fr anther Girl Scut t attend Resident Camp. Being a n-shw culd affect yur camper s placement in ther activities. Call custmer care (918) t discuss any extenuating circumstances that will affect yur camper s attendance at camp. PETS, ANIMALS, PERSONAL SPORTS EQUIPMENT N persnal pets r animals are allwed n camp prperty. Campers and staff are allwed t bring persnal sprts equipment that is relevant t the current prgram they are attending with the knwledge and cnsent f the camp directr. This includes bicycles, riding helmets, sftball glves, etc. All persnal sprts equipment is t be clearly labeled with the wner s name and will be stred with ther camp equipment f its kind. Camp Tallchief is nt respnsible fr any damaged, lst, r stlen persnal sprts equipment that is brught nt the camp grunds. HEALTH AND MEDICATIONS The health and safety f every girl in camp is f the utmst imprtance. It is imprtant fr the camper t be in gd health upn arrival at camp. If yur camper has been ill, she cannt cme t camp until she has been symptm-free fr at least 24 hurs. Campers wh arrive with, r develp, cntagius cnditins r illnesses will need t be taken hme t avid the spread f disease in camp. Parents will nt be cntacted when campers are treated at camp fr minr injuries r minr physical cmplaints. All campers must be fully vaccinated. Please be sure t attach vaccinatin recrds t the Health Histry and Exam frm. The health supervisr wrks under written rders given by the physician n call. Treatment prcedures will cver incidents such as insect bites, minr cuts, bruises, and burns. In the event that a camper suffers such an incident, she will be clsely watched fr signs f cmplicatins. The health supervisr will use prfessinal judgment t determine if a camper shuld receive utside medical care. At that time, the camper s parent will be ntified. If a camper suffers a majr accident r illness, she will be taken t St. Francis Hspital in Tulsa by EMSA, car, r Life Flight if warranted. The camp directr r health supervisr will immediately ntify the parents r the emergency cntact. As part f yur camp fee, the cuncil prvides additinal sickness and accident insurance. Cverage is nt intended t diminish the need fr, r replace family health insurance. ALL MEDICATIONS (including ver-the-cunter) items must be given t the health supervisr upn yur camper s arrival at camp. All prescriptin and nn-prescriptin medicines must be in their riginal cntainers. Put all medicatins in a clear plastic bag and label each cntainer. This is an American Camp Assciatin required standard. If a camper must keep medicatin with her, the health care supervisr must have a letter frm the camper s physician stating that it is necessary and that the camper is able t self-administer the medicatin. SPECIAL HEALTH/MEDICAL NEEDS are accmmdated when pssible. At this time, we are nt equipped, nr d we have specialized staff, t prvide care fr a wide array f special medical needs. If yur camper has a specific need, please cntact us in advance, and we ll wrk tgether fr a pssible slutin and/r t determine availability. Sme special needs we ARE able t accmmdate include epilepsy, insulin-dependent diabetes, asthma, and mst fd allergies. 6 Check-In/Out Prcedures Welcme! Girl Scut camp ffers pprtunities t learn and apply utdr skills, develp self-reliance, explre the natural envirnment, and establish lasting friendships. We re excited yur camper will be jining us. OPENING DAY/CHECK-IN Yu will receive a specific start time (check-in time) n yur registratin details. Stp at the Zink Ranch gate t be signed in, checked ff the weekly master list and receive a Guest Pass. Place the Guest Pass n yur dash against yur windshield. At the Tallchief gate, shw the gate attendant yur Guest Pass. Cntinue in and park in designated parking lt. Vehicles are prhibited in ther areas f camp withut specific permissin. Check-in will take place fr all grups at the Tallchief Ldge. Please have the camper s required frms (health histry/exam, n-cell phne plicy, camper s cnfidential infrmatin, and camper-parent agreement), mail, and any medicatin. Unit staff will guide yu thrugh the check-in prcess and yu ll als receive a checklist card. After check-in, gather yur camper s luggage and unit staff will escrt yu t the assigned ldging. After yur camper is settled in, unit activities will begin, at which pint yu are free t leave. Upn leaving the Tallchief gate, return yur Guest Pass t the gate attendant. Statin #1: Camper Check-in: After visiting the sessin (theme) table, take yur camper t the check-in table inside. Check registratin. Depsit camper mail: Pre-written camper mail t be delivered thrughut the week (Optinal). Label each letter with yur camper s name, sessin title, and day f requested delivery. Statin #2: Health Screening: Visit