Of all my husband's relatives, I like me best. Once over the hill, you pick up speed. I used to get lost in the shuffle; now I just shuffle along with the lost. 9 Maryvale Hotel Ride On Sunday 5 th of March, 14 of us on 7 bikes, a trike and a Harley recovery vehicle (Ute) defied the BOM weather prediction of a wet day and set out on a ride through the Brisbane and Lockyer Valleys to the historic Crown Hotel (opened 1912) in Maryvale for lunch. Maryvale is a small village consisting of a school, the pub and a few houses just off the Cunningham Hwy about 35Km north-east of Warwick on the Darling Downs. We left BP Northbound at 8:30am and rode through Morayfield along Caboolture River Rd to Zillman s Crossing before joining the D Aguilar Hwy at Wamuran. Another detour off the highway at Woodford took us through Mt Archer to Kilcoy. From Kilcoy we turned onto Somerset Dam Rd before riding along Gregors Creek Rd that brought us onto the Brisbane Valley Hwy near Toogoolawah, then on to Esk where we had morning tea at Enigmas Café. Esk was full of motorcycles with many heading to Crows Nest for the launch of their Motorcycle Friendly Town program. This made the café very busy and I felt sorry for the very young girl serving trying to keep up with all the orders. After coffee and cake it was back on the road heading for Gatton. Once through Gatton we turn on to the Gatton-Clifton Rd where we stop at the Thiess Memorial Park, Heifer Creek for a brief comfort stop and stretch. This park is to commemorate the first major project (a sandstone road cutting) completed by Queensland construction giant, Thiess Bros. While here Don spots some ripe Prickly Pear fruit across the road and goes over to pick them. I think he is still trying to remove the fine prickles from his hands and although he says they were tasty he has vowed never to pick any more of them. After we leave the park we are briefly stopped by a roadworks red light and slowed by a 40Kph speed limit along this section of the road that stretches for some kilometres. Once past this we enjoy the sweeping bends as we pass the Darling Downs Zoo and turn on to the New England Hwy near Clifton. We are soon through Allora and turning on to the Cunningham Hwy for the short ride to the Crown Hotel at Maryvale arriving there a little before 1:00pm for our lunch stop. We are warmly greeted by Dennis the publican and a couple of locals enjoying a beer under the cool verandah that surrounds this historic hotel. Drinks and lunch orders taken we relax in the shade of the hotel. After lunch we rode back on to the Cunningham Hwy for the trip home. The run down Cunningham s Gap was hampered by traffic. When we stopped for fuel at Aratula, Don decided fuel there was too expensive and rode on to Amberley where he saved a few cents. As we approach Warrill View we are stopped by roadworks and it takes 4 cycles of the traffic light system before we get through. We turn off the Cunningham Hwy onto the Centenary Hwy at Yamanto. This is a good road allowing us to avoid the heavy traffic that is always present on the Ipswich Mwy. We are soon through Springfield, Jindalee and Fig Tree Pocket before entering the Legacy Way and Airport Link tunnels and joining the Gateway Mwy at Nudgee for the final run up the highway to home. I stop at BP North for a coffee and final goodbyes after a good ride, good company and a nice lunch in the country. I arrive home just after 5:00pm with the GPS showing a bit over 500Km for the days ride Life doesn t get much better! Cheers HarryR 9

18 23 rd Ruptured Budgie Rally May 13-15, 2016 The third weekend in May (the one after Mothers Day) is the set aside every year for the Ruptured Budgie Rally. So if you haven t already done so you had best mark the calendar and keep it free for a weekend of great riding and some fun and frivolity at the Budgie. For those of you that need to get a leave pass we suggest you do something exceptional for Mother s Day. It should earn you enough brownie points from that someone special. Hence the reason we always hold the rally the weekend after Mother s Day every year. Following suggestions from previous years rally goers we have made a few improvements over the years. We are most proud of our 5 star (MGCOQ toilet rating system) semi permanent toilet blocks (replacing the old tent versions). We hope to make the experience a little more comfortable and less stressful when nature calls. There are now two toilets dedicated solely for use by the fairer sex (so they don t have to keep putting the seat down). Some of the proceeds from the rally are set aside for improving the experience each year but more importantly a good portion goes towards helping the local community and other worthy charities. If you have any suggestions for future rallies just drop us a line atinfo@motoguzziclubqld.org. So mark the calendar and come along and enjoy yourself at the Ruptured Budgie Rally. The Moto Guzzi Club of Qld invites all motorcyclists to join us for the Ruptured Budgie Rally at Mingoola. Where is Mingoola you ask? It's about 60km west of Tenterfield on the Bruxner Highway. Check out the maps further down the page. If you haven't been before don't be shy. Pack some warm clothes and your tent and get to the Budgie. See you at the bar! firewood onsite Good camping spots by the river, plenty of Fully catered with licensed bar from Friday dinner to Sunday breakfast All the usual rally awards, plus some not so usual ones $25 entry, includes badge Children under 15 years free entry, no badge Please note that this is a motorcycle rally. No cars (except official vehicles) will be allowed through the gate, no exception so please do not ask. Support vehicles are not wanted or appreciated. If you can't carry it on your bike, don't bring it. The rally is fully catered and licensed so no alcohol is to be brought in for two reasons. Firstly is contravenes our liquor license and secondly the bar is how we raise money to donate to various charities. The less you spend at the bar the less the deserving charities get. The food is put on by the local Lions Club and is reasonably priced. Any profits they make are used to benefit the local community.remember, this is a motorcycle rally. Cars are not permitted on site (Official vehicles excepted). No dogs, cats, glass, dickheads or attitudes. 18
