The City will receive $435,000 fr the Hsking Avenue prject and $225,000 fr the Hageman Rad Flyver. Well dne! Tday, the grundbreaking was held fr anther majr prject - the State Rute 99, Nrth and Suth Widening. The purpse f this prject is t relieve traffic cngestin, imprve traffic peratins, facilitate gds mvement and prvide fr mre efficient transprtatin circulatin. Specifically: The nrthbund widening will add a 12-ft lane and a 10-ft inside shulder in each directin frm State Rute 204 t the Beardsley Canal Undercrssing. Funding in the amunt f $12.5 millin will cme frm Prpsitin 1B State Rute 99 Bnd Savings Funds. Cnstructin is expected t last until late Fall f this year. The suthbund widening will als add a 12-ft lane and a 10-ft inside shulder in each directin frm State Rute 119 t the Wilsn Rad Overcrssing. It will cst $34 millin, and will be likewise funded. Cnstructin is expected t take abut a year. We received ntice frm KernCOG that we are the recipient f a $2.7 millin grant fr the purpse f building a parking ramp t serve the Amtrak Statin, CVB and ther dwntwn needs. This has been in prcess fr quite a lng time, and we are pleasantly surprised by it. The Cmmunity Develpment Department merits thanks fr wrking with the COG t secure the mney! AEG has been wrking with staff t affect a smth transitin as we mve clser t July 1 st when they fficially becme the new management cmpany fr ur civic facilities. As part f their cntractual terms, AEG will be making a capital cntributin f $500,000 tward the facilities, t be used at the City s discretin. At the time the management agreement was presented fr Cuncil apprval, we reprted that sme imprvements have lng been needed at the amphitheatre t make it a mre

2 General Infrmatin June 14, 2013 Page 2 attractive and cmfrtable venue fr events. With that gal in mind, City staff has already cmpleted sme adjustments t the bench seating t make it mre cmfrtable. In additin, AEG is in the prcess f purchasing three prtable restrm units, which, as an added benefit, can be utilized at ther City lcatins when we need them fr special events. The cst f apprximately $131,000 fr the prtable units will be treated as an in-kind cntributin and deducted frm AEG s $500,000 capital cntributin when they fficially cme n bard. We cntinue t be favrably impressed with AEG s pr-active, can d attitude and lk frward t a very psitive and successful relatinship with them. The Cnventin and Visitrs Bureau has released their new Visitrs Guide, and it is the best ne ever prduced t date. A news release is attached. Accrding t staff, there are 6-8 crews frm the Bakersfield Hmeless Center, wrking every weekday, wh, as f May 21 st, had filled 356 bags f trash n Highway 99, and 426 bags n Highway 58. The Kern Cunty Sheriff s detail uses an inmate crew frm the Lerd facility twice a week, and they have als been quite successful. The Kern Cunty Waste Management Department has prduced Public Service Annuncements (PSA), and KGET / Channel 17 is wrking n sme, as well. Miscellaneus News As the weather heats up, the San Jaquin Cmmunity Hspital Ice Center is a great place t cl dwn, and have fun at the same time. The increase was due t the increase in the high schls swim teams, swim meets, lap swim and trainings. McMurtrey was als clsed ne day n April 29 th fr repair and maintenance. McMurtrey Aquatic Center: Mnthly attendance at the McMurtrey Aquatic Center was 8,249 cmpared t last year s 5,682. This 45.2% increase is due t the increase in attendance fr the high schl swim teams, swim meets, lap swim, Waterpark Lifeguard class and Water Safety Instructr Class. 