2 WELCOME On behalf of the Board of Governors of the Australian Meals on Wheels Association, I cordially invite everyone involved in the provision of Meals on Wheels across Australia to the 2017 National Conference. Our theme this year is Volunteers Delivering More Than Just A Meal, and the conference will be held at the Marriott Resort Surfers Paradise on the Gold Coast from 13 to 15 September. The organising committee has worked hard to secure a range of speakers that will be of interest to service staff, volunteers, management committees and board members. Our inspirational speaker this year will be Paul Hockey who managed to scale Mount Everest despite incredible personal odds. Our international keynote speaker will be Susan Waldman, Chief Marketing and Communications Officer from Meals on Wheels America. It will also be the first time we have joined together since the release of the National Meal Guidelines (a focus of this year s program). The past two years have seen unprecedented changes to the sector in terms of My Aged Care and the Commonwealth Home Support Program. Despite these challenges, and environmental disasters like the cyclones and floods in Queensland and New South Wales, Meals on Wheels carries on. This year s conference will showcase our diversity and strength and help create a sustainable future for all our services. I look forward to meeting and talking to many of you there. GOLD COAST, QUEENSLAND The Gold Coast has developed into a diverse, cosmopolitan, forward-thinking city with a future full of promise. Situated in the south east corner of Queensland, the Gold Coast stretches along 57km of coastline and is home to over half a million people. Beyond the city s beautiful beaches are vast, sub-tropical rainforests with breathtaking scenery. Match this with a favourable climate, endless attractions, nightlife, dining, friendly people all in a safe environment and you have Australia s favourite destination. The Gold Coast is a perfect destination to hold the 2017 AMOWA Conference, providing delegates a wonderful opportunity to mix business with pleasure. 2

3 CONFERENCE HIGHLIGHTS Workshops As in previous years, there will be a choice of four informative and constructive workshops for delegates to attend. This provides delegates the opportunity to choose 2 topic options that best suit their requirements. You do not need to pre-book for these workshops; it will be based on first in until workshops are full. Welcome Reception Attendance to the Welcome Reception is included in your Registration ticket. This will be from 5.30pm to 7.00pm Wednesday 13 September. Immediately after the finish of the day s session you will be directed to the welcome function activities. This event will provide a great opportunity to network with your colleagues and mix with exhibitors. Dress is smart casual. Conference Dinner The Conference Dinner will be held at the renowned Seaworld and transport from the Marriott Resort is included in the ticket price. The dinner is optional and an additional charge. Seats will be limited, so to ensure your place, please book your dinner ticket on the registration form or via the online link. Trade Exhibition There will be an extensive Exhibition as part of the Conference with up to 30 trade exhibitors. This year there are some exciting additions as part of the Trade area which will provide many opportunities to interact with Exhibitors. The Exhibitors would appreciate your support, so please ensure you take the time to meet with each of them and learn how they can assist your service. SPEAKER HIGHLIGHTS IAN COUSINS Conference MC Ian until recently was the General Manager Sales Gold Coast Media Centre for 90.9 Sea FM, 92.5 Gold FM and Southern Cross 10 television. He now has his own business, Cousins Communications, specialising in corporate MC work and consultancy. He is a Commonwealth Civil Celebrant and Justice of the Peace (Qual) Qld. Born in Rockhampton, Ian came to the Gold Coast in 1971, working at the original 4GG until 1985 as Assistant General Manager. In 1986 he was appointed General Manager of Radio 97 (formerly 2MW) at Tweed Heads. During his time on the Gold Coast, Ian has served on the board of the Gold Coast Tourism Bureau, the South Coast Fire Brigade as a government-appointed member, the Gold Coast liaison committee for the Commonwealth Games, three years as president of the Gold Coast Media Club, chairman of the Gold Coast Community Fund (currently vice chairman), chairman of the Super GP EAC (events advisory committee), board member of the Gold Coast Eisteddfod, member of the steering committee for Griffith University s new $37 million business school, and 20 years as president of the Gold Coast Business Excellence Awards. PAUL HOCKEY Inspirational Speaker One man. One arm. His story. Paul Hockey, AKA The One-Armed Boxer, holds three black belts in Martial Arts and is the first person in the world with a disability to climb the treacherous north side of Mount Everest. He spent three years teaching English in Japan and 12 years as a Japanese speaking tour guide. Paul delivers his powerful presentation A handful of spirit and throughout it describes what he has done, why he has done it and how. He talks about impossible only being opinion, and never fact, and how it is attitude and not aptitude that ultimately determines our altitude. Captivating, inspirational, motivating, unbelievable, entertaining and at times hilarious, like no one else, Paul Hockey s impact on his audience is remembered forever. Seven words: Never give up... never, ever give up! 3

