Confirmed 2018 Conference accommodation has been booked for those who requested him to do so. $500 was send to Rotary Club of George Town to assist in a Safe Water Project. Gave a cheque to Paul Bousfield who is the Chair of Police Legacy for $3,500. This was the money raised from the raffles, and other savings from the State Crime Command Awards night. Police Legacy helps support the families of Police Officers who have passed away. Paul said that the Police from SCC and Police Legacy appreciate everything we do for them through the Awards night and our donations. AG Warwick Richardson talked to us about his family s involvement with Police Legacy. Community Service: Pat Gerardis Dream Cricket: had already mentioned this at our information evening, for those that were not there, thanks again for your contribution, it is because of our members giving their time on the day and donations towards the purchase of medals, that Dream cricket was a resounding success and I hope that it will be continued. On Friday the 9th of June, We will be supplying a meal for the children and families at Ronald McDonald house as we do each year, it will be an Italian food night, we will have more details in the coming weeks. Also in June, The collection of unsold Bowel Care kits and money to be returned. And finally, Congratulations to Sarah Large on her exam results. Foundation / International: Audrey Williams $500 to RC George Town for Safe Water Project Fund Raising: Rod O Donoughue Thanks to those who helped out at Bunnings barbecue. Takings $724, Expenses $170 = Profit $554 There will be some barbecues for Cumberland Council Rob and Rod met with Administration at Cumberland Council Red Shield Appeal is on the last weekend in May every year. Saturday 27 th will be okay but Sunday 28 th is booked for a barbecue Rod suggested that we have a Red Shield table and collector next to barbecue to accept donations. 3 Guest Speaker Introduced by: Irene Little James Warrand talked about the Bombing of Darwin on 19/02/1942. There were two raids the first at 09:58am and the second at 11:58am. James is a volunteer at the Australian National Maritime Museum in Sydney it is the second best maritime museum in the world after Greenwich. Darwin pre-war isolated and remote with a population of 5,000 people. By time or air raids there were over 10,000 service personnel. We only had a few planes operational in Darwin while Japan sent 81 Kate Bombers, 36 Zero Fighters on the raids. Talked about the damage done to the ships in Darwin Harbour (showed pictures). The USS Peary was bombed (WW1 style destroyer) and lost 83 sailors. It s gun is now in a park in Darwin. Approximately 7 ships and most of our planes were destroyed. There were 235 dead, wounded, 30 aircraft destroyed. The only wharf capable of handling sea going ships was also destroyed. 20 subs and ships survived, oil tanks only slightly damaged, railway undamaged, airfield 50kms away was not attacked. There were 62 further raids on Darwin but none were as heavy as the first on 19/02/1942. The last raid was on 12/11/1943. More bombs fell on Darwin than on Pearl Harbour. Our loss 235 Pearl Harbour loss 2,450. Sofia thanked James for his talk. General Business Narelle Wilson In January some people are going to Cambodia and would like any and all donations of pens to take with them. Please give spare pens to Narelle. The teachers over in Cambodia have to buy pens for themselves and their classes and they are quite expensive so all donations will be gratefully received.
