12 BUNDABERG OVERNIGHT RIDE TH 12 TH February 2017 By Michelle Barnes - Spyder 4 Bikes, 2, trikes and 3 cars heading off on what promised to be an enjoyable if not a VERY WARM day. Even those of us with the luxury of Air Con were not immune to the heat. With Gympie being our first stop for fuel top ups and leg stretches we headed off up the highway with Ambo leading the way. At Gympie we spilt into two groups. One group headed straight for Maryborough then on to Bundy. The rest of us followed the planned route and headed out to Rainbow Beach. Where we had lunch and a light refreshment. Some even tried some localbake goods. After lunch we headed for Maryborough, This was on a small stop again for fuel top ups. Then on to Bundy. Arriving in Bundy we were joined by Ambo s family, and later by Nuts and Margret. Once we had all settled in to our cabins it was time to hit the pool. Even though not all of us brought our swimmers some did not have a choice about getting in or not But that is what happens when you dangle your feet over the side. After everyone was successfully water logged and sufficiently cooled off it was time to turn our attention to happy hour and plan of attack for the evening. It was decided that we would go into the CBD to have a look at the Chinese New Year festivities (A bit of a non-event).then back to the leagues club across the road for dinner. Then the quest became How are we going to do this, with 20 people and 3 cars? the answer was those of us that had not had a drink or were not drinking would run shuttle runs. Then the question was asked if the Leagues club had a bus that would assist. And that answer was Yes they would pick us up from the CBD and bring us back to the club so we could have dinner. So the time came for the GMH Ulysses Shuttle service to begin. We managed to do this in only a few trips with each vehicle, and let s just say there were hijinks aplenty with walking sticks and long legs. As I said earlier the New Year Festivities were a non-event. So by the time we had all walked up one side of the street and down the other that was pretty much it. A few market stalls and a few food stalls, and most were 2 or 3 deep and you could not get close enough to have a good look at their wares. The plan of catching the League club fun bus went off without a hitch. It did two runs and the GMH Shuttle did one. The meals were very enjoyable and good size. After dinner a few enjoyed a little flutter on the pokies with varying degrees of success. When it came time to leave the short walk across the road was to be the order of the day. But as some of the group walked out of the club the fun bus was there ready and waiting so in they got.

13 Sunday morning we woke to what again promised to be an enjoyable if not a VERY WARM day. Some of the group had already left in an attempt to get ahead of the heat. And some were doing their own thing. For the rest of us Ambo had arrange for us to join the local Bundy Ulysses Branch for breakfast in a local café. Big Thank You to Neil and Jill for hosting us for an all but brief but enjoyable visit. Maybe someday we can return the favour. After breakfast again the group broke into two those that head straight down the highway and those that took the planned route the back way home. After leading Bundy our first pit stop was Biggenden and you could already feel the heat start to encroach upon us. In an attempt to keep as many of us cool as possible Peta joined us in the car, much to her delight. Mind you the occasional snake lolly might have helped. And she could nod off without here head rolling around like a bobble head doll. Continuing down the Isis highway heading towards Goomeri the turn off on the Burnett Highway came up quicker for some than for others. Goomeri was our next pit stop. Although not all of us took advantage the stop for a leg stretch (to bloody hot). Nanango was our next and final stop. We pulled up out the front of the Hotel Commercial and received a warm greeting from a couple of locals outside and an even warmer one inside with the offer of a free ham and salad roll. So after a light refreshment and a lovely fresh roll, we said our goodbyes headed off on the final leg to home, with a BIG THANK YOU to Ambo for organizing a great weekend. And we look forward to the next one. Spyder ************ FOR SALE Honda Valkyrie $8,000, Very negotiable for Ulysses members km, in good condition nothing to spend. Roadworthy Cert available. 14 Far Ride East #43 The Settlers Tavern, Mount Beauty, VIC. FarRide East #43 on Saturday 18 th of February 2017 is the first eastern FarRide on the 2017 Far- Ride Calendar. This ride was to The Settlers Tavern at Mount Beauty on the edge of the Victorian High Country and Snowfields. Don Gregory (FR#293), Frank Glynn-Armstrong (FR#418) and I registered on the FarRiders website to ride a minimum of 1000 km in a 24 hour period around the check in window of 12noon-12:30pm AEDST. (Aust. Eastern Daylight Saving Time) Your start time is verified by obtaining a fuel docket that has a location and time stamp on it. You present this along with the number of kilometres travelled at the check in desk upon arrival at the destination. There is no early check in, but if you are even 1 minute late you are a non-finisher. A check of the FarRiders website on Thursday