1 Serving the Community since 1985 In Gear R O T A R Y C L U B O F B E A U M A R I S W E E K L Y B U L L E T I N Number February 2018 Presidents Report On Thursday evening we moved back into the Rotunda at VGC. The long table layout means that the staff don t need to swap tables with the main dining room when we use the space. I thought it worked well and will be OK for our typical attendance which is about 35 / 36 people. If we have larger numbers we will probably need to move into the main room. I hope everybody enjoyed the new look meal and Aidan Coleman s presentation about the Australian Dairy Industry. Our next Farmers Market is on Saturday 10th March. At the market we will be raffling two cycle helmets that have been turned into artworks by Amunda Gorey an indigenous artist from Bond Springs in the NT. Raffle tickets will be on sale at our meeting on 8th March so if you won t be at the market make sure you buy your tickets at the meeting. The helmets have been donated by Shirley & Ken Mirams so all proceeds from the raffle will go to Rotary s Trachoma 2020 appeal. The Trachoma Dog had another outing to an event during the week and raised another $100. We will be helping out at the Beaumaris North Primary School s fete on 24th March. This is the school where we hold our farmers market so it is important that that we support them. So whether you are working on our stall or not please come along and give your support. During the week I received a letter from Kerry Stratford the fundraising officer at Sandringham Hospital thanking the club for its continued support. The hospital is holding a fundraising lunch on Thursday 15th March at Sandringham Yacht Club. Tickets are $125 for a two course lunch and beverages. The speaker is Sally Browne, a fashion designer, inspiration speaker and philanthropist. 2 interested in attending you can book through trybooking. The reference is outfits we will be wearing at the Gala Dinner.you certainly won t miss us. Look out for the photos when we get back. Finally, I would like to say a word about the Rotary Foundation and District 9810 s Centurion Club. If you are a member and your membership is due for renewal please follow up and renew. If you are not a member, please become one. It really is quite painless and it would be a terrible shame to think that someone somewhere did not get the help they needed because filling out a short form was too hard. The sign up form is available at: operations.9810rotary.org.au/ files/2011/12/ centurion-contributn- DDagreemt-Master-Form pdf Enjoy your week. Yours in Rotary Chris There is no meeting at VGC this week as a good number of us are off to the District 9810 Conference in Bendigo. I have now seen the 237 Bay Road, Cheltenham VIC Page 2
3 This Week s Speaker: Aidan Coleman Topic: Australian Dairy Sector The Global Dairy Landscape Milk Production In Oceania Aiden Coleman was CEO of Bega Cheese Ltd from 2011 to He had a long and influential career in dairy throughout the Pacific Rim, with senior management roles at Fonterra Brands Australia and Bonland Dairies Australia as well as at Tatua Dairy Co-op in New Zealand. Before that, Aidan earned Bachelor degrees in Economics and Psychology from Auckland University and a Business degree in Marketing from Massey University in New Zealand. He is also a graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors. Here are the notes from his talk. Global Dairy Sector Total global milk consumption increasing due to expanding middle classes. Especially Asia. Global growth is circa 2% annually See slide at bottom left of this page. The Australian Dairy Landscape Australian Dairy Value Chain Australian dairy sector generates a value of $13.7 bn. Includes on-farm, manufacturing, wholesaling & export Employs 40,000 people, mainly rural. Australian Dairy Direction Australian production increasingly moving to noncommoditized (packaged) products ie. domestic consumption & higher-end international markets Domestic market will require additional 110 mlts per year to meet its growth Page 3
4 Domestic/Export milk utilization is circa 65% : 35% Australian processing dominated by international players Norco will be the only remaining cooperative Australian Processing Landscape See larger slide on next page. Challenges Facing Australian Dairy Sector Confidence! Weather & Environment Governance ( MG, Bonlac.) Ageing farmer population & alternative opportunities for new generations Retailer pressures. $1 Lt Milk is a psychological demotivator. Government lack of long term conviction Fragmented industry undermines global competitiveness is this looking from an Australian perspective only? Changing face of consumers & retailing Millennials have less affinity with old established brands consumer purchasing is multi-channel. Where will digital solutions be in 25 years? Product origin, animal ethics, etc growing influencers. It s Not All Doom & Gloom Global milk demand will continue to increase Developing middle classes want health & nutrition Australia best placed to provide more complex products Australians are good farmers Bio-security is a natural advantage ( not to be squandered). Australia has strong food tech & production capabilities. Its not just about Protein. Consumers want quality & flavour. Don t underestimate butterfat! Dairying naturally embraces digital solutions. Robotic milking UAV s (drones) for grass growth, irrigation, animal wellness A realistic way for young people to create wealth. Page 4