the nurse fr a health screening. This is where yu will present yur health histry/exam frm and depsit camper medicatin. All medicatin must be in its riginal cntainer. Prescriptins must have riginal label with physician s instructins. Nn-prescriptin medicatin (Benadryl, Tylenl ) must be labeled with camper s name in BOLD letters and accmpanied with parental instructins. Als cmplete a head check fr lice and nits, and if lice/nits are present, yur child will nt be allwed t stay at camp. N refunds will be available. The amunt f time needed fr treatment is apprximately hurs depending n the infestatin. Once treated, a dctr s nte is required t return t camp during the same sessin indicating the absence f eggs, nits, and adult lice. TUESDAY CHECK-OUT begins at 2:30 p.m. with a Family Prgram starting at 2:00 p.m. FRIDAY CHECK-OUT begins at 4:00 p.m. with a Family Prgram starting at 3:00 p.m. After the Family Prgram, yu will receive a check-ut packet that includes a camp patch, health treatment summary if applicable, and a badge sheet (if applicable). Check the lst and fund table. Sign a frm with the unit leader, stating yu are leaving with yur camper and yur relatinship t that camper. Visit the camp nurse t retrieve any medicatin submitted during check-in. Gather yur camper s luggage, duble checking t make sure yu ve retrieved all items befre leaving. Upn leaving the Tallchief gate, return yur Guest Pass t the gate attendant. Give us yur feedback by cmpleting an nline evaluatin when it arrives. 8 HEAD LICE What are head lice? Head lice (Pediculus humanus capitis) are tiny insects abut tw millimeters lng, which live n the scalp and neck f humans. At any ne time, there may be up t 12 adult lice n the scalp. They feed frm human bld and must eat at least twice a day: they cannt survive fr mre than ne day at rm temperature ff a human bdy. A female luse can lay eggs at the rate f abut six per night up t a ttal f 100. The yellw-white eggs, called nits, are stuck t the hair clse t the scalp. As the hair grws, s the nits are carried away frm the scalp and are mre easily visible. Nits can ften be mistaken fr dandruff, flakes f dry skin r ther small items caught in the hair. What causes head lice and wh is at risk? Head lice cannt fly and they cannt jump frm ne persn t the next; they are nt transmitted frm husehld pets r ther animals. Instead, they are usually caught thrugh head-t-head cntact r by sharing hair accessries, such as hairbrushes, cmbs, hats r even by putting these items n tp f each ther. Head lice can als survive fr shrt times n bedding and furniture. Children are particularly prne t infestatin with head lice as they ften have clse cntact with each ther at schl r when playing. There is n link between the presence f head lice and a lack f hygiene r susceptibility t infectin. What are the cmmn symptms and cmplicatins f head lice? Often the first sign f infestatin is an itchy head r neck. The saliva f head lice is irritating n the skin, and itching is ften wrse behind the ears r at the back f the neck. In sme develping cuntries, human head lice have been blamed fr passing rare diseases frm persn t persn. In the US, lice d nt usually cause direct harm t an affected persn but the persistent irritatin and itching can disturb cncentratin and disrupt sleep. When trying t eradicate the lice, care shuld be taken nt t veruse ptentially caustic medicines. Hw d I recgnize head lice? The nly way f cnfirming an infectin with head lice is by seeing either the adult lice r their eggs in the hair. The lice tend t stay clse t the scalp and mve away frm direct light, but the nits are stuck t the hair shafts. In searching fr nits and /r lice, the fllwing are imprtant: Clean, tangle-free hair Bright light, especially natural light Use f a fine cmb - special nit-picking cmbs are available Using a magnifying glass may be helpful Nits may be distinguished frm, fr example, dandruff, by trying t mve them ff the hair shaft. As they have been firmly attached by the parent lice, nits are nt easily remved. Even after treatment, empty nit shells may remain stuck t the hair. The shells tend t be mre than tw t three centimeters away frm the scalp and they are nt a sign f re-infestatin. What is the treatment fr head lice? Self care actin plan Althugh time-cnsuming, an effective way f remving bth nits and head lice is by examining the hair as utlined abve and cmbing ut the head lice and nits. This shuld be dne daily until n further eggs r adults are fund, a prcess that may take up t tw weeks. Remving the lice and nits is easier after the use f a cnditiner when shamping. If a case f head lice is reprted in the schl r play grup, the heads f all children must be examined n a daily basis t ensure prmpt recgnitin and treatment f any spread. If head