3 IT HAPPENED LAST MEETING: Monday, 11th August, 2014 Guests: Harold Pedley, Margaret Auld, Alexandra Noffs Apologies: Mariya Gojan Leave of Absence: Helen Wilson, Peter Wilson Raffle Winner: Jenny Connal International Toast The Rotary Club of Quevedo, Los Rios, Ecuador Quevedo is a city in the coastal region of Ecuador. Population is 150,000. Quevedo is located on the coast in the province of Los Rios, and is considered the ninth largest city in Ecuador. It is the main economic and commercial artery of the province, becoming one of the most important river ports in the country. The area surrounding Quevedo mainly produce bananas, corn, rice, and soybeans. The alluvial soils in the region generate excellent harvests year-round. Many banana producers complement their banana plantations with fields that produce corn, soy and rice in the wet season. In the city, this produce is often industrialized into super-market ready products, such as instant-meals, prepackaged products, noodles and other traditionally Asian foods. In recent years, the Quevedo agro-industrial complex has added value to its output by developing a strong presence in the organic product's niche both locally and overseas. Quevedo is known for its prominent Chinese immigrant population and has even been called the "Chinatown of Ecuador". This gives it a distinct appearance and cultural feeling in relation to other Ecuadorian cities. There are many chifas (Chinese food restaurants) throughout the city of highly variable quality. The Rotary Club of Quevedo, Los Rios Province, Ecuador meets each Friday at 9PM. Guests & Fellows a toast to the Rotary Club of Quevedo, Los Rios, Ecuador Guest Speaker Jenny Connal introduced Alexandra Noffs from the Holroyd Youth Services. Alexandra thanked our Club for the donation given to them last year, which has enabled many young people to "drop in" for help or counselling. They have facilities for games, showers & laundry. They were able to participate in a dance competition and are arranging a soccer competition. Paul Reid thanked Alexandra and presented her with another cheque for $5000 which was part of a grant from The Rotary Foundation to further help the troubled youth or youth in need of support in our district. Alexandra presented us with a plaque of appreciation. President Report: Jerry Duma Jerry said that the topic of discussion at the Board meeting tomorrow will be our Club dues, but he expects them to be $300. Jerry will be away for the next 3 meetings as he will be in Ukraine. Jerry thanked Robert, Amanda & Aaron for organising the Nosh last Friday, a great night was had by the 30 in attendance, great food, and best fried ice cream in the world! Vocational: John Heslop

4 John advised that he had spoken to Bernard Collimore from Cerdon College re Australian Business Week. They have about 100 girls participating, and John is seeking a couple of volunteers to be judges on the Friday. Welfare: Sofia O'Donoughue Sofia welcomed Jill & Norma back and said it was nice to see them on the improve. She also advised that Noel Hammond is back at home and would welcome visitors, but if you go wait as it takes him a while to get to the door. PetFest is on 14th September As a feature of our Golf Day, Paul has arranged a prize of a Hyundai i30 to the value of $32,000 as a prize for a hole in one on the 5th hole. Social Events: Robert Feil The next Nosh will be next Friday, 12th September at Ribs & Rumps in Parramatta. Speakers: Owen Manson 15th September will be Tanya Ilkiw from Juvenile Diabetes 13th October will be Elizabeth Svoboda from Police Legacy 20th October will be PDG Keith Roffey on Polio John Melbourne spoke on a show he saw on TV recently, which featured concerns of bad practices going on at some of the orphanages. Julia Reid spoke of a young 18 year old guy who has started business in Merrylands Mall. It is Coffee Choo, which has great coffee & is wonderful to see such a young fellow trying so hard. Doll & Bear Show - 12th October, 2014 Bill Auld requested that any members who are able to help or to obtain trolleys to assist traders with their wares for the Doll & Bear Show to please help out. The more we have the easier and quicker we can get the goods in and out on the day.
