1 Cub Scout National Mall Hike and Seek Prince George s District Spring Camporee April 8-10, 2016 American legion youth Camp Cheltenham, Maryland Things that Packs should know: This event is for Cub Scouts A separate Day Hike and Seek program is available for Boy Scouts and Venture Crews At least one Adult in each Den will need a Camera phone with the ability to upload images to our digital site. Hike and Seek Contacts Lenny Wertz (Vice Chairman of Programs) Francesca Becerra (301) Professional Staff Support Boy Scouts of America National Capital Area Council Prince Georges District Test your knowledge of Scouting History and National Treasures as you participate in our digital Scavennger Hunt of the Monuments in the US Capital, Dens will be challenged to find sites of Scouting and Historical and send in a photo of the group with your find at each point. You will need to use your head and your feet and be prepared for adventure!

2 Hike and Seek Registration and Divisions Please Read Carefully PARTICIPATION REQUIREMENTS - The Boy Scouts of America has established guidelines for its members participation in camping activities. Boy Scouts /Venturers At least one adult must be present for every eight youth members, but no fewer than two adults. At least one adult must be a registered Scouter, 21 years of age or older. Cub Scouts - Cub Scouts may attend with a parent, and may participate in overnight den camping when supervised by his mother or father. If a parent cannot attend, arrangements must be made by the boy s family for another youth s parent, adult relative or friend to be a substitute ( not the Cub leader ) at the campout. To adhere to BSA policy, a notarized note from the youth s parent or legal guardian stating that a friend is allowed to accompany the Cub Scout on the campout and they will NOT be allowed to camp with the child. The child would have to bunk with another Cub Scout if the parent cannot attend. This event is open to all Boy Scout Troops, Venture Crews, and WEBELOS II attending as a guest of a Troop. Event Description: Units will gather at the the Smithsonian Metro Station Saturday Morning April 9, 2016 at 10:00 Am. Each Den will receive a clue book for the destinations they must on the Mall, a long with a Map of the National Mall and a Metro Map. Units may use any additional research material, including on line sources to identify the sights from the provided clues to plan their route for the day. Dens should also pack a sack lunch or make plans for lunch on the Mall. Scouts and Scouters should wear their Class A uniforms Units will need to have at least one cell phone with each Den linked to our District Drop Box Account to upload their pictures during the day. Dens will receive a Drop Box Information Sheet to set up access to the account prior to the Camporee via upon Registration. At 2:00 PM all Dens will gather at our final Hike and Seek Location on the Mall for a Group Picture. We will then depart for home. Dens may choose to Family camp at Cheltenham American Legion Youth Camp on Saturday evening. Dens should plan to arrive in camp during the late afternoon and will join the Boy Scouts for Dinner. Evening Activities will include Catholic Mass, A Scouts Own and a Campfire with an OA Call Out Ceremony. Dens will hold Cracker Barrel and Sunday Breakfast in their Den sites.

4 Hike and Seek SATURDAY April 9, 2016 Schedule 10:00 Meet on the National Mall at the Smithsonian Metro Station to pick up your Hike and Seek Clue Book 10:00-14: *Hike and Seek on the Mall 14:00 *Meet on Mall for Group Photo at Final Seek Location 14: *Return to Home Saturday Evening Events for Packs Camping Out Packs wishing to Family Camp overnight on Saturday may join us at Cheltenham American Legion Youth Camp. Packs may arrive late Saturday Afternoon and will join the Camporee for dinner. Packs must provide their own Cracker Barrel on Saturday and Sunday Breakfast 15: 00-19:00 - Packs Check in at Camporee Headquarters 18: Dinner 19:15 - Colors (Ceremony team only) 19:30-20:15 - *CATHOLIC MASS* - *SCOUTS OWN RELIGIOUS SERVICE* 20:30 - *Campfire and OA Call Out Ceremony 22:00 - Cracker Barrel in sites. 22:00 - Staff Meeting in Gazebo 23:00 - Taps (LIGHTS OUT, QUIET THROUGHOUT CAMP) SUNDAY April 10, :00 - Reveille 07:00-08:30 - Breakfast served at Unit Sites 09:00 - Site inspections, check out and Depart for troops 11:00 - Staff is excused and the Camporee is Closed out for Fall 2014 *Appropriate times to wear Class 'A' Scout uniforms