lice are fund, it is imprtant t wash thrughly all the clthes and bed linen with which the child has been in cntact, and t check the hair f everyne in the husehld. Medicines Several medicated ltins can be used with cmbing t help treat head lice infestatins. Althugh sme (thse that cntain carbaryl r phenthrin) require a prescriptin frm the dctr, thers (thse that cntain malathin r permethrin) can be bught ver the cunter. The ltins must be rubbed well int the scalp and hair, and left fr at least 12 hurs befre being washed ut. These chemicals can have annying smells, and if they are needed fr very yung children r asthmatic children, a slightly different preparatin shuld be used instead. It is recmmended that the treatment be repeated after a week t ensure cmplete remval f any lice hatched frm eggs that survived the first treatment. As with any medicine, it is imprtant t read the label and instructins thrughly first. Cmplementary therapy Sme anecdtal evidence suggests that ther methds may wrk n head lice. These include: Essential ils: care shuld be taken that the cnstituents are safe, as essential ils are ptentially highly txic if swallwed and can cause burns if used directly n skin. Hair gel and live il have been used t suffcate lice n the scalp, but n definite evidence shws that this technique wrks. D nt use the heat frm hair dryers t kill lice; althugh the temperature is ht enugh t kill sme f the lice, the ht air can als scald the scalp and damage hair. What is the utcme f head lice? Head lice are unpleasant but can be treated relatively easy.

9 Resident Camp Girl Scuts f Eastern Oklahma Sun & Health Safety at Summer Camp Explain the facts f sun safety t thse in yur care. Emphasize these pints: Anyne can get skin cancer, even thse with dark cmplexins. Serius burns in childhd are especially harmful. Tell yur child t take cver in the shade under a tree, tent, r umbrella whenever pssible, especially between the hurs f 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Help yur children find cl clthes t use as cver-ups. Be aware sme medicatins may cause reactins t sunlight rash, redness and/r swelling. Cnsult yur physician t find ur what medicatins are likely t prduce reactins. Instruct yur children t visit the nurse r ther adult in charge if she thinks she may have a sunburn r sun pisning. Ask yur children t help their friends be sun safe. Be a rle mdel: practice sun prtectin yurself! Drink plenty f water. Staying hydrated is very imprtant. ALL these tips need t be cnsidered especially n ht vercast, cludy days when yu might nt think abut the need fr them. What T Pack t Keep Kids Sun-Safe All Year Lng Lightweight, light clr, lng sleeve T-shirts and pants, shirts that will cver the shulders. A brad-brimmed hat t prtect face, head, and neck. Sunglasses with UV prtectin. Plenty f water resistant sunscreen with an SPF f 30 r greater; sunscreen sticks r lip balms are gd fr lips, nse and ears. Misturizing cream with an SPF f 30 r greater. DON T pack: tank tps, spaghetti straps, r halter tps. Prescriptin fr Camper Hmesickness This summer, millins f children will get their first taste f independence at a summer resident camp. Fr many, it will als be their first experience with hmesickness. But parents dn t have t feel helpless when hmesickness strikes. The prescriptin fr camper hmesickness is a simple slutin f preparatin and patience. The American Camping Assciatin (ACA) suggests the fllwing tips fr parents t help their child deal with hmesickness at camp: Encurage yur child s independence thrughut the year. Practice separatins, such as sleepvers at a friend s huse, can simulate the camp envirnment. Discuss what camp will be like befre yur child leaves. Cnsider rle-playing anticipated situatins, such as using a flashlight t find the bathrm. Tell children that hmesickness is nrmal, but they can use strategies t help, such as writing letters hme, sharing their feelings and thinking abut the benefits f camp. Dn t make a pick-up plan r a deal with a child t bring them hme if they dn t like the experience f being away. This undermines the child s sense that a parent has cnfidence in her ability t be n her wn. Dn t make negative r anxius cmments abut the separatin t children. Dn t bribe. Linking a successful stay at camp t a material bject sends the wrng message. The reward shuld be yur child s newfund cnfidence and independence. Send a nte r care package (n fd thugh) ahead f time t arrive the first day f camp. Acknwledge, in a psitive way, that yu will miss yur child. Fr example yu can say I am ging t miss yu, but I knw yu will have a gd time at camp. Dn t feel guilty abut encuraging yur child t stay at camp. Fr many children, camp is a first step tward independence and plays an imprtant rle in their grwth and develpment.