4 SPEAKER HIGHLIGHTS MATT GOLINSKI Professional Chef Matt Golinski is a highly regarded professional chef with a passion for creating cuisine using fresh, seasonal and local ingredients. Well-known as one of the original team members of the popular Ready Steady Cook television series, Matt has worked as executive chef at some of Queensland s leading restaurants and founded his own catering company. Based on Queensland s Sunshine Coast, Matt now enjoys working as a consulting chef to restaurants, being a regular guest chef at festivals and events and writing his popular food columns and blog. He is also an active member of the slow food movement and a motivational speaker. Since 2015 Matt has been helping the Gympie region promote itself as a world-class food destination in his role as Food and Culinary Tourism Ambassador. He uses his knowledge of the area and its producers to showcase the region through cooking demonstrations and his blog Matt Eats Gympie. He is also a keen runner and in August 2015 completed his first full-length marathon. SUSAN WALDMAN Chief Marketing and Communications Officer, Meals on Wheels America Susan joined Meals on Wheels America in June She brings extensive experience to the Association in marketing and branding for both major corporations and national non-profit organisations. Previously, Susan served as co-founder and director of strategic services for FORGE Branding, where her clients included the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids, the National Audubon Society and the Corporation for Public Broadcasting. Susan also served as the branding columnist for the Washington Post, and founder and president of SLW Strategic Services, serving clients that included Discovery Networks, CapitalOne, Department of Homeland Security and Verizon. Susan graduated with a B.A. in marketing from Michigan State University. She also served as a senior fellow for the University of Maryland s James MacGregor Burns Academy of Leadership and is certified in the implementation of the Barrett Values Centre Cultural Assessment Tools. 7 REGISTRATION FEES & ENTITLEMENTS Registration Details Registrations can only be made through the Conference Secretariat. You can register on the AMOWA website: Use either the online register link OR download the Registration Form and complete using black ink and return by to DCI at Please note a separate form must be completed for each delegate. Registrations received on or before the 30 June 2017 will be eligible to receive the Early Bird Discount rate. Registrations received from 1 July 2017 will be at the full Registration rate. Registration and Payments Registrations can only be made through the Conference Secretariat. Please register using the Conference Registration Form or via the online link found on the AMOWA website. Please complete clearly and back to DCI. Cancellation Policy All cancellations of attendance must be advised in writing to the Conference Secretariat. A full refund (less a cancellation fee of $100) may be made on cancellations received by the Conference Secretariat on or before 28 August No refund will be made after 29 August Substitutions will be accepted until 1 September Accommodation cancellation fees will apply and the Conference Secretariat will advise of this charge at the time of cancellation. Privacy Act When you complete your Registration for the 2017 AMOWA Conference, your details will be recorded on a data base which will be used for Conference administration purposes only, such as registration and accommodation details as well as any associated Conference activities. Insurance Registration fees do not include insurance of any kind. It is strongly recommended that delegates take out their own travel and medical insurance prior to attending the Conference. The policy should include loss of fees/deposit through cancellation of your participation, medical expenses, loss or damage to personal property and any other additional expenses. The Conference Secretariat will not take any responsibility for any participant failing to insure. The Conference Secretariat offers a competitive rate for all travel insurance so contact them to discuss your needs. Information provided during your Registration may be made available on request to sponsors of the Conference. If you do not wish your details passed on to sponsors, please indicate this to the Secretariat. If you include details of any other person in your registration, we encourage you to inform them of the above. Photographs taken during the conference and associated activities may be used for marketing purposes.
