President s Report Page 3 Hi all members & guests, Another great month of rides. A big well done by Parso, his blue September ride was a great success, with a great ride and a fun night with Parso raising $ Last weekends ride lead by Gavin was through the beau ful upper Hunter on roads that we haven t ridden before finishing for lunch at Lochinvar Hotel. I a ended a presidents gathering organized by the Hills branch, which was very successful and informa ve with a few new great ideas for our branch. Thanks to Narelle & Jeff for organizing the entertainment books, which raised $216 and has also saved myself twice the price of the book already and I s ll have another 7 months le in which to use it. I would like to wish Phil (& Archie) all the best on his move to Port Macquarie to start a new chapter in his life. You will be missed by myself and the other members of the Woy Woy Peninsular Branch. My thoughts and deepest sympathy for Geoff & Family with the sudden loss of his parents. Exploring Australia on Two Wheels, Q #61963 A really big thanks to Mike and the team at Peninsular Office Supplies for printing our Branch Newsletter. 4 Secretary s Report July 2016 All, As the Secretary is off on holidays I thought I would steal some space, newsle er editor s privilege. This is not intended as a eulogy, as Phil is only just moving up the coast (Half his luck) it is just a way of acknowledging Phil's efforts in assis ng the original commi ee in ge ng this wonderful branch club started and the reless efforts since then. I was looking through our old reports and such to find some photos of Phil showing his involvement in everything going. But of course I soon found out that Phil was usually the guy behind the camera and some mes resorted to using Photoshop to get himself into the group photos. Here are some random photos from years past. Peter Kla #63085 Page 4 Call Lois Jones Shop 9 Umina Mall Ocean Beach Rd Umina Beach
Ride Report Mangrove Creek Dam BBQ September 18th Page 5 14 bikes 4 pillions a 1 car set out on a cloudy day that threatened rain, wonder how many people would have come if it was a sunny day? As we got closer to 9 AM departure me it started to sprinkle and a few riders broke out the Rain Gear. Others were heard saying If I have to wear the rain gear I m not coming. We all headed off along Brisbane Water Road towards West Gosford, then along Mans road and on to Ourimbah. More sprinkles but so far so good. Then past the roundabouts back on to the Pacific Highway northwards. We were just enjoying the curves and lush growth as we headed up the hill when the turnoff to Tonkiss rd loomed up too quickly but a punch on the brakes, a wiggle and a le turn saw us s ll on track to bypass the Wes ield Shopping Centre traffic chaos. On to Old Maitland Rd where it started to drizzle more heavily, then a right turn on Yarramalong Road towards Wyong and there was the Wyong Milk Factory and a welcome cuppa. Our club took over a series of tables that had reserved signs on them (living up to the grow old disgracefully mo o?) no, all good, we had about ¾ hr before we had to vacate them. Everyone got fed and watered in me but the rain started to increase and looking at the radar just showed more heavy rain to come. A er some toing and froing the group decided to abandon the BBQ and the ride to Mangrove Creek dam and go home to change and reconvene at our new home (The Woy Woy Roosters Club) for lunch. Personally I had a really hairy ride, I had forgo en I got new tyres on the Friday, I only remembered when I saw the paint s ll fresh on the tyres once I parked at the milk factory. Not a good thing even in dry weather let alone a wet slick day. Everyone got home safely and most went to lunch at the club. A short ride but mostly enjoyable. Peter Kla #63085
Page 6 Parso's Denman Ride for Cancer 2016 September 25, 2016 Under sunny skies 11 bikes and 2 cars le Maccas at our designated me of 10 am, up Woy Woy Rd and jumping on the M1 at Kariong with Dom joining the group as we went under the road. Straight on the M1 where we were joined at Ourimbah by Warwick and Sharon and Grahame Weeks. Max was meant to join us at the Wyong on ramp but snuck into the group in his champagne carrying vehicle as we rode past Freeman's. Other Members were to join us later at our Des na on as they had an earlier charity ride for a good friend that had succumbed to a serious illness. Our lunch stop at Pokolbin came up before we knew it and everyone mingled and cha ed over coffees and milkshakes. We le here at 1pm and con nued up the Hunter past Broke and con nued up Wallaby Scrub Rd where we eventually joined the Golden Hwy up through Jerry's Plains and past some of the World s finest Horse Studs. We arrived at Denman earlier than expected and once again our hosts had a couple of cold complimentary cold beers wai ng in each room. The rest of the a ernoon was spent relaxing and cha ng amongst friends, raffle ckets for "Big Bluey" the Bear were selling like hot cakes but the prospect of a 1 in 50 chance to win a car was too hard to resist. A small group also convinced Krinksy to drive and pick up as well to the two rivers winery where they spent more money. Gav and Andra, Shane and Rhonda and Brad and Kate finally arrived as well as Mark McNamara with a couple of mates in tow. The inevitable happened and we all ended up at the pub for the remainder of the night. Music outside by a great Guitarist entertained and later that evening a terrific band. All enjoyed their meals and had a great me. once again Mark the publican of the Royal Hotel stood up to the plate and bought $500 of raffle ckets for "Big Bluey" taking our tally for the night to $1000. The raffle was drawn later in the evening and was won by Mark the Publican and was kindly donated back which was a great gesture from him. The only formality le was to Auc on Max's Harley wallet and once again John was not going to be beaten, thanks Mate. Well that's it thank you to everyone who par cipated in my weekend again and I hope you all enjoyed the ride. In closing I would like to make an announcement regarding "Big Bluey". Remember this is the official entry into winning the Blue September Nissan Micra. As a thank you to you all for suppor ng my ride I have discussed with Mark Quinlan to draw a raffle at the next mee ng. Everyone who went to Denman will have 1 entry in the raffle and the winner will win "Big Bluey" and have their chance to win the car, so good luck and thank you all for your support. Parso
