The next ride is for the Disabled kiddies at Burpengary, to give them a few Christmas goodies. You will find nomination forms on the table to elect a new President, Treasurer, Secretary, Committee plus a new Raffle person is needed. I have enjoyed being your President for the past 4 years, but some fresh blood and thoughts are needed. 9 FarRide East #53 Eden Wharf Café, Eden, NSW FarRide East #53 on Saturday 13 th of October 2018 was to the Eden Wharf Café at Eden on the far south coast of New South Wales. I registered on the FarRiders website to ride a FR10, a minimum of 1000 km in a 24 hour period around the check in window of 11:30am-12:00pm AEDT. (Aust. Eastern Daylight Time) Your start time is verified by obtaining a fuel docket that has a location and time stamp on it, with the earliest time stamp permitted being 12:01pm AEDT Friday 12 th October You present this along with the number of kilometres travelled at the check in desk upon arrival at the destination. There is no early check in, but if you are even 1 minute late you are a nonfinisher. A check of the FarRiders website on Thursday night showed 62 riders and pillions from across the country had registered to participate in this ride. I planned to leave home at about 7:00am on Friday 12 th October 2018, ride to Grafton for my start docket then continue down the coast road to Sydney then on to Mittagong for Friday night. A check of the BOM showed morning temperatures in Goulburn, Queanbeyan and Cooma ranging from -2 C to 3 C. With this information in mind I changed my plan to ride down to the coast through Kangaroo Valley from Mittagong. It had been raining for a couple of days and the Weather Bureau have been predicting a major weather event along the East Coast for the weekend. I decide not to put on my wet weather gear but pack it into my pannier and leave home on Bribie Island on my BMW R1200ST (Boris) at about 6:00am. I leave earlier than planned as I anticipate I will be slowed by the tradies peak hour on the Bruce Hwy and Gateway Mwy along with roadworks on the Gold Coast and south of Ballina. As I make my way along the Bribie Rd to the Bruce Hwy for the run south it begins to lightly rain and I pull up next to a bus shelter and put on my wet weather gear. Although I have encountered showers and wet roads all the way to the NSW border I am still running about 40min ahead of my plan. I decide to have an unplanned stop at the BP Chinderah roadhouse for a coffee and to stretch my legs. After a 20min break I am heading south on the Pacific Hwy in light traffic, the showers are becoming more frequent and heavier the further south I travel. Just south of Ballina I am slowed to 80 for the first section of roadwork that stretches for the next 150km. It is raining lightly and I am caught in a line of traffic moving along at 60 to 70kph with no opportunities to get past until around Woodburn. I arrive at the BP Clarenza in South Grafton right on schedule having lost my 20min buffer due to roadwork, slow traffic and rain. It is a quick stop where I refuel and obtain my starting docket time stamped 12:01pm. I am now on the clock for FarRide#53 and continue south on the Pacific Hwy on wet roads. About 10km south of Grafton I ride onto the new section of highway that bypasses Woolgoolga, however the Coffs Harbour bypass is still in the design phase and it s a slow ride, in pouring rain, catching every red light through the town. Once through Coffs Harbour the roadwork through to just north of Newcastle has been completed and it s an 110kph dual carriageway all the way. I make an unscheduled old man s stop at the Caltex Roadhouse on the Taree Interchange and as its only 25km short of my planned stop at Nabiac I use this opportunity to refuel. A quick calculation shows I am still on schedule to be at my booked motel in Mittagong by 8:00pm local time. The closer I get to Newcastle the heavier the traffic is becoming and its stop/start to cross the Hunter River at Hexam and through to the Pacific Mwy interchange. Once on to the Pacific Mwy an overhead sign says there is a traffic accident ahead to expect delays or seek an alternate route. As I am already on the Motorway and there are no exits or u-turn points I am left no option but to sit in the stopped traffic in pouring rain. The traffic creeps forward about 50 metres then stops for 5 to 10 minutes before creeping forward again. Boris is getting hot from all the idling and slow speed so I turn off the ignition with every stop. This went on for about half an hour before we are moving again at the speed limit. The closer I get to Sydney the traffic and rain is getting heavier. I arrive at the first set of traffic lights at Wahroonga in Friday afternoon peak hour traffic in pouring rain. As soon as I stop at the lights my visor immediately fogs up and it s raining too hard to open my helmet. At the next set of lights I briefly open my helmet to read my GPS to see it s about 4km to travel before I need to turn onto the M2. Once onto the M2 although the traffic is heavy it s moving at the speed limit. Spray from the wet road is a bit of a problem but as I am no longer stop/start the fog on my visor has cleared. It is getting dark as the M2 becomes the M7 and fully dark by the time I see signs telling me I m on the Hume Hwy. The rain has eased to a drizzle and its getting 9

10 quite cold by the time I pull into my planned stop for fuel and something to eat at the 7/11 Roadhouse at Pheasants Nest. I have a long stop at Pheasants Nest as its only 25km to the motel in Mittagong. Reception at the motel is closed and in darkness when I arrive at about 8:45pm local time and the key to my room is where we arranged. I am about 45mins behind my schedule having ridden just under 1100km today in some fairly trying conditions. A nice hot shower and a hot cuppa before setting the alarm for 5:00am local time. I wake before the alarm and its cold (5 C) and raining steadily. As I leave the motel my GPS is directing me back to the Hume Hwy toward Goulburn. It would appear that I had not loaded my modified route that would take me to the coast from my computer to my GPS. I pulled up under the awning of a closed service station and deleted the waypoints that would take me toward Canberra and put in a waypoint for Nowra. The new route took me to Bowral before taking me down the range into Kangaroo Valley. There is no traffic, it is still dark and raining steadily as I gingerly make my way down the range hoping all the while the rain and cold is going to keep the wildlife tucked up under the trees. The day dawns to a bleak, cold, wet morning as I ride through the small village of Kangaroo Valley then over the range to Nowra. I am lucky with the traffic lights in Nowra stopping only once as I make my way through town to continue my southbound journey along the Princes Hwy. I ride through Eden and down to the wharf, it is still raining as I pull up next to Peter (FR#176) on his Honda Gold wing from Swan Hill in Victoria. We are about 30 min early for check-in and the carpark quickly fills with bikes. I mingle with the other riders, meet old friends and make new acquaintances. We share our stories of the ride to here and I hear of a couple of riders who went down in the treacherous conditions coming down the range from Canberra After the group photo and check-in was completed, a few of the riders who were on a mission left and the rest of us moved into the café where I ordered a seafood basket for lunch. I had lunch with Graham and Elwyn (FR#379 & 1122), Phil (FR#770), Rex and Debbie (FR#392 & 393) from Victoria. After a very nice lunch and good company I bid them farewell a little before 1:00pm and head off in the rain to my cousins place just north of Canberra. I have ridden 1475Km since I left home yesterday morning and rode 1099km from Grafton to Eden to successfully complete FarRide# of the 62 riders who registered finished FarRide East#53 with 5 riders & pillions coming down in the wet conditions. Fortunately injuries were minor but at least one bike was written off. This time there was 4 FarVirgins completing the challenge of planning and executing a 1000km ride within the permitted timeframe for the first time. Life doesn t get much better. HarryR 10
