1 Serving the Community since 1985 In Gear R O T A R Y C L U B O F B E A U M A R I S W E E K L Y B U L L E T I N Number October 2017 Presidents Report Our Progressive Dinner Fellowship event was a great success. Forty six members, partners and friends enjoyed a great selection of food and wines at four different venues. Thanks to everybody for their efforts and making the evening so enjoyable. I have just got back from helping out on the Sandringham Rotary stand at the Sandringham Village Festival. If you have not been to the Festival, the centre of the village is blocked off and filled with stalls from community organisations, societies, charities, local vendors and of course events and rides for children. The RFDS simulator and climbing wall seemed to be particularly popular. The mix would be a good model for the Concourse Festival. On Tuesday 24 th October I attended Sandringham Rotary s meeting to hear Rotarian Action Group Against Slavery representatives speaking. If members would like to know more about the issue of Modern Slavery let me or Lynda know, and we will arrange for a RAGAS speaker in the new year. A final reminder that Hampton and Sandringham Rotary Clubs are hosting a pre-release of Murder on The Orient Express on Wednesday 8th November at the Palace Dendy Cinema, Church St Brighton. The cost is $25 a head including a glass of red or white wine with proceeds from the evening going to End Polio Now. We will be having our meeting at VGC on Thursday 9 th November as normal. We have Shia Smart the District Governor Elect Nominee (DG in David Hone s year as President) visiting us on Thursday and Lorraine Nicholas our AG visiting on 9 th November. Don t forget we have DG Malcolm Chiverton and his wife Karen visiting on 30 th November. On Tuesday 5 th December, we are having a joint meeting with Hampton Rotary at Milanos at Brighton Beach. Our speaker will be Niki Efstratiou from Bayside Council who will share the results of the Council s Youth Resilience Survey I hope that some members from Sandringham will also join us. We will be back at VGC on Thursday 14th December for our Christmas Dinner, and yes it will feature a Kris Kringle. This will be the final meeting for We will start 2018 with a Nine and Dine on Wednesday 17 th January at Woodlands Golf Club; details to follow. 2 We are back at VGC this Thursday for our AGM, followed by Bryce Gardiner talking about the development of the Beaumaris Sports Club. Those of you who have helped out at the Day on Oak Street event will know something about the club s development. Finally, Beaumaris Rotary Club Anniversaries this week: Robert McArthur: - 3 November 2005 Clem Quick: - 29 th October 2015 (but Rotarian for 47years) Yours in Rotary Chris 237 Bay Road, Cheltenham VIC Page 2
3 Fellowship News Last Thursday 26th October, 46 Beaumaris Rotarians and friends enjoyed dinner and drinks at four surprise venues safely delivered by bus diver Devesh to each of these locations. Our first stop was for French sparkling and amazing appetisers at the home of Chris and Heather D Arcy in Sandringham. Fellowship and chatter did not stop during our one hour visit there. Major prize at this event, Ice bucket on stand with champagne and 6 glasses was won by Clem and June Quick. Our second stop was at The Soup Kitchen of Ken and Shirley Mirams in Sandringham. Three delicious styles of soups with toast fingers plus wines. Wines in flashing LED wine glasses made for a colourful effect while once again the conversations did not stop. Major prize at this home was won by Peter Flude. Third stop for our main meal was at the home of Malcolm and Louise Sawle in Beaumaris. Amazing pulled pork and coleslaw and once again liquid refreshments. Six prizes were distributed here. Our final destination was to the home of Jim and Judy O Brien in Beaumaris for a massive range of desserts, coffee & tea, port and stickies. Major prize of Estée Lauder Perfume and makeup was won by Sue McArthur. Watching members walk home in the dark with their flashing wine glasses was quite a sight. I would like to thank all four families for opening their homes and supplying such an amazing four course meal. Rotarians are known for their generosity, but this was a pretty big ask to wine, dine and have 46 people in their home. The success of our Rotary Club is due to the generosity of members and partners like these who are happy to step up to occasions like this. Many thanks to all who attended this fellowship event. Especially new prospective members, Ken and Val McLennan, Rick van Dyk and Rochelle Park. Also, Margaret, friend of Bob, Sue and Roy. Cheers. Megan Page 3
4 We have lots of excellent photos of the night available on our Beaumaris Rotary private photo archive. The ones chosen here are just some of the group shots so the Editor does not risk offending anyone by including (or excluding) any particular photo. Contact the Editor if you cannot remember how to access these photos. Page 4

7 On-to-Conference Update Louise and I visited Bendigo last week to check out the location and accommodation for the District Conference next March. We stayed one night ay a motel where we had made a provisional booking as it was close to the venue and came with a very high Trip Advisor rating. However, we were very disappointed as it turned out to be a very plain motel with no group facilities and quite expensive ($180 per night). After looking for better alternatives we found the Schaller Studio a 100plus room hotel built in the grounds of the Bendigo Hospital and slightly closer to the conference venue. The rooms, though small, are fully equipped with cutlery, crockery, a microwave and a coffee-making machine. But more interestingly the hotel is an Art Hotel and has a multitude of original artworks throughout the hotel rooms and lobby. Also, it has an allday café and evening bar with a happy hour from 5 to 7pm. We have negotiated a group rate of $130 a standard room ($150 twin) with a discounted rate of $10 for a continental buffet breakfast in the coffee bar. As of last Thursday night, 20 members and partners have said they will be coming to conference with another 9 as maybes. However, I have still to hear from the 15 members not present at the meeting. I will be making a provisional booking in the coming week and would appreciate your advice of your intention to attend or not the conference. (At this stage it is not a financial commitment but a statement of intent). Whilst in Bendigo we checked out venues for the Friday night club dinner and have located a pub, close to the hotel, that comes with a good reputation which we can vouch for having eaten there. The dining area can accommodate a group of 30plus comfortably and the chef was most welcoming and very willing to offer a fixed price group menu drinks at bar prices. We also checked out local golf courses should we get enough interest for a pre-conference golf day on the Thursday preceding conference. Of these Belvoir Park is the most favoured as Thursday is not a competition day and therefore suitable for social golfers. Please let me know if you are interested in playing (even if you are not attending the conference). Finally, congratulations to Lois who has already registered for conference. I would encourage you all to follow her lead. And remember that there is now some flexibility in the pricing arrangements. Please let me know when you have registered.
