OCTOBER ISSUE 213 Glasshouse Mountains Ulyssian Newsletter of the Ulysses Club Inc. Glasshouse Mountains Branch PO Box 380 Morayfield QLD 4506 glasshousemountains.ulyssesclub.org Crossing The Bar Sunset and evening star, And one clear call for me! And may there be no moaning of the bar, When I put out to sea. But such a tide moving seems asleep, Too full for sound and foam, When that which drew From out of the boundless deep Turns again home. Twilight and evening bell. And after that the dark! And may there be no sadness of farewell, When I embark. For tho from out our bourne of Time and Place The flood may bear me far, I hope to see my Pilot face to face When I have crost the bar. Alfred Lord Tennyson

Hi Everyone PRESIDENT REPORT SEPTEMBER 2015 Well Spring is here, although the last couple of weeks have been a bit cold, wet and stormy. The Memorial ride had a fantastic turn out of Ulyssians, the weather was glorious, and some names were put on the Ridden On bollards. Towbar s family joined us at the Memorial Gardens to see his name put on our bollard. After the ceremony we went for a ride to Miss June's, where we partook in a lovely BBQ Redcliffe had their Odyssey, which I am proud to announce that Glasshouse ran away with the trophy and most of the medals, way to go Glasshouse. Unfortunately work stopped me from being able to join the fun, maybe next year. Redlands branch has put out an invitation to go to The Big Cart Track, I reckon we should take up the challenge and see if we can snaffle another trophy. Christmas is fast approaching and I am looking for some donations of goodies to put into our raffle. So if any one has some goodies that they would care to put into our raffle, please bring them along each week. Our Christmas Party at Archer Falls is being worked on, will have tickets for sale as soon as it is finalised. I am pleased to see so many people turn up each week at our club, and hope that you will continue to do so. Thankyou, and will see you next week. From Storm. Lyndell Ward # On behalf of the Glasshouse Branch. I would like to thank AVERIL for all her hard work she has put in over the years, being club historian and also doing the web for us. 8 Boobs on Bikes Ride On Saturday 22 nd August, a group of keen bikers met at Shell Beerwah to head for Biloela for the night. Nuts, llama, Robyn & Cliffy, Judge & Jury, Peta and myself joined Wendy & Terena, Jo, and Brendan from Boobs on Bikes. We headed up to Kenilworth where we stopped for a coffee. The weather was a bit showery but got worse as we headed closer to Gympie. We tried to circle around it heading out through Imbil past Widgee onto Kilkivan where we fuelled up and waited for Nuts. The rain eased and we headed off to Ban Ban Springs where we had snack and fuelled up. Judge & Jury did a turn around and headed home. Off we went up the road to Gayndah then Monto where some of us fuelled up again. Next stop was Biloela at the Commercial Pub and the Biloela Motel. We settled in at the pub time for a drink, a game of pool, a chat with the locals and a relax. Dinner was a supreme pizza from the pub it was delicious!!! Wendy & Jo sold raffle tickets at the pub raising $450 for Women s Cancer. Thanks must go to Peter at the pub for making us feel very welcome - our bikes were all under cover for the night too!! Next morning coffee was an essential before leaving, luckily one of the locals told us to go the IGA for breaky. Fuelled up we headed home. It was a nice day for a ride. We parted company at Kilkivan some heading for the highway others going the back way through the hills. It was a great weekend - great company and a great ride and of course a great cause!! June 8

Today many members gathered together for Memorial Day rides, in various locations to remember those friends who have ridden on. President Helena wrote an address to share with members and it follows here... We give gratitude to our Club s founding fathers for having the foresight to form the Ulysses Club and we pay homage to them - along with all the members who had embraced this chosen lifestyle. The National Memorial ride day was introduced primarily to remember all those motorcycle riders mates, friends, companions and mentors who we once rode with, and who sadly, have Ridden On. Today is an opportunity to stand united, with the one common sentiment, together we reminisce the lives of the vast number of Members whose life s journey has come to an end - whether it be by age, accident or illness. Today we reflect on the influence that these members have had on us as individuals, the friendships formed, all the good times along with the sad. The contributions that they have made to our Club, the impact that this great club of ours has had on their lives. Our thoughts extend to the members family, their colleagues and their respective communities who have all suffered a great loss. For some members, this Club was their life - and they have ridden on complete and content knowing that they enjoyed the comradeship, the companionship, had fun and enjoyed doing something that they were extremely passionate about. Many lives have been enriched by their association with you, the members of the Ulysses Club. You have generously imparted wisdom, warmth and compassion, and extended the hand of friendship in times of need. These gestures, although natural in nature, should never be underestimated in terms of worth. Although we are gathering all around Australia today to remember our Ulysses mates who have ridden on, please also take the time to consider those motorcyclists, beyond the Ulysses family, who have ridden on, or suffered serious long term injuries. Embrace the opportunity to continue to look out for each other, support each other and accept each other for who they are. Life is too short Use this day to celebrate your mates, friends, companions and mentors lives and remember to make the time to continue to enjoy life, growing old disgracefully.. Have a safe journey home". 9

FarRide East #35 Eungella Chalet, QLD FarRide East #35 is the latest in the series of Ride to Eat rides promoted by FarRiders and it was only the week before that I had completed FarRide East#34 to Young, NSW. Don Gregory (BMW K1200RS), Gordon Palmer (KTM 990) and I (BMW R1200ST) registered online at farriders.com to participate in FarRide East #35 to the Eungella Chalet west of Mackay on 30 th May When registrations closed 32 riders and pillions had registered. The website with all the information about FarRiders can be found at On this occasion 11:30am to 12:00pm is the check in window and if you arrive at 12:00:01pm you are deemed to be a non finisher, to enjoy your lunch and encouraged next time to meet the time window. For this FarRide the earliest start time accepted will be 12:00pm on 29 th May I obtained my start docket from BP Bribie Is, with a time stamp of 12:01pm and rode through to the on-ramp to the Bruce Hwy near the Big Fish to meet Don at 12:30pm. Don had obtained his start docket at Brighton and was waiting when I arrived at the agreed time. There is moderate traffic moving at the speed limit as we ride north on a clear warm day to meet Gordon at the Golden Nugget Roadhouse near Gympie. Gordon is riding south from his home near Childers to meet us at Gympie and this will give him the required mileage to finish the FarRide at Eungella. Don and I arrive at the Golden Nugget just after 1:30pm, have a bite from the hotbox there while waiting for Gordon to arrive. Gordon arrives a little before 2:00pm and apologises for being late as he has been held up by road works north of Gympie. The three of us are back on the road right on 2:00pm in moderate traffic as we negotiate the traffic lights of Gympie before we join the conger line of vehicles in the 90kph zone that stretches north to Curra. We had been warned by a truck driver at the Golden Nugget of police activity in the 80kph zone approaching Maryborough but they had gone by the time we rode through, however as we were passing through Apple Tree Creek the police had stopped a motorcyclist and I hoped it was not a FarRider. We arrive at the BP service station in Gin Gin at 4:20pm where we meet Jack Abbot who is on his first FarRide. After a quick 8min stop we are back on the highway riding directly into the setting sun. Jack has joined us for the ride as we wind our way toward Miriam Vale. It becomes dark just south of Miriam Vale and I am always nervous and wary of wildlife in this area. There is still fairly heavy traffic and we use every opportunity to pass slower vehicles as we catch them. Just before the Calliope interchange as I am passing a truck I catch in the corner of my eye the all too familiar shape of a white Nissan Patrol hidden behind a cutting. I did not see a flash and I hope the truck has shielded me from the radar beam. Before long we are through to our next scheduled stop at the BP Marmor truck stop about forty kilometres south of Rockhampton. It is just after 6:30pm and we have planned to have a long stop here for dinner. Jack has continued on into Rockhampton and we will meet him again when we stop to camp in the rest area at Yaamba. Gordon and I were seated eating while Don was scratching through the drinks cabinets looking for a bargain when a customer returned his untouched steak meal to the counter claiming it was not cooked. The counter staff refunded the customer his money for the meal and he left. The staff offered us the meal as it would only be thrown out, Gordon and I declined the offer as we had already eaten but as Don had not yet ordered he gratefully accepted the free meal. 10

