1 The Megaphone Ulysses Club Darling Downs Branch September 2016 Mailing address:- P.O. Box 1714 Toowoomba Q 4350 Hello Everyone, September has been a mixed month. Quite a few members went on the Southern Cross Rally and by most reports they had a great time yet again. On his way home from the SCR Brian Martens had a run-in with a blown truck tyre and managed to write off his Honda F6B without actually coming off quite a feat, I reckon! Pleased you came hope unscathed, Brian! Elaine was not so lucky when she had a spill at the infamous Cunningham/New England Highways intersection North of Warwick. Her bike is OK but Elaine is stuck in hospital for the time being with a broken leg and collar bone. We wish Elaine all the best for a speedy recovery. A couple of rides were cancelled due to bad weather. For the Saturday morning coffee run, only Ken and I turned up. We had a coffee at and went home - shortest ride ever! Then Fay's Sunday ride to Ballandean turned out to be a good day for a sleep in not a nice day for a ride at all. Hopefully we can do this ride another time. On the plus side was the Memorial Ride to Sommerset Dam which was a great success on a perfect sunny day... and also, of course, the unstoppable Wednesday Wobblers! Also, Brian led some members to Stanthorpe for the Australian Trials Championships on Sunday 25th September. Mick's photos show the amazing skill of these riders. I hope to publish some pics in next month's Megaphone. The ride calendar has been updated until the new year with some great rides coming up. So let's get out there and enjoy these sunny days! Linda Please contributions to Megaphone Editor Linda Carey lindacarey12@gmail.com 50 Water Street Toowoomba P:

3 & P: Mort Street Toowoomba Places Toowoomba, Queensland Automotive PRESIDENT'S REPORT At our recent meeting we were pleased to welcome two new members, Ricky and Keith, and a returning member Trevor (Mingy). We also shared Gordon Green's birthday cake to celebrate his 94 th birthday! Plans for the 30th Anniversary are well under way with only three weeks until the event! There will be no meeting that night but I hope many of you will come along to celebrate this milestone for our Branch. Don't forget to RSVP to the Secretary so we can give Club Glenvale an estimate of numbers for catering purposes. Webmaster Graham Moore has set up a Ulysses Club Darling Downs facebook page. It is a closed group so you need to be invited or request to become a member. There are lots of events and photos there already and it is fast becoming a quick means of communication for our members. We have found a great venue for our Christmas party! Leyburn Hotel on 10th December. More news about this later but I believe there is free camping nearby and the Leyburn Cabins are across the road for hard bed accommodation. So the Branch has much to look forward to as the year draws to a close; it should be a lot of fun! Linda 30th ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION! ULYSSES CLUB - DARLING DOWNS BRANCH wish to invite all past and present members for a meal and drinks at Club Glenvale on Wednesday, 26th October, 2016 at 6.30pm
4 RIDE REPORT ULYSSES MEMORIAL DAY RIDE 14th September 2016 It was great to see a good roll up for the Annual Ulysses Memorial Day Ride: Elaine, Leone, Ken, Pat, Tony Mc, Wayne, Chris, John B, Macca and me! We also welcomed a new member, Ricky on his Triumph and Peter came along in the Mitsi as the Suzy has gone to motorcycle heaven... We set off towards Esk via Hampton and Ravensbourne, where Graham joined us at the Cressbrook Dam turnoff. After a relaxed ride through the twisties we stopped at Esk for a wee break. No time for coffee as the Memorial Day service was to commence at 11am at the Memorial Gardens at Sommerset Dam. The gardens are looking great after the recent rain and have been well tended by volunteers at recent working bees led by Gardens curator, Ray Parker. At 11am, the assembled members were led through the gardens by a bagpiper, then a ceremony was held before the unveiling of the new Memorial Board. Off we headed to Fernvale to the Bakery for lunch. The ride leader may have got carried away by the glorious weather... we came home via Gatton, Heifer Creek, Clifton and Cambooya where we pulled over to say our farewells. Most had peeled off towards home before this but Chris, Ricky, John and Ken stayed until the end. Perfect weather, great company and interesting roads. Thank you to everyone for coming and to Tony for doing a great job as TEC. It was a challenge keeping the flock together among all the other branches! 5 DATES TO REMEMBER 8th October Show and Shine at Darling Downs Harley-Davidson from 8am 7th-9th October Back to a Basic Rally Warwick Branch Ulysses Contact Angry th October Darling Downs Branch 30th Anniversary Celebration Contact Elaine th-6th November 2016 Meet n Greet Celtic Cruisers, Glen Innes Contact Jack Parry th December Darling Downs Branch Christmas Party Road Safety Awarness Display Bunnings Carpark. Sunday The Branch was invited by the local Police to participate in a static display at Bunnings and I offered to attend to represent the Club. On arrival it was apparent that the display was much larger than we had envisaged from the information provided. Ten or so cars spaces were available for motorcycle parking in the display so I didn t have an issue with finding a space. Police Officers Tony Rehn and his assistant Jo had a display set up for the crowd with information sheets distributed and gifts for some of the attendees, spectators and children. The Fire crew had bought along a crashed vehicle and put on displays cutting into the vehicle to free passengers etc. Later in the day El Linda arrived on her way to work and Arthur Dolphin dropped in for a visit. Both Linda and myself were impressed by the display and saw future attendance in events like this as a vehicle to both promote rider safety but to also promote the Club. All up it was a good day and I have a number of chamois to hand out at the next meeting. Brian Martens
6 WEDNESDAY WOBBLERS RIDE REPORTS Ray led 6 Ulyssians from macca s this morning along the New England Highway to Crows Nest, then diverting to Pierces Creek Road to the bakery at Blackbutt for morning tea. After sampling the delicious fare, we proceeded through Yarraman turning off the New England and travelling to Kingaroy via Booie and Hillsdale Roads for a fuel stop. Then to Maidenwell for lunch and home. An adventurous day with frequent stops to enjoy the scenery. Graham Moore We greeted another new rider to our Wednesday Group, with Keith joining with six others riders. We rode out through Clifton, Goomburra Valley and Gladfield to Yangan where we stopped for morning tea. We then headed to Killarney, Warwick and through the back roads to Allora for lunch. Leaving Allora, we headed past the Old Talgi Homestead and onto the Pratten Clifton Road, then home through Back Plains, Felton, Cambooya and Wyreema. We travelled approximately 350klms Today, Rob from Tasmania (Hobart) as well as Bluey (who hadn t had enough riding on the Southern Cross Ride), joined s for a ride to the Bunya s. We headed out through Goombungee, Brymaroo, Irvingdale, Kaimkillenbun and Bell where we stopped for morning tea. We went on to the Kumbia for fuel before heading back over the Bunya Mountains where we had lunch. There we enjoyed a magnificent view of the Downs and Burnett. We headed home via Quinalow, Jondaryan and the Highway (approximately 350klms). A great ride with great company The rain prevented what would be another great ride. Everyone was probably very cranky and gave their partner a bad time!!!!!! Ken and Lorraine Krimmer
