3 IT HAPPENED LAST MEETING: Monday, 25th August, 2014 Guests: Robyn Main Apologies: Jerry Duma, Jenny Connal, Owen Manson, Jill Williams, Norma Brennan Leave of Absence: Helen Wilson, Peter Wilson Raffle Winner: Bill Auld International Toast: James Davidson, the Marco Polo of Rotary James Davidson was born in the USA in 1862 and always showed a keen interest in geography and exploration. He was a great traveller and wrote about his travels, which bought him to the attention of President Grover Cleveland. He was appointed consular agent for the USA to Formosa and spent quite some time in the Far East, under two more Presidents. After getting married, he settled in Calgary and in 1914 became a member of Rotary. He took to Rotary with a great deal of enthusiasm, having open house nearly every morning at his home serving coffee to Rotary friends. In 1921, he and a friend, Colonel Ralston took a year off from their businesses, and with their wives, sailed for Australia and New Zealand, where they organised clubs in the cities of Melbourne, Sydney, Wellington and Auckland. The Rotary Club of Melbourne was chartered on 21 April, 1921 as the first Rotary Club in Australia. The Rotary Club of Sydney had its inaugural meeting on 7 May, On returning home, he became District Governor, and chairman to various committees, but his vision was to be Rotary's ambassador plenipotentiary. In 1928, he set out on a voyage which became a 3 year odyssey, involving tens of thousands of kilometres. RI had given him $8000 to fund his extension mission, but in the end he spent a quarter of a million dollars of his own money. He ended up establishing clubs in Athens, Cairo, Jerusalem, in India the clubs of Bombay, Delhi, Madras, a club in Colombo in Sri Lanka, clubs of Thayetmyo, Rangoon, in Malaysia the clubs of Penang, Seremban, Kuala Lumpur, Ipoh, Mallacca, Klang, In Indonesia, the clubs of Batavia, Bandoeng, Malang, Semerang, Medan, a club in Simgapore and Bangkok and Hong Kong. James Davidson has been dubbed the Marco Polo of Rotary. Many millions of Rotarians have profited from the lessons he drew from his travels and meeting strong men from other ends of the earth. He said, "in each race or nationality, one finds many things to admire" and sought to diminish the differences of "border, breed and birth" President Report: Acting Vera Liondas At the Board meeting discussion was held on having mini banners made, the price is being looked into. 22nd September will be a Members night for our honorary members and to recognise Barrie & Eileen Britten for all their work. The Public Forum last week went well. The next one has been cancelled. On 15th September will be our next one with the speaker being Tanya Ilkiw on Juvenile Diabetes Pet Fest is to be held on 14th September, but we will not be having a stall this year. received from Westmead Millenium Institute for Research, who are almost ready to open their new building & there will be 3 plaques recognising our fund raising for them. 1 two bedroom apartment is still available for the Conference in November, please let Vera know if you are interested otherwise she will let it go.

Treasurer: Mariya Gojan Dues for this year will be $300, or they can be paid $150 half yearly. Youth: Alana Wilson Mimi Tran sent a report on her recent camp. Acceptance letters received for our 2 students for NYSF Community: Allan Ezzy Allan had received some information on an upcoming Safety Day for Council in October, but is waiting more advice. Vocational: John Heslop John advised that he will try for a visit to the Millenium Institute on 13th October, and will confirm arrangements. President Jerry had asked John to see if someone could represent our Club at an SES function on Saturday, Allan advised he would John again mentioned Australian Business Week at Cerdon College and asked if anyone could spare some time 7-10th October to please let him know. Club Service: Robert Feil The train trip for 18th September is being altered to 27th September, please consider and let Robert know. John Heslop is investigating a cruise for November that could be a lot cheaper, further information to follow. As there are only 7 or 8 for the Ribs & Rump Nosh, it may be cancelled or changed, watch out for details. Fund Raising: Rod O'Donoughue The Mens Conference at Kings School is on 6th September and help is needed from all members if possible. The busiest time is morning tea, lunch & afternoon tea. It is our biggest fund raiser, so please try and help if possible. Jill sent her thanks for all who helped for Daffodil Day last Friday. We collected $4, Vera & Sofia saw a movie last week with the council - Girls Night In - it showed the importance of education for girls. Doll & Bear Show - 12th October, 2014 Bill Auld requested that any members who are able to help or to obtain trolleys to assist traders with their wares for the Doll & Bear Show to please help out. The more we have the easier and quicker we can get the goods in and out on the day.

Golf Day As our Golf Day is on 7th November, it would be appreciated if members are able to donate goods for our grocery trolley.

We will need plenty to fill our shopping trolley, and if you are able to source any other goods from businesses that would be good for our raffle it would be greatly appreciated.

They were given land at 73 Fullagar Road, Wentworthville to establish a community garden. They now have 90 members and have been greatly supported by Holroyd Council.

Guest Speaker Rod O'Donoughue introduced our speaker, Robyn Main, from the Wentworthville Community Garden. Robyn joined the steering committee in They were given land at 73 Fullagar Road, Wentworthville to establish a community garden. They now have 90 members and have been greatly supported by Holroyd Council. They have held an open day each year since 2008 to raise money & this year's day will be on 11th October, 10am to 2pm. They have entered the Royal Easter Show competition and won several first prizes the past four years. Sofia thanked Robyn for her time & her work with the garden.