5 Hike and Seek Camping CHECK IN: All troops are asked to check in between 5:00 and 10:00 PM on Friday, April 8, Check-in will require that each troop send an adult leader and the senior patrol leader to the Headquarters. They should bring a completed attendance roster ( e nclosed ) and a personal health history form for each participating Scout and Scouter. We will collect the roster and medical forms. Medical forms will be returned at to the Scoutmasters at the end of the event on Saturday. MEDICAL INFORMATION FORMS Each adult and youth member attending the Camporee must provide a properly filled out Medical Form ( # ) available on the NCAC website. THE TALENT RELEASE PORTION MUST BE FILLED OUT. Forms will be returned at the conclusion of the Camporee. You may use your summer camp forms for the event. Unit leaders should ensure the medical information provided is accurate and that attendees have any required medication and/or equipment with them. FIRST AID A First Aid station located at headquarters will be staffed at all times on Saturday during the main event hours. Troops camping are responsible to provide their own First-Aid as on any other camp out.. All injuries should be brought to the attention of the First Aid staff during the event on Saturday in order to evaluate, treat and log the incident. If a victim cannot be moved, two ( 2 ) runners should be dispatched to the First Aid station to summon assistance. The runners must be able to quickly and calmly describe the location and nature of the emergency in order to dispatch proper medical personnel and equipment. TOUR PERMITS Local tour permits are not required for District events. However, it is the responsibility of each unit to ensure that parental permission is obtained and that transportation requirements are met. Each vehicle transporting youth must be driven by a properly licensed adult, 18 years of age or older. Vehicles must be insured to at least the minimum level listed on a tour permit and each person must have a seat belt securely fastened. Unless being transported by a parent or guardian, the youth protection three rule should be observed. There should never be a one-on-one situation. A minimum of two adults and one youth, or two youth and one adult is the rule. VEHICLES VEHICLES MAY NOT ENTER THE CAMPGROUND AREA AT ANY TIME! PLEASE LIMIT THE NUMBER OF CARS COMING TO THE EVENT. CARPOOLING IS RECOMMENDED. VEHICLES WILL PARK IN DESIGNATED AREA AND ALL EQUIP- MENT MUST BE CARRIED TO CAMPSITE. THERE WILL BE NO EXCEPTIONS. TRASH All trash must be placed in appropriate containers and removed from the Camporee site at the conclusion of the event. Cooking grease must be placed in a covered container and discarded with the trash. Waste water used for clean-up is to be scattered well away from any inhabited campsite, preferably along a tree line. Solid waste should be screened out before scattering the waste water. Cooking grease and waste water must never be discarded in the latrines. DO NOT PLACE ANYTHING IN THE DUMPSTER! PACK IT OUT! SANITATION Indoor male and female bathroom facilities will be available in the bath house. The shower section is OFF LIMITS. Since both adults and youth will be using the facilities, showering is against BSA Youth Protection guidelines. The cleanliness of the bathhouse is the responsibility of everyone using them. Instruct youth members of proper conduct when using the facilities. The bathhouse will be monitored frequently for cleanliness and, if necessary, units will be assigned to clean the bathhouse. The bathhouse will be inspected by the American Legion and damage will not be tolerated. Anybody observed abusing the facilities will be immediately brought to the attention of the unit leader and that unit will be required to clean the facilities and/or pay for any damage.

6 Hike and Seek CAmping.WATER Units are to provide unbreakable containers to transport water from water source to their campsite. The water source is not to be used for any other purpose, such as washing up, brushing teeth, cleaning cooking/eating equipment, filling personal drink containers, playing, etc. Adult and boy leaders are responsible for maintaining discipline at the water source! Rule violations may mean dismissal from the Camporee FOOD The Camporee Cook Crew will provide dinner for all units on SATURDAY EVENING ONLY to allow units ample time to participate in the days activities on the National Mall. Troops are expected to plan, pack and prepare their own food for all other meals and snacks. The Camporee chair also needs to know of any and all food issues so that information can be passed on to the Cook Crew. GROUND FIRES ARE NOT PERMITTED Fires contained completely above the ground will be permitted. FIRES MUST BE ATTENDED AT ALL TIMES! Charcoal grills and/or propane stoves, with proper supervision, are recommended for cooking. Firewood is not available at the Camporee site. UNIFORMS: Class A Uniform should be worn by all Scouts when participating in the Hike and Seek Activities on the National Mall.. Please dress for the weather and the Event ELECTRONIC EQUIPMENT Usually we encourage Scouts to leave Electronic Equipment at home for our Camping Events. For this Camporee only, cell phones are encouraged as a link between units and as a means of researching the Hike and Seek Clues, Electronic equipment used for entertainment purposes is not appropriate at Boy Scout outings. This includes Radio and Television receivers, music players and all electronic games. Unit electronic equipment in support of health and safety, such as a Radio or Scanner used to monitor weather information, Amateur/CB Radio communication capability or Cellular Telephones, is permitted. Family Radio Service ( FRS ) transceivers tuned to channel seven ( 7 ) are used by event staff for communication. Event participants are not permitted to transmit on this channel at any time. Youth participants at recent events have severely disrupted legitimate communication between staff members. It may become necessary to prohibit these radios by event participants at future events if adult leaders are unable to adequately monitor use of these radios by the youth in their unit. EQUIPMENT Each patrol will need at least one Cell phone with the capability to take photos and upload them to the District Drop Box Account. LOST AND FOUND Items found should be turned in at the Headquarters area. Items may be claimed during the Camporee or at subsequent Roundtables.

7 Hike and Seek Camping CAMPFIRE A Campfire will be held Saturday evening. Units will be requested to participate with a skit and/or a song. A slide show of photos from the Hike and Seek will be shown and prizes will be awarded. The Prince Georges OA Chapter will conduct a call out Ceremony. CHURCH SERVICES Catholic and Non-Denominational church services will be conducted Saturday evening after dinner at 7:15 pm. Location will be announced at the Friday night leaders meeting. Scouts should honor the twelfth Scout Law, A Scout is Reverent, by attending church services or conducting a Scouts Own at their site during that time LOST AND FOUND Items found should be turned in at the Headquarters area. Items may be claimed during the Camporee or at subsequent Roundtables. INSPECTIONS Unit campsites will be inspected during the Camporee. Units should adhere to established Scout practice regarding health and safety, patrol organization and site appearance. A final site inspection will be conducted prior to a Unit departing. Unit leaders can pick up their Camporee patches and Medical forms only after a final inspection is complete. Units departing prior to 9:45 a.m. Sunday morning will need to make prior arrangements for their final inspection. Camporee inspection forms will be returned to the Unit Leader at the next Roundtable PROHIBITED The Boy Scouts of America and/or District Program Committee strictly prohibit the following items or activity. Violation may cause ejection from the event. Alcohol Illegal Drugs Firearms Laser Pointers Liquid Fire Starter Sheath Knives Fireworks Double-bladed axes Cutting or breaking live trees or shrubs Entering another campsite without permission Vandalism Playing Football ( tackle, touch or flag ) ADULT LEADERS ARE TO ENSURE ALL YOUTH MEMBERS ARE PROPERLY SUPERVISED AT ALL TIMES!
