Rotary Making a Difference bendigosouthrotary.org.au President s update Club meeting 19 October 2017 We had a full house and a lively buzz at our meeting this week, including returning travellers rejoining us, and a number of guests. It was a shame to have to sound the gong to draw attention to the lectern. Graham Neivandt and Lindsay Jolley returned to the fold after holiday travels, and our guests were PDG Gordon McKern from RC Eaglehawk, Tom Campbell from RC Next Generation, Senior Sergeant Leesa Johnson from Victoria Police, and regular attendee Victor. Snr Sgt Leesa Johnson is one of 16 participants in the Victoria Police Leaders Mentoring Program. I will provide information to members about the program in coming weeks. Leesa took the opportunity to attend the meeting this week to make her first contact with the club, and hear the Directors and Chairs report to members on progress to date towards our key goals. She introduced herself with a brief overview at the start of the meeting, but I think by then she had managed to meet with most members in her engaging and friendly style during the pre-dinner mingling. I am looking forward to our engagement with Leesa over the next 12 months. I updated members on our adjusted approach to implementing our obligations to be a child safe organisation following additional advice from D9800. We will require all members and volunteers to sign a simplified volunteer declaration form that commits them to our child safe code of conduct. We will encourage all members to have a Working With Children Card (WWCC), and require all new members to have one. Members and volunteers who do not have one will not be able to participate in child related activities, such as university open day and Red Ribbon Rebellion BBQs. We will adhere to a club policy that guides the way that we operate as a club. Members will need to have a WWCC to participate on the club Youth Service committee. The higher order obligations that relate to those involved in Youth Exchange will continue to apply. We received updates from Heather on the club sales of RC Bendigo Strathdale Xmas raffle tickets, and the delivery of first aid goods to a remote clinic in the Honiara area; Tony on the Celtic harp

2 recital on Sunday; Graham on Camp Getaway building working bees; George on delivery arrangements for our new uniform jackets; and Ian on the all important chocolate sales. And Lindsay Jolley, in yet another example of the international reach of the hand of Rotary friendship, presented me with a banner from the Rotary Club of Takapuna North in Auckland, New Zealand following his recent visit. The main business of the night was to hear from the Board Directors and Foundation Chair Merlyn (Vocations Chair Wendy was an apology) on our first quarter achievements, and plans for the next quarter. There were a few comments and questions, including the observation that I had neglected to note for the record the mock interviews conducted at East Loddon P-12 under our Vocational Service, and Lindsay noted the addition of our planned participation in the District Friendship Exchange with southern Scotland in the new year. Prior to the close of the meeting, PDG Gordon McKern, Chair of the Ulumbarra Theatre Foundation, spoke on the purpose and community service priorities of the Ulumbarra Theatre Foundation, and acknowledged the support from our club through its joint partnership with the Ulumbarra team in running the Victoria Welsh Choir concerts. Our tall poppy this week, taking home the Foundry voucher, was Heather Nixon, who has stepped up as Acting International Service Director at Board meetings when Lindsay Jolley has been unavailable, taken on coordination of our club sales of RC Bendigo Strathdale Xmas raffle tickets, and is working with Elizabeth Bell to provide further support to the Honiara hospital. Thanks and well done Heather. Max provided positive feedback to the Board on the reporting session in his usual encouraging footy coaching style, and PDG Gordon McKern also provided positive feedback to me about the club after the meeting. Members should be proud about progress to date, and now we need to keep focused on doing the things that make our club happy and supportive so that we can continue to do good in the world. A Pleasant Sunday Afternoon music recital for End Trachoma by 2020 The afternoon harp and singing Celtic music recital by Meryl Wilkinson at Clive and Jennie s on Sunday was aptly named a very relaxing recital, and great venue, food, wine, company and weather. Even the birds were joining in. Trevor Phillips was our MC. Associates who attended included PDG Gordon McKern, Vince and Judy Rossignuolo who were the raffle winners from the Welsh Choir concert, Tony s neighbour Rae Turner, Ruth s friend Chris, and Jennie s dad Ray. We also received ticket price donations from several people who could not attend. Sincere thanks to Jennie and Clive for not only providing the venue, but also providing and preparing the food, and to Pauline and Rob from Avonmore Estate winery for donating and serving the wine. Tony initiated the idea with the newer members who were tasked with developing a project with their D9800 membership incentive grant. Proceeds will be handed to PDG Murray Verso for the Rotary End Trachoma by 2020 initiative at our meeting on 2 November. Coming up Next meeting we will hear from Peter Gray on the Australian Cambodian Children s Taskforce, and John Bergbauer on John Bergbauer, warts and all. And don t forget to get your tickets for the new

release premiere of Murder on the Orient Express, supporting End Polio Now. This will be a fun social evening on Thursday 9 November in lieu of our regular weekly meeting.

The film is the new 'Murder on the Orient Express' directed by and starring Kenneth Branagh. Tickets are $20 ($8 goes to End Polio Now) CASH ONLY PLEASE.

Foundation Dinner Join us at the fifth Annual Rotary Goldfields Cluster Foundation Dinner as we learn about the Rotary Foundation s Centenary of Doing Good in the World. The event is being held at the Kangaroo Flat Sports Club on Thursday 30 November. See attached flyer for details.