100 Mile Club: The 100 mile lap swim club is currently made up f 353 active members that swam 12, miles this mnth. The club has swum a cmbined ttal f 115,370 miles. One year ag the club had 294 active members and swum a ttal f 96,890 miles! Waterpark Lifeguard & Water Safety Instructr Curses: Tw classes were cnducted this mnth by ur Aquatic Trainers. On April 5 th April 14 th we held a Waterpark Lifeguard class with 14 participants and n April 20 th 28 a Water Safety Instructr class with 14 participants. Jeffersn Pl: Silver Creek Pl: High schl swim team attendance at Jeffersn Pl fr the mnth f April ttaled 1,464. Three high schl swim meets were als hsted this mnth. Adaptive Prgramming: Adaptive Sftball Adaptive sftball Spring League ended n Thursday, April 25 th with each team receiving a trphy and champinship t-shirts Adaptive Yuth Tennis In cllabratin with Kern Cunty Tennis Assciatin (KCTA), the Adaptive Yuth Tennis Prgram started this mnth at Jastr Tennis Curts. KCTA prvides the caches, tennis rackets and balls fr this prgram. League f Dreams-Adaptive T-Ball League f Dreams did nt have t charge anyne t participate in t-ball this year due t their fund raising effrts. This raised the participatin level frm 164 participants last year t 211 this year. Athletic Prgramming: Adult Sftball With all the spring rain, we had 35 make-up games t schedule befre May 17 th. This means Patrits Suth and MLK Fields were used Mnday thrugh Friday fr make-up games in additin t Mesa Marin, Beach and Wayside. The lecture was given by Ken Dyar, Directr f Physical Educatin and After-Schl Prgrams fr the Delan Unin Schl District. Pee Wee T-Ball and T-Ball League There are 30 vlunteer caches wrking in this prgram. A mandatry parent s meeting was held April 2 nd at Crp Yard t give parent s 1 st practice was held n April 16 th at Silver Creek Park. Opening Day was Saturday, April 20 th at Sliver Creek Park with all games at 9:00am. Picture Day was Saturday, April 20 th and the leagues will end n Saturday, June 1 st. Staff is teaching the participants abut nutritin and sil cmpsitin. Tree Divisin staff assisted Cde Enfrcement with the clean-up, spending a ttal f seven (7) days remving and hauling debris frm the area. The mnthly trees trimmed reprt will reflect the impact t ur trimming services due t this prject. TPRW Amphitheater seating remdel began Mnday, April 8, Pin Oak Park On April 8, 2013 a few cncrete issues were addressed between reservatin area and restrm. Athletic Prgramming: Adult Sftball The Spring Sftball League ended n May 24 th with 29 divisins receiving 1 st and 2 nd place trphies and champinship t-shirts fr the 1 st place teams. Fur divisins held champinship games t determine first and secnd place. Thanks again t Kern Trphy fr dnating all 58 trphies fr the Spring League. There are 192 teams in the Summer League with 114 Men s teams and 78 Ced. This is an increase frm last summer s 173 teams. There was a Manager s Meeting and Umpire s Training held n Thursday, May 23 rd. The tw week evaluatin games started n May 28 th. Cnnr s Cncessin reprted earning $6, in sales at the Mesa Marin Sprts Cmplex. Sftball Turnaments An ASA Military Appreciatin sftball turnament was held at the Mesa Marin Sprts Cmplex n May 18 th & 19 th with 25 teams participating. The Bakersfield Assciatin f Realtrs held a turnament at Patrits Nrth & Suth n May 18 th with 8 teams participating. Pee Wee T-Ball & T-Ball League Pee Wee and T-Ball Leagues cntinued playing games n Saturdays at Silver Creek Park this mnth. The seasn will end n June 1 st with an awards ceremny fr all the participants and the vlunteer caches. Includes 30 vlunteer caches wrking in this prgram. Tennis Classes Pee Wee Tennis classes were held this mnth at Jastr Park. Junir Drills Tennis classes were held this mnth at Silver Creek Park. Adaptive Prgramming: Adaptive Yuth Tennis In Cllabratin with Kern Cunty Tennis Assciatin (KCTA), the Adaptive Yuth Tennis Prgram cmpleted their class this mnth at Jastr Tennis Curts. KCTA prvides the caches, tennis rackets, and balls fr this prgram. League f Dreams-Adaptive T-Ball League f Dreams did nt have t charge anyne t participate in t-ball this year due t their fund raising effrts. This raised the participatin level frm 164 participants last year t 211 this year. League f Dreams cmpleted their league n Sunday, May 19 th with a special awards ceremny. All 211 players received a trphy and the Angel Vlunteers were recgnized fr vlunteering their time fr this special league.
