3 A WORD FROM THE EDITOR You may be surprised to get this newsletter just 2 months after the last one when we said that it would only be published every 3 months. However if members continue to submit interesting articles it will be sent out every 2 months. This time we have a great article from Eric Forshaw and also one from the Ipswich Branch by Barry Qualischefski. Great work!!!!!!! The rally is over for another year. The weather was great and all who attended enjoyed a great weekend. I must say a big thank you to all the members who worked hard over the three days. If I start to name people I am bound to forget someone. The weekend after our rally Ted and I, along with Bruce, Robert, Brian, Buster and John and Tracey, attended the Kingaroy Rally. It was held at their new grounds in Kingaroy and saw a good number of engines and a large number of tractors and trucks on display. We travelled up on Friday Morning (Ted towing the van and me in the ute with the engines in the back) and came home Sunday afternoon. We all had a good weekend. More about these rallies in the next issue. 4 FROM THE PRESIDE TS WORKSHOP Here is my first report as President of the club, firstly a big thank you to Robyn and Ted for hosting our AGM. What a busy few weeks I ve had attending as many rallies as I can. First was the Caboolture rally held at Woodford show grounds. Bruce, Ted, Robyn John, Tracey and myself from our club attended along with a few members from our sister club from Ipswich. The weather was great and there were many displays of engines, trucks and tractors. Next was our own rally and again the weather was in our favour. It was great to see many exhibitors from other clubs come along with their displays to make a fantastic weekend which was enjoyed by all who attended. A big THANK YOU must go to the ladies for the great job they did in running the food stall, and not forgetting our two master chefs, Brian and Buster. Of course this could not have happened without our hard working Robyn and our amazing members who all pitched in to make this another successful rally. The following weekend saw me packing up the ute and heading to Kingaroy. Once again the weather was fine, and I was joined by 6 of our club members. There were 61 engines on display in the compound and trucks and tractors everywhere you looked. Now I m back home putting my feet up and relaxing before our next meeting at Pam and Buster s place. 5 Model T Ford Mountain Tour 25/04/13 to 28/ By Eric Forshaw 40 years ago Bill Landy in his restored 1916 Model T Ford together with a number of mates in their cars set out for an adventurous tour from Gippsland in Victoria over the mountain ranges to Corryong and back. On the way back Bill turned his Model T over in Japan creek. The creek is not very big and the car was retrieved so Bill drove it onto Omeo. After this event Bill was given the name Iron Man of Omeo 40 years on Bill s son arranged a 4-day trip to as far as possible follow the route that his Dad had traveled with 6 enthusiast from the Victoria Model T club. The tour was named Iron Man of Omeo mountain tour My son in Law Alan Weatherhead was one of the 6 so I was invited to go along to make a video for them. Cars lined up before departing on the trip Bill is still alive so he also came along for the ride in his son s car. We all gathered in Traralgon and travelled the first leg to Omeo via Glengarry,Heyfield, and Maffra where we made a stop to visit the Maffra shed motor museum. What a great museum for a small town and community. It is a credit to them. Maffra Motor Museum We then pressed on stopping outside Bairnsdale for lunch and fuel. If you look on a map you will see that as far as possible we stuck to the back roads as the average speed of the Model T is about km hr. From Bairndale to Omeo was on the Great Alpine highway so tested the stamina of the Mode T s they all made it with flying colors.

6 The next day saw us travel from Omeo to Cudgewa via Tallangatta. The first part of the run was covered on dirt road and was climbing most of the way Some of the cars parked at the top of the hill. Out side of Tallangatta we met up with Tony Reynolds the only other surviving member of the original tour. In fact it was Tony who with his vintage Buick pulled Bill s Model T out of the creek and the amazing thing was Tony still has and showed us the actual rope that was used. The other interesting thing was that Bill and Tony had not seen each other over the 40 years since the incident so you can imagine the reunion it was for them to meet up again. We camped on a farm outside of Cudgewa and woke on Saturday morning to thick fog. The cars leaving the Farm in the fog Saturday leg was Cudgewa back to Omeo on a different route to the one we came up on but still just as hilly and this is the day we crossed over the actual Japan Creek where Bill turned the Model T over. 7 Looks like a tall tale of the days events!!!! At Omeo Caravan Park Sunday saw us make our way back to Traralgon from Omeo along the same route we had come up on. A total of 974km were travelled over the 4 days. We had a recovery vehicle and trailer travelling with us but all the cars had been so well prepared that none of them had to be trailered. There were only minor things like punctures, fan belts coming off and coils not working to full capacity but nothing that stopped the cars. All in all a great run and the most beautiful countryside with Alpine Victoria out in it s autumn colors. The final stretch of dirt road before destination. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ An from Peter Phillips on rally weekend wished us all the best for the rally. He apologised to Buster and Pam that he couldn t be there to help them cook (and Eat)! All is going well in NZ and both he and Lorna love living there. He is in the process of getting a trailer made for the tractors which was to be ready for the first show at Matamata on 5th October. He also found the problem with the W14. It was the fuel pump so no more cursing when it won t start. 7

10 CLUB NEWS The AGM was held in August and the only two positions to change were that of President and Vice President. We welcome Robert Burgess as President and Brian Callighan is once again on the committee as Vice President. Welcome to new members Jason Hite, Matt Archer, Mark Harrison, Barry Austin and Josh Aitken who all joined following the rally. Also welcome to George and Narelle Robinson as new members of the Ipswich branch. The rally can be regarded as a success this year. Exhibitor numbers were slightly down mainly due to the fact that it was federal election weekend. The main raffle prize was won by Jeff Barbeler from the Kingaroy Club. Our thanks to Shirley Marsh for the donation of this prize and commiserations to all the people who wanted to win it. Don t forget to mark your calendar with the date of the Christmas party (24th November). Thanks to Bruce and Irene for offering to provide the venue. Come along and enjoy a social day. As the club would like to list the meeting venues for next year early in the year please notify the secretary if you are able to host a meeting on any of the following dates:-feb. 8th, March 8th, April 12th, May 10th, June 14th, July 12tth, August 9th. As most people are busy this allows them to organize their calendar. 12 THE HAIR CUT Sent in by George Rinaldi A teenage boy had just passed his driving test and inquired of his father as to when they could discuss his use of the car. His father said he d make a deal with his son, You bring your grades up from C to a B average, study your Bible a little and get your hair cut, then we ll talk about the car. The boy thought about that for a moment, decided he d settle for the offer, and they agreed on it. After about six weeks his father said, Son, you ve brought your grades up and I ve observed that you have been studying your Bible, but I m disappointed you haven t had your hair cut. The boy said, You know Dad, I ve been thinking about that, and I ve noticed in my studies of the Bible that:- Samson had long hair, John the Baptist had long hair, Moses had long hair and there s even evidence that Jesus had long hair. (You re going to love the Dad s reply.) Did you also notice they all walked everywhere they went? 12