More Photos From Denman Page 7 Coffee Ride to Jerrys October 02, 2016 Long Weekend A good turn-out, considering the long week-end and our big ride to Denman the previous weekend: Garry & Sue, Mal & Kate, Jim & Monica, Kev & Brenda, Alan, Gil, Lois, Phil, Wayne and yours truly. A smooth run to Jerry's, with the ride leader's speedo needle glued to the speed limit. It was as if the bloke only has one and a half months le on his P plate, and couldn't bear the thought of his licence being suspended on this double demerits weekend. We had a pleasant hour or so cha ng at Jerry's over coffee and nibbles, before the group dispersed to catch up with family or sports. Gav Lill #65483
Page 8 Mystery Ride to the Hunter Valley October 16, 2016 Twenty-seven members and friends arranged on twenty-three bikes departed Woy Woy under blue sky and warm sunshine. We cruised up the freeway with the promise of a great day out. Morning tea at Freeman s for half an hour, then a smooth and scenic run north through Mulbring and Richmond Vale with a brief stop for a head count before entering East Maitland. Thanks to Jimmy for corner marking at Mulbring and Lois at Richmond Vale. Con nuing through Pitnacree and Bolwarra, we joined Maitland Vale Road and rolled along the north bank of the Hunter River through beau ful green countryside. We turned south through Luskintyre to arrive at our lunch venue in Lochinvar at noon. The Works Burger, if not actually the best in the world, comes very close. This ride is new to our programme. I was delighted to hear so many posi ve responses. This ride also gave this new ride leader some serious food for thought. How to coordinate a large group when you can t see the tail end charlie? Riding as a compact group (not straggling), corner marking and keeping sight of the rider behind all help. The quick change traffic light at East Maitland is a lesson I will take into my next ride! 9 Ken's Tour of Upstate New York October 11, 2016 I found a website outlining the 6 best motorcycle tours in Upstate New York. h p:// motorcycle_roads_rides_trips_best_upstate_ny.html Since that area is an hour away from my home I decided to try the one out of Buffalo, down to the Chautauqua Lake and back. It should have been an overnight ride if I added a few stops of interest, but I was enjoying it so much I decided to lengthen it by staying on highway 62 and con nuing south instead of turning back towards Lake Erie at Gowanda. Most of the way was small villages and flat farm land. Stopping in a li le village called North Collins. I had lunch at R.J.'s Cafe. As I walked in there were three people already ea ng. "The Sloppy Joe Special is pre y good today." said one man who looked up from his meal and saw me reading the menu. Thanking him I turned to the proprietress, who had just walked in from the kitchen. "Waddayawant?" she asked with that wonderful Western New York accent. I ordered the Sloppy Joe and sat down. It wasn't memorable, but it was edible and it filled the gap. While I ate, the locals cha ed away with me about where I was from and what I was doing there. All very friendly and Mayberry-ish. Barney Fife could easily have walked in at any minute. On finishing, I got up to leave and the owner shouted, "Whar d'you think yor goin'?" I wasn't sure what was happening and visions of Deliverance began to circulate in my brain. The other diners laughed and one said not to pay any a en on to her, that she does that to everyone. I looked up and she had a broad grin on her face. I thought about giving her a hug but decided not to push my luck. Star ng off again the countryside was a mix of small towns and farm land. The ride was beau ful and relaxing. Then I crossed into Pennsylvania and the scenery began to change to less rural and more wilderness as the road climbed into the Allegheny Na onal Forest. From Warren un l Tionesta you follow the Allegheny River along the western border of the Na onal Forest. There are mountains on one Page 9 side and the river flowing below on the other. It was a beau ful run with gentle curves, beau ful vistas and very li le traffic. This sec on took longer than the 73 kms suggests because there was no reason to hurry and slower speeds allowed a be er view. The sun was shining, the air was filled with forest smells and I was conscious of the big smile on my face. I stopped into the Tionesta Tourist Bureau and found a brochure outlining a number of loops through the mountains for motorcyclists. So I grabbed a room, a burger and sat down to plan the next day's ride. Then that morning I went to the Kiwi Cafe for breakie. The owner is a New Zealand woman who married a local when, as she claimed, she got on the wrong plane. I picked two routes for the next day. The first one was a loop south and east along secondary roads through the mountains. The scenery was amazing with streams, hills, cabins and, of all things, small petro pumps every where. Eventually you turn on to highway 666 (The Devil's Highway) that is a narrow road winding through the forest. It is a great road for motorcycles with lots of curves and no cars. But they cau on you to stay below 60 kms due to wildlife. A good thing too because almost immediately a large deer came bounding up from the creek and crossed the road metres away from me. Further along a hawk took up point in front of me for about 50 metres and then I came around a corner and there was a doe and two fawns on the road. I stopped and we stared at each other for about a minute un l I reached for my camera. Just as I turned it on they disappeared into the bush. Returning to Tionesta was much the same, just a perfect morning. But a large storm with a tornado, had gone through Chicago the night before and was heading my way so that spelled the end of the ride and I rode straight home instead of the extra days planned doing other loops in the brochure. Next year I hope to go back. Ken Douglas Photos Next Month KINCUMBER MITRE 1O Cnr Empire Bay Drive & Kerta Rd Kincumber NSW 2251 Phone:
