1 Rotary Club of Mordialloc Inc. Reg No A G PO Box 289, Mentone Vic Website: Club meets at Mordialloc Sporting Club 528 Main Road Mordialloc (Cnr. Epsom Rd) Tuesday 6.00 pm for 6.30 pm Meeting June 2013 THIS WEEK S MEETING Office Bearers Charli-Kate Worgan World Dwarf Games Bob Travers Damian West, Cliff Riley Len Dawson, Barry Donaldson Paul Taranto Carol Quayle President: Glenyse Guinan Secretary: Brian Schauer Treasurer: Malcolm Finlayson District Governor: Brian Martin Assistant Governor: Peter Murie Message from President Glenyse Guinan The District Changeover Dinner was held last Saturday evening at Kingston Links Golf Club. As well as the official change of District Governors, the occasion recognises club achievements from Rotary International and District Len Dawson quipped that this was the equivalent to Rotary Oscars and the Rotary Club of Mordialloc had a very successful night. A different system is in place this year, with a number of clubs able to receive awards if they have quantifiable achievement in specified areas. The first award we obtained was a Rotary International Presidential Citation for Actively Working to Achieve Peace Through Service, the theme for the year for Rotary International. The award acknowledges overall excellence for the breadth of work accomplished to this end. Well done to all club members for without your dedication the achievement would not have been possible. This was a whole club effort involving most members with special thanks to the Gnome Committee led by Len Dawson, Jack Cooper, Carol Quayle and Jeff Needham. Individually, Kay Gordon was recognised for her wonderful effort over many years as GSE district chairman and Brian Foley for his dedication as District webmaster. Overall it was a very exciting evening. Congratulations to club members once more for all of your efforts this year that made these achievements possible. I am really looking forward to catching up with as many as possible to celebrate at the Changeover Dinner at Woodlands Golf Club next week. This week our guest speaker is Charli-Kate Worgan who will speak on the World Dwarf Games. Glenyse At District level we were awarded recognition for PR and Communications. This was largely due to the work by Brian Foley with the upgrade of our website, the bulletin and for all of the publicity we received in the press and locally leading up to the Gnome festival. Thanks to all those who helped with the publicity in particular Len Dawson and Evan Johnson. The District also recognised the club in the award Club Projects (Community), for the club project the Gnome Festival. Len Dawson added that, in relation to the Cheltenham East Wheelathon, additional private donations totalling $150 were received apart from the $1600 raised by the students. Jack Cooper reminded that any members wishing to attend the 2014 RI Convention should register their interest so early accommodation booking can be made. In relation to the changeover dinner, Brian Foley is after any photographs of club events during the past year for the picture presentation and Paul Taranto seeks donation of raffle prizes. Sergeant-at-Arms For once, Sergeant Jack Cooper had no latecomers so Cliff was fined for being early (It seems you can t win mate). Tim was then noticed sneaking in very late just in time for the quiz! Footy winners were fined. Jack conducted his regular and popular quiz. Len Dawson is due to be a grandfather again and knows that it will be a boy he has seen the video! Guest Speaker John Walsh The Bridge of Hope Foundation John Walsh was introduced by Chairman David Brunt who had met him during his time working in the prison system. David described John as a prison reformer intent on improving the situation for prisoners. John then described how he established the Bridge of Hope Foundation as a response to the many bad things that he saw and experienced during his time when he served 6½ years in Barwon Prison, plus six months on supervised home detention, for a business deal that went wrong and a trial process that he claimed had been corrupted. His experience in prison showed that in many ways the prison system failed prisoners. He described many prisoners as damaged people before they were imprisoned and prison damaged them further. Many prisoners, both young and old, are illiterate. As a result he became involved helping prisoners by reading letters to them that had come from family members including partners and children. He saw the positive benefits on them by knowing their family news. John believes that the justice system does little to rehabilitate prisoners and bandaids the real problems. The Bridge of Hope was established initially to assist other organisations, mainly church based, working in the prisons although these groups did not always work together. The Foundation is now working to assist prisoners more directly with some emphasis on youth. The Parole Board sets parameters for prisoners released on probation and this includes doing some form of education courses. One very positive program is Learner to Probation aimed at assisting young prisoners at the Malmsbury Prison obtain a drivers licence. Continued P 3 Rotary Club of Mordialloc Bulletin 18/06/2013 Page 2

3 Guest speaker (cont) Rotary clubs on the Kyneton area are assisting young prisoners to gain the 120 hours driving experience necessary for a licence. Apart from obtaining a licence to drive a motor car, qualification to operate a forklift is necessary for many to obtain proper employment. A number of organisations including Bendigo TAFE, Woolworths, Bunnings and others are involved and would provide jobs if the trainees become licensed to drive, especially a forklift. John them responded to a number of questions from the floor covering areas such as the Parole Board, prison officer behaviour and attitudes and the justice system generally. On a positive note, John said that he is often approached by prisoners who he first met in prison for counselling and that his good relations dated back to the period he helped them with reading. Photographs from District 9810 Changeover Dinner Glenyse (right) with other Presidential Citation Presidents Bob Travers proposed the thanks. Other announcements APOLOGIES FOR NON-ATTENDANCE Apologies for absences from the weekly meeting should be directed to Len Dawson on by noon on the day of the meeting Wheel Chairs for Kids Please remember to put $2 in the box on each table each week to go to the Wheel Chairs for Kids program.