night showed 104 riders and pillions from across the country had registered to participate in this ride. I have planned to leave home early on Friday 17 th February 2017, meet Don at his place at Brighton, ride to Moree for our start dockets at lunchtime, ride through to Young for the night and then complete the ride into Mount Beauty on Saturday 18 th February at 12noon for the distances required to finish a FR1000. Frank has chosen a coastal route with his start docket in Port Macquarie as he wishes to visit friends along the way. On Friday morning I wake early and leave my home on Bribie Island a little before 5:00am. I had filled my fuel tank the previous afternoon as I don t need my start docket until lunch time therefore I don t need to stop at the servo on the way out. Even though it s early the trip down the freeway is the usual traffic gridlock from North Lakes. I lane split and filter through to the Deagon Deviation where I turned off to meet Don at his place. As the Motorway was a carpark we decided to ride down Sandgate Rd to the tunnel at Toombul. Although the traffic was heavy it was moving freely between the traffic lights and we are soon into the Airport Link Tunnel and on to the Inner City Bypass before turning into the Legacy Way Tunnel. It was very warm in the tunnels and the day has dawned bright and clear as we rode on to the Western Freeway and Centenary Hwys. After we leave the Centenary Hwy at Yamanto the traffic is once again at a standstill but once past the turnoff to Amberley there is only light traffic right through to Warwick. We arrive at the Caltex Roadhouse just East of Warwick at about 7:30am to refuel. This should give us the range to get to Moree for the start of our FarRide. Don decides the fuel price is too expensive and that fuel should be cheaper in town however this was not to be the case. He calculated he would have enough fuel to get to Inglewood and it should be cheaper there. Although I have enough fuel to get to Goondiwindi, Don arrives in Inglewood on fumes only to discover the price here is almost the same as Warwick. Back on the road the bikes are running nicely, it is a clear warm day that is perfect motorcycling weather and before too long we are through Goondiwindi, Boggabilla and on our way down the Newell Hwy to Moree. We arrive in Moree just after12:00 noon local time and as we are too early to for our start docket we take advantage of the extra time to have lunch. As an elder of the Pieata Tribe we find the Moree Bakery to sample their wares. We refuel at the Woolworths Caltex in Moree, giving me a start docket time of 12:42. We are now on the clock and need to be in Mt Beauty before 12:30pm tomorrow having completed 1000Km+ to get there. It is now quite hot with temperatures in the high 30 s. I had planned for the heat by freezing a couple of 1.5litre water bottles and wrapping them in a towel in my pannier. We ride south from Moree toward Narrabrai, Coonabarabran and on to Gilgandra where I have planned to get fuel. The further south we go the hotter it gets requiring us to stop for a drink at least every hour. It is 39 C when we stop at a rest area in the Piliga State forest between Narrabrai and Coonabarabran. This rest area features the planet Neptune and is part of a virtual solar system set up along the highways leading to the Siding Spring observatory near Coonabarabran. After we pass through Coonabarabran and ride over the Warrumbungle Range we can see storms forming in the southwest. It is very hot (38-40 C) as we ride toward the storms with the road sometimes taking us toward them and other times around them. About 30Km north of Gilgandra we catch the edge of one of the storms, with strong cross winds, thunder and heavy rain. We did not stop to put on our wets as the rain was quite refreshing after the heat we had been riding in. Once we had ridden through to the other side of the storm we encountered a dust storm that coated us in red mud. A quick fuel stop in Gilgandra and we are heading south again. It is again very hot after the coolness of the rain to the north and we are 14

15 completely dry before we get to Dubbo. Between Dubbo and Wellington I see 43 C on the thermometer on the dash of my bike. The wind is so hot it burns your face if you open your visor to let in the breeze. Another quick drink stop under a shady tree in the main street of Cudal before riding on to Young. Here we refuel before going on to our motel for the night arriving there just on dark a little before 8:00pm local time having ridden just over 1200Km today. Dinner and a couple of beers at the local Services club before retiring for the night. It is still dark when the alarm set for 6:00am sounds and when we venture outside we see it has been raining overnight. A check of the weather radar shows showers heading our way from the southwest and we delay our departure until 6:50am to allow most of the rain to pass. It is just on dawn when we leave and I am hoping the rain will keep the wild life sheltering and off the road. We head south on the Olympic Hwy from Young through the many cherry orchards that surround this town on a wet road encountering a few light showers along the way. Just south of the small village of Wallendbeen we turn off the highway onto the Old Gundagai Rd that will take us through to the Hume Hwy. This is a great piece of road with no traffic as it winds its way through the rolling grain fields with sheep grazing on the stubble. We have planned to have breakfast at the Dog on the Tuckerbox five miles from Gundagai and arrive there around 7:50am. Back on the road at 07:30 after breakfast we slab it down the Hume toward Albury. There is a bit of traffic about but all travelling at the speed limit and it has cleared into a beautiful sunny day. Just before Albury we turn off the Hume at the Thurgoona exit and ride to Lake Hume and the Hume Dam on the Murray River. When we stop at the Hume Dam, Don tells me our exuberant riding down the Hume Hwy has used more fuel than planned and we will need to find fuel for him before our planned destination in Mt Beauty. A search on the GPS showed fuel at the Kangaroo General store about 7km further down the road where Don put a splash of fuel into his tank. It was a very enjoyable ride along the shore of Lake Hume and then down the Kiewa Valley to our destination of Mt Beauty where we arrived about 30min early for check-in. The car park at the tavern was already full of motorcycles. As we were early Don made a bee line for the local op shop in search of those elusive bargains and I took the opportunity to fill my fuel tank to start the ride home. Check in opened at 12:00 and after check-in closed at 12:30 we lined up for the group photo. The tavern put on a good lunch and we socialised with the other riders until it was time for us to leave to begin the journey home. FarRide East #43 I have travelled 1027Km (GPS) from Moree to complete the Far- Ride and 1575Km since leaving home yesterday morning. Don has 1039Km on his odometer for the FarRide as he put on extra kilometres searching for those op shop bargains. Frank completed his FarRide with 1009Km from his starting point in Port Macquarie. 88 riders and pillions including 19 new FarRiders finished FarRide East#43. I congratulate all the first time FarRiders, having accepted the challenge of planning and executing a 1000km ride within the allowed 24hr time window to earn their new FarRider Number and welcome them to the growing FarRider group. I hope to see many of you on future FarRides. To those that didn t make it for various reasons my condolences and I hope to see you complete the challenge next time. If anyone is interested in doing a FarRide in the future please go to the website at or talk to Don Gregory or myself, Harry Randall. Life doesn t get much better. HarryR WIN AN INDIAN SCOUT! 18 23 rd Ruptured Budgie Rally May 13-15, 2016 The third weekend in May (the one after Mothers Day) is the set aside every year for the Ruptured Budgie Rally. So if you haven t already done so you had best mark the calendar and keep it free for a weekend of great riding and some fun and frivolity at the Budgie. For those of you that need to get a leave pass we suggest you do something exceptional for Mother s Day. It should earn you enough brownie points from that someone special. Hence the reason we always hold the rally the weekend after Mother s Day every year. Following suggestions from previous years rally goers we have made a few improvements over the years. We are most proud of our 5 star (MGCOQ toilet rating system) semi permanent toilet blocks (replacing the old tent versions). We hope to make the experience a little more comfortable and less stressful when nature calls. There are now two toilets dedicated solely for use by the fairer sex (so they don t have to keep putting the seat down). Some of the proceeds from the rally are set aside for improving the experience each year but more importantly a good portion goes towards helping the local community and other worthy charities. If you have any suggestions for future rallies just drop us a line atinfo@motoguzziclubqld.org. So mark the calendar and come along and enjoy yourself at the Ruptured Budgie Rally. The Moto Guzzi Club of Qld invites all motorcyclists to join us for the Ruptured Budgie Rally at Mingoola. Where is Mingoola you ask? It's about 60km west of Tenterfield on the Bruxner Highway. Check out the maps further down the page. If you haven't been before don't be shy. Pack some warm clothes and your tent and get to the Budgie. See you at the bar! firewood onsite Good camping spots by the river, plenty of Fully catered with licensed bar from Friday dinner to Sunday breakfast All the usual rally awards, plus some not so usual ones $25 entry, includes badge Children under 15 years free entry, no badge Please note that this is a motorcycle rally. No cars (except official vehicles) will be allowed through the gate, no exception so please do not ask. Support vehicles are not wanted or appreciated. If you can't carry it on your bike, don't bring it. The rally is fully catered and licensed so no alcohol is to be brought in for two reasons. Firstly is contravenes our liquor license and secondly the bar is how we raise money to donate to various charities. The less you spend at the bar the less the deserving charities get. The food is put on by the local Lions Club and is reasonably priced. Any profits they make are used to benefit the local community.remember, this is a motorcycle rally. Cars are not permitted on site (Official vehicles excepted). No dogs, cats, glass, dickheads or attitudes. 18
