1 Serving the Community since 1985 In Gear R O T A R Y C L U B O F B E A U M A R I S W E E K L Y B U L L E T I N Number 19, 2 November 2015 Presidents Report A wonderful meeting again on Thursday night, we were privileged to be able to welcome Clem Quick, a Rotarian of many years into Beaumaris Rotary, we will benefit from his experience and knowledge. We are also pleased to be able to welcome his wife June to be part of our Club. Our speaker this week, Ron Iddles was of course fantastic! Plain, direct and to the point. His commitment and that of his fellow Police is outstanding. We heard about some of the most high profile cases we all remembered and for every one of them there is no doubt about the dedication which the Police have shown to get a result. We send our Police to do the hardest jobs imaginable and we can only give them our respect and thanks. Thanks Ron, it was a memorable time to have you speak to us. Greg Every, programme man has again (with Greg Penaluna s help) managed to source a fabulous speaker. It was great also to have Jill Weeks who is the District Speaker consultant and the source of many of our speakers, attend, along with her husband Owen. As a Partners Night, we were able to welcome many partners, thank you for coming and thank you for your enduring commitment. As Chris noted we made a significant contribution to Beaumaris fete through our preserves experts, Heather and Kerrie, thank you both. Thanks also to all the members who went to support the school; we made the effort thank you. Yours in Rotary Trish Beaumaris Theatre Night Thursday 12 November 2015 As advised at recent meetings and also by , our annual visit to the Beaumaris Theatre Company is on Thursday 12 November, doors open 7:30 for a start of 8:00pm, to see a performance of Fawlty Towers. The good news is that the bookings have already started to flood in. The bad news is that anyone who wants to come along but has not yet booked, should Malcolm Sawle (mpsawle@gmail.com) ASAP as there is a possibility that we may have to put up the House Full signs. This year it is essentially a fellowship event only and so the cost has come down from last year to $25 per head. Cash or bank transfer is acceptable, but either is required to confirm your booking. As before it will be cabaret style seating, with patrons bringing their own nibbles, drinks and glasses. Hi folks, Those of you who have a fond spot for the 70's may be interested to know MLOC (Phoenix theatre in Elwood) have a production of 'Jesus Christ Superstar' running 6th - 20th November, with the added interest that Penny is making her stage debut as part of the ensemble! Concourse Christmas Carnival For the last few years our club has worked with the Concourse Traders Association to hold the Concourse Christmas Carnival.

The event will have something for all the family with fun rides, food and refreshments, Santa Claus, external stalls and entertainment featuring Havana Brown along with some local bands.

Volunteers will be needed to help with car parking on the Beaumaris Primary School oval, selling tickets for the rides, helping to sell tickets for the raffle, hosting the Rotary marque amongst other

3 Concourse Christmas Carnival For the last few years our club has worked with the Concourse Traders Association to hold the Concourse Christmas Carnival. This year the Carnival will be held on Saturday 28th November between 2pm and 9pm. I would like to take this opportunity to seek some Rotary volunteers to help on the day. I am suggesting we split the day into two shifts (1-5pm and 5-9pm) to share the load. Please could you let me know (if you haven't already signed up) to which shift you might be able to volunteer. Thanks for your help, Richard Shermon. Hello everyone The annual Masters is soon with us again, this time at Huntingdale, on November, which is the week after our Farmers Market. Although the Market has been going really well, there is some doubt about whether the site will be available to us on an ongoing basis, as the Education Dept. intends to close the school after this year, and demolish the buildings. What happens after that, and whether we will still have access is up in the air. Therefore we do not want to abandon any of our other fundraising activities, and the Masters parking has always been a solid fundraiser for us. This year, Huntingdale Rotary is looking for us to provide three people on Wednesday, 10 per day Thursday through Sunday for parking, and four people Thursday through Sunday for ticketing. If we can achieve this, we will earn over $5000 for the Club. Please check your calendars, talk to your spouses/partners or anyone else crazy enough to want to volunteer, and give me an indication as soon as you can on availability for this important activity. For those newer Members of our Club, the Masters Golf parking/ticketing involves four days of very early mornings, standing in heat, wind, rain, wind, dust, and sometimes all of the above on the same day, managing the public carparks or scanning the entry tickets. The day usually ends around 4pm but can be later. If it is quiet and you are lucky, you may even get to see some golf. We usually manage to make it a fun time, if somewhat gruelling, and it has become a traditional annual fundraising activity for our club. I look forward to an overwhelming response. 4 This Week s Speaker; Ron Iddles Topic; Homicide Investigation Ron Iddles grew up on a dairy farm in Rochester 30 kilometres south of Echuca. As a teenager he milked 120 cows before breakfast and then cycled 8 km to the bus stop to go to school. He has a twin brother, Barry, and a sister Nancye. lieved he treated them fairly. Ron believes that treating suspects with some dignity is crucial to solving many crimes. When he believed that police policy might lead to him being rotated out of the homicide division that had been his focus for most of his career he applied for, and was appointed to, the position of head of the Victorian Police Association. Ron spoke with great passion and authority about both his approach to homicide investigation and his strong belief in the need for more community engagement to reduce violent crime. Ron s talk was peppered with anecdotes about various cases he had investigated to illustrate his key messages, which were; Investigation; Ron joined the police force in 1972 straight out of school determined to one day be a homicide investigator. Soon after arriving in Melbourne he met his wife to be, Colleen. They have recently celebrated their 40 th wedding anniversary with their three children. Colleen is a mental health nurse. Very early on in his police career Ron distinguished himself for his ability to solve crimes and after about five years he achieved his ambition. His dedication and leadership soon proved him to be a homicide investigator from the top draw. In 1989 Ron needed a break and left the police force to run his own trucking business, moving potting mixture and furniture around Victoria. However, in 1994 he was asked to consider returning and believed that he could still make a difference. Although he had to start again as a constable within three years he was back to his former rank and leading his own team. Over his career Ron was involved in about 300 homicide cases. Of these 150 went to court with only three acquittals. Arguably this is more than any other homicide officer in the country. Throughout his career Ron earnt the respect of the victims families for his humanity and compassion as well as those the criminals he put away who be- Page 4

It had rained all morning, and just before reaching this spot the sun had broken through the clouds, highlighting not only the vibrant green of the grass but also creating a mist between the top of the mountains that gives a mystical appearance to this photo.
