3 President s Report Page 3 Hi fellow Ulyssesians, We have only had one ride since our last meeting due to the mix of Fridays & Sundays in April, so I am looking forward to a week of riding in the hills of Port Macquarie with the Ulysses AGM later in the week. We did have a tenpin bowling night which was a lot of fun followed by a very enjoyable meal at the Gosford Hotel which a few of us used our entertainment book voucher for a free meal! I m looking forward to the next Pins Night. Early this month Gavin and I attended the Hornsby Hornets Ulysses Branch Social meeting which was enjoyable and interesting. They are a very friendly bunch and we invited them to join us on our next which 6 of the Hornets came on our ride to Bob s Farm. Well done to Gavin and Barbs for organising the ride. I will try to arrange a joint ride with the Hornets and also join one of their rides. Their rides are the second and fourth Sundays (the opposite to us). Black Tyres & Black Roads just go together! Garry Johnston definitely knows how to bowl with a score of 138, others rated a mention. Alan Flores with a credible 120 and Garry Fuchs with a 111. Looking forward to the next time. 6 Ride to Valhalla Restaurant at Bob s Farm, May 07, 2017 Page 6 Twenty-six eager members and friends, including six from Hornsby branch, took part in this great day out.we set out from Woy Woy in fine, sunny conditions and enjoyed a smooth ride. Everybody did their bit to keep our group together. The route to Bob s Farm and schedule, for future reference: 9:00am depart Maccas Woy Woy > Brisbane Water Drive to West Gosford > Central Coast Highway through The Entrance to Doyalson > Pacific Highway to Swansea 10:30am arrive Swansea Maccas for pit stop 11:00am depart Swansea Maccas > Pacific Highway through Belmont to Bennetts Green > Newcastle Inner City Bypass through Lambton and Jesmond to Sandgate > Pacific Highway to Hexham Maccas 11:40am arrive Hexham Maccas, pause to regroup 11:45am depart Hexham Maccas > Pacific Highway across Hexham Bridge, through Heatherbrae to Raymond Terrace > Richardson Road past Grahamstown Dam to Salt Ash > Nelson Bay Road to Bob s Farm 12:30pm arrive Valhalla Restaurant for lunch Valhalla s wood fired pizza certainly hit the spot. Well worth another visit. Cruising home via Kooragang, Wallsend, Toronto and Dora Creek rounded out a great circuit with 295km on the clock. 9 Ride to Gunnedah late 1960 s Page 9 had met this girl and she invited me to her house to meet the family. Only problem was that she lived in Gunnedah and I lived in Hurstville. A long weekend was coming up so I said I would come up for the weekend. Now today with good roads and a 135hp Ducati Superbike it would be a breeze. But this was the late sixties and I was well very naive. To this day I don t know what was going through my mind, but before the internet I did not know what the weather would be or the best route. I left work which was at Waverton at 5pm Friday on the October long weekend. I then rode my 100cc Yamaha twin to Parramatta then on to Windsor before riding towards Singleton along the Putty Road. It got dark real quickly and cold and to my surprise about ten o clock outside Singleton I came across a drunk soldier hitchhiking. It was a small bike but I gave him a lift into town. It seems he had a buck s night and his friends thought it would be a good idea to get him drunk and dump him thirty kilometres out of town the night before his wedding. I spent the night at Singleton at a motel. The next morning I woke up to pouring rain and without proper rain gear rode on to my loved one. After about a hundred kilometres in the drenching rain I could take no more and rode up to a farm house. I was greeted by a couple who were both disabled. They invited me in and dried my clothes by the fire and gave me warm food and drink. We talked for a few hours and when the sun came out I venture don my little steed. It was early afternoon when I reached Gunnedah and after meeting the family was told that we were off to a party in the next nearby town, only a hundred klicks. Thank goodness it was in a car. Sunday was relaxing with a large family meal and then on Monday morning I said my good byes and headed south. All went well until I reached Muswellbrook. Sure enough, more rain, so at Singleton I searched out the railroad station and checked my bike and myself to Hurstville by train. My bike was emptied of fuel and placed in the goods shed. I caught the next train to Newcastle, then central then Hurstville. The next day the freight master at Hurstville which was across the tracks from my home rang me and said bring some fuel, your bike is ready for collection. What a great service. I eventually traded that bike for a Honda 250 Scrambler, resigned the job and moved to Canberra and never saw that girl again.
