2 The Powahay District Cub Scout Activities Committee invites you and your Cubs to the Annual Cub Scout Field Day CUBOPOLY October 20, 2012 EARLY BIRD $10 per Youth & Adults if Paid by Oct. 10 $12 per Youth & Adults if Paid AFTER Oct. 10 Join us for a day of fun events as we transform Hoyt Scout Reservation into a GIANT outdoor Monopoly Game Board. Ten Teams of Cub Scouts will follow the Cubopoly Trail to visit ten action Stations featuring, Archery Shooting, Inflatable Obstacle Course, a 6 foot Giant Ball, Ultimate Frisbee Belt Loop, Volleyball Belt Loop, Nature Science Belt Loop, Whittling and Soap Bar Regatta, Snack Station, Fun Chance Station and more. It s great fun for the entire family. Teams are named after Monopoly Game Piece Team Wheelbarrow, Team Battleship, Team Racecar, Team Locomotive, Team Thimble, Team Scottie Dog, Team Top Hat, Team Howitzer and Team Lantern and will earn Cubopoly money at each station they visit. See how much money your team can earn by the end of the day. Check-in starts at the 11 AM. Bring a bag lunch or for a small fee a hot dog lunch will be available. We are bringing back optional family camping! Starting at 4 PM, Saturday, Oct. 20 and ending by 10 AM on Sunday, Oct. 21, Packs can enjoy an overnight camping experience. Packs are responsible for their own programs and meals. BALOO Trained packs can cook on their own, others can order in dinner (see page 7). 6 Field Day Guidelines We have limited parking at Hoyt Scout reservation and ask that your pack please make arrangements to car-pool. Once we fill up the lower parking lot all other cars will be directed to park at the upper parking area near the Hoyt cabin. CHECK IN will occur in at Jackson Pavilion (main field near flag pole): To speed up the registration process and ensure that the activities begin on time - we ask that you please designate only one person from your unit to check in at the registration table. No one other than that person should approach the registration table. When this happens it confuses staff and delays the checkin process. Full Roster required at check in. A second person from your unit that families can report to while a leader is checking in your pack is highly recommended. Also make sure that members know their Pack Number - believe it or not many families do not know own their Pack's Number. Ten Teams and Ten 20 minute stations. 1. No refunds for no shows. 2. Each Team will start at a different station and rotate around to visit all stations. 3. One Team will do the Archery Safety from 11:10 to 11:30 & end up with a 20 minute free period at the end. 4. Jail, Just Visiting, Free Parking and Go To Jail are just for decoration purposes and are not stations. 5. Teams can collect $200 when they pass GO. 6. Teams can earn money at each station. We will have a JUST FOR FUN informal winner with the Team that collects the most money. 7. Each station lasts 20 minutes. All stations are crewed by volunteers - please follow their instructions; stay on schedule; and thank them for their time. 8. An air horn will announce the time to move on to the next activity. Please move quickly and orderly to the next station. 9. Please remember Doing one s best is most important. HAVE FUN!!!! If at the end of the day we have smiling Cub Scouts because they enjoyed the spirit of the afternoon, then we will have true winners! 10. If you have any questions or need First Aid throughout the day, please find our staff at the Headquarters at the Jackson Pavilion. Recommended items for Field Day Only participants: Bring a Bag Lunch or Hot Dog Lunch Available at event. Each Scout will need a bar of Ivory Soap for the Whittling Station. Make sure soap is biodegradable and safe for environment. Clothing appropriate for the day/season all persons attending (you will be outside for the day note that the boys will be participating in some athletic events), so consider dressing in layers sweater or sweatshirt; long pants; coat; warm socks and older shoes or boots Day Pack (to carry items) Bottled Water and snacks *Depending on Weather Rain Gear (Coat/Pants/Poncho/Rubber Boots) Adults may want to bring a folding chair. 7 Field Day Camping Guidelines Please Share With All Camping Overnight Packs are responsible for providing their own program and supervision of their Cub Scouts and siblings after the Field Day Activities end. Accidents and injuries occur when boys are left on their own to find things to do and/or are not properly supervised. Check your Cub Scout Leaders Manuals for games and outdoor activities and please make sure all children are properly supervised. Camping Guidelines 1. District will not be providing meals for Packs camping overnight. According to BSA guidelines, only Packs with BALOO Trained Adults are permitted to cook. Packs without BALOO trained adults can order in food (see below) or buddy up with a BALOO trained pack. 2. No setting up tents and campsites from 11 AM to 3:30 PM during the Field Day Program. You can set up campsite between 10:30 and 11 am (not earlier) or after 3:30 pm. We have designated a camping area as to not interfere with our program areas. If you set up outside that area you will be required to move your campsite. See map on page You will not be able to pull your car up to your campsite; so please be aware that whatever you plan on bringing; you must carry or cart it to the camping area 4. The temperature has been known to be in the high 30 s/low 40's on Saturday night. For many of our Cubs, this may be their first experience camping overnight. We want it to be a warm and positive one. If you have families that are not prepared with warm bed clothes, sleeping bags, teddy bear and other appropriate gear, please advise them not to camp. 5. This is rustic camping. No electricity or flush toilets. No means to plug in air mattresses to be inflated. 6. We will adhere to Cub Scout Camping and Safe Guide to Scouting guidelines. If we feel weather conditions are not appropriate for Cub Scout age camping, then we will cancel the overnight part of the program. 7. Cub Scout Packs are required to have an adult (parent or designee) for each boy camping. When camping, no youth is permitted to sleep in the tent of an adult other than his own parent or guardian. Put boys together in a tent, and non-parents can set up a tent nearby for overnight supervision. 8. No tent material is completely fireproof. Only flashlights and electric lanterns are permitted in tents. No flames in tents. 9. There are no garbage receptacles or dumpsters on site. So please be sure to pack out your trash. 10. There is no program or services available for Cub Scouts Sunday morning. We are asking all families to be out by 10 am. 11. Tobacco use and alcoholic beverages are not permitted. If you don t want to cook and/or do not have BALOO Trained adult, you can order from Lombardi Pizza (203) , located a short drive from the camp. 2 Long Ridge Rd, West Redding, CT CAMP CUBOPOLY Required equipment and sleeping gear for Overnight: You will not be able to pull your car up to your campsite; so please be aware that whatever you plan on bringing; you must carry or cart it to the camping area. Tent and Ground Cloth Sleeping Bags/pillow Flashlight Sleeping Pads (provides insulation from cold/damp ground. 1- Complete change of warm clothes (and socks) for each person camping over sleep change prior to going to sleep [consider Long Johns/Long underwear; warm socks; sweatpants; hooded (or regular) sweatshirt or fleece; have warm hat and gloves/mittens on hand] Warm coat (to wear during dinner/campfire in case it gets cool at night) Camp or Folding Chair(s) Lantern (battery operated is recommended) Extra batteries Light Sticks (for use as a night light) Personal Toiletries (Toothbrush; Toothpaste; etc) Folding chairs for adults. Enjoy the great outdoors! Keep the electronics at home and minimize the use of cell phones around the Scouts. 7

8 Belt Loop Advancement at Field Day Ultimate (Frisbee) Complete these three requirements: 1. Explain the rules of ultimate or disc golf to your leader or adult partner. 2. Spend at least 30 minutes practicing ultimate or disc golf skills. 3. Participate in a game of ultimate or disc golf. Volleyball Complete these three requirements: 1. Explain the rules of volleyball to your leader or adult partner. 2. Spend at least 30 minutes practicing skills to play the sport of volleyