1 Serving the Community since 1985 In Gear R O T A R Y C L U B O F B E A U M A R I S W E E K L Y B U L L E T I N Number 38, 11 April 2016 Presidents Report I was rereading my Conference notes this week and noting that Ian Risely had said that we must never change our ethical standards. How true! We can change, and often need to change, but some aspects of Rotary need to stay the same; our ethical standards, our fellowship and our commitment to community. Our commitment to community was well to the fore this week, with the Farmers Market this Saturday. Over 20 members helped at the market, honorary members David Greenall and Brian Kimpton were there too continuing their involvement. The market creates community and it gives a tremendous basis for our work, both locally and internationally. It was also wonderful to see that even without Ken, Malcolm and Chris that there s enough knowledge and continuity for us to setup and open the market. As always Heather is a lynchpin, thanks to all who helped on Saturday. We were able to raffle a Golf Bag, thanks to Heather s friends and Drummond s Golf who originally donated it. Pleasingly it was one by someone well known to us who spent $50 on tickets. Peter Flude tells me that he is in fruitful negotiations with the Education Department at the highest level regarding our continuing occupation of the site. Letter from French Exchange Student Louise The following letter and photos were received in an email from Louise Pierres last week. Louise was hosted by Beaumaris Rotary in 2010.

I have done a lot since I left Australia. I was back then just seventeen, the year that follow I had my baccalaureate (or high school diploma), then I went to live in Nantes to study art history.

Also I am now a lucky aunt and godmother of the beautiful son of my brother François. He lives now with his wife and son in Corsica, a very warm French island.

3 Letter from French Exchange Student Louise The following letter and photos were received in an from Louise Pierres last week. Louise was hosted by Beaumaris Rotary in Hello from France It s been now 6 years since I came to Australia, July 1st It was a wonderful year for me, with so many encounter that I will never forget. I have done a lot since I left Australia. I was back then just seventeen, the year that follow I had my baccalaureate (or high school diploma), then I went to live in Nantes to study art history. I am now finishing my licence of archaeology. And next year I hope starting a master in Toulouse (In the beautiful region of Dordogne that everybody use to tell me about it). Also I am now a lucky aunt and godmother of the beautiful son of my brother François. He lives now with his wife and son in Corsica, a very warm French island. Alexis is now a doctor and lives near Marseille. And my other brother Emilien and his wife are very happy in Lyon, where their always going skying. My mom and dad are now very happy grand-parents and are still living in the small town of La Flèche, nearly retired then new hobby is sailing. So this is me, I know it has been a long time since I talk to you, but I want you to know that I thing often of this experience, it feel like it was only last year since I left. I want to thank you again for the opportunity that you gave me. (Even if my English is becoming terrible). I try to work beside school, and in the summer, because I really want to come back in Australia to see you all. Page 3

4 Speaker: Holly Lindsay Topic: Transparency International Holly Lindsay is a Director of Transparency International Australia. She runs her own company, Integrity Matters established in 2010 providing advice to organisations regarding sustainability strategy, economic policy, business ethics, country risk, strategic planning and governance. Her academic background includes a master's degree in economics (Queen's University, Canada) and a senior executive MBA (Melbourne Business School, University of Melbourne). Holly has in-depth experience in the mining and oil and gas sectors, banking and government sectors, including over 15 years in extractive industries. Prior to founding Integrity Matters in 2010, Holly held a number of senior corporate positions at BHP Billiton ( ), where she was responsible for designing and rolling out the company s global business ethics program, developing its climate change policy, and monitoring and assessing macroeconomic and sovereign risk issues. In 2012 Holly ran CSR Asia s Singapore Office and led projects for clients such as Fuji Xerox, ACCOR, AVIVA Insurance, SABIC and City Developments Limited. Holly has also held senior roles at the Reserve Bank of Australia (in Sydney, Australia), the Canadian Federal Government s Department of Finance (Ottawa, Canada) and the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce (Toronto, Canada). She is a Graduate Member of the Australian Institute of Company Directors. Holly is a governor of WWF-Australia and actively supports Transparency International and Oxfam-Australia. Transparency International Australia is the national chapter of Transparency International (TI), the global coalition against corruption, with a presence in over 100 countries. TI s Vision, Objectives and Guiding Principles and Mission and Strategy is as the only international non-governmental organisation focusing exclusively on the issue of corruption. TI believes that corruption is one of the greatest challenges of the contemporary world. Former TI Australia Chairman Henry Bosch describes the damage it causes and some of the current initiatives being taken to tackle it in his authoritative paper The Growing Threat of International Corruption. Since TI s launch in 1993, corruption has become a global issue and the World Bank among others has credited TI s key role in achieving this. TI Australia was launched in March 1995 to raise awareness of international business corruption in Australia and to initiate moves to combat it. See TI Australia Constitution. Among its organisation members are ANZ Bank, BHP Billiton and Westpac, three of Australia s largest companies, as well as World Vision Australia and others from the development sector. Support has come from other companies with international business interests, the accounting, legal and engineering professions, the academic community, enforcement agencies, political leaders, and non-governmental organisations. Holly s talk covered amongst other topics; The role of TI in spotlighting government corruption The Panama papers The Lux Leaks scandal (via a short video) Australia s slipping ranking in the annual Corruption Perception Index publication. For the information of readers I have reproduced the latest table of the Corruption Perception Index for the last four years covering the top 26 and the bottom seven countries.