After dinner we rode the last eighty odd kilometres through Rockhampton to our campsite in The Iron Butt Motel in the rest area at Yaamba. A couple of beers in the pub across the road as a nightcap was followed by a restful sleep in my swag beside my bike in the park. I thought to myself as I climbed into the swag how different are the conditions here tonight compared to freezing my nuts off last week end. I awoke before the alarm at 5:30am to the thickest fog I have seen for many years. Jack is up, packed and leaves as he wants to see a friend in Mackay before heading up the mountain to Eungella. We pack our damp gear on to the bikes and feel our way on to the highway in the foggy predawn gloom just after 6:00am. I ride at about 60kph with my visor up and can barely see Don s tail light less than twenty metres in front. The fog was to stay with us for about fifty kilometres to Marlborough where it broke into patches almost to St Lawrence. While packing at Yaamba I heard Frank Glynn-Armstrong s BMW go past and as we pass the new Puma Roadhouse at Marlborough we see Frank pulled in there having breakfast along with another FarRider. Once the fog has lifted it clears up to a beautiful morning and we are soon eating the miles. I see other motorcyclists stopped at the couple of roadhouses along the way and assume they could only be FarRiders this far from civilisation this early in the morning. We get to the roadhouse at Carmila right on 8:00am where we refuel and have a hearty breakfast before starting on the last 170Km leg of our ride to Eungella. As we approach Sarina I notice there are dark clouds gathering toward the mountains and the road is wet in parts as we near Mackay. We turn left in Mackay for the final run up the Pioneer Valley to Eungella. It is a picturesque ride along this road with the sugar mills and little villages scattered along the way through the cane fields. We arrive at the Eungella Chalet at 10:50am, 40min early, into the mist with 1028Km completed since 12:00pm yesterday. The hotel car park was full of motorcycles and I am met by old friends and introduced to new ones. We are met by fellow Glasshouse Mts. Ulyssian and FarRider Frank Glynn-Armstrong who passed us while we were having breakfast at Carmila and Brookster, another Ulyssian, Don and I met on the Nullarbor while travelling to the Albany AGM in 2010 and we introduced him to FarRiders. We checked in with our start times being recorded and verified as ok by team FarRider and lined up for the group photograph. After the photos were taken we sit in the café talking to the other riders over lunch and a coffee. It is at this time Clint from Team FarRider states that for the first time all riders who have registered for a FarRide have finished on time and he welcomes and congratulates all the new 11 Base of the Mountain, Eungella Don, Frank and Harry FarRide#35 (Photo Brookester) Eungella Chalet.

FarRide#35 FarRiders on their first FarRide. The smaller number of riders at this FarRide has made it a lot more sociable allowing me to meet nearly all the participants before I bid all goodbye and we start our long trek home a little before 12:30pm. We have not made any plans to stop overnight anywhere on the way home and will make that decision based on how we feel as we ride into the night. Gordon, Don & Harry, FarRide#35 (Photo Brookester) I program the GPS to take us back to Sarina through Eton to avoid the traffic in Mackay. It has us turn off the Eungella Rd at Mirani and although I have the GPS set to avoid dirt roads about ten kilometres along the road turns to gravel for about five kilometres, the first fail of the Garmin, then when we arrived in Eton it had us turn into another gravel road that ran out to a dead end, the second fail of the Garmin. However, Gordon found our way out of the GPS mess and quickly had us back on track to Sarina and before long we arrive back at Carmila to refuel before the long run down the Marlborough stretch to Rockhampton. There is very little traffic heading south toward Rockhampton and we are eating miles as we cruise at the speed limit. We get to the BP roadhouse at Marmor south of Rockhampton just on sunset at 5:15pm where we have a long stop for fuel and dinner. I put on an extra couple of layers under my jacket as I am expecting it to become much cooler as we ride into the night. As we are preparing to leave the roadhouse FarRider#504, Spada rides in on his Honda Blackbird. He is planning on riding straight through to his home in Brisbane and I wish him safe travels and leave him to refuel. We are back on the road in fairly heavy traffic and are stopped by road works near Raglan. The traffic eases substantially once we pass the Gladstone exit at Mt Larcom. I am again fairly nervous about wildlife along the lonely stretch from Miriam Vale to Gin Gin however there is no noticeable road kill and we are travelling at the speed limit. We arrive at the Apple Tree Creek roadhouse a bit before 9:00pm where we bid farewell to Gordon. He has offered us a bed for the night but as both Don and I are feeling ok and as it is only about three hours to home from here we declined his generous offer. As we stop at the BP roadhouse at Torbanlea to refuel for the last time on this ride, a coach full of high school students has arrived and the place is chaos with the console operators being well and truly overloaded. It becomes a bit cool with little patches of fog as we approach Gympie and once 12

we pass through the restricted zones around the road works near Cooroy it was great to be able to cruise at the speed limit on the 110kph highway till the turnoff to home. I said goodbye to Don at the Pumicestone Rd off ramp arriving home at Bribie Island a little stiff and tired at about 12:00am for a total of 1385Km for the day, 1028Km for the FarRide and 2040Km for the weekend. The bikes and the riders all went well with no mishaps or near misses and I enjoyed the ride and the company. It was good to catch up with old friends that I only see on FarRides and to make new ones that I hope to see on future FarRides. I am not planning any further FarRides until FR East#37 in October to Texas. As this is a local FarRide I think I will ride my classic 1974 BMW R75/6 to this event. Life doesn t get much better.
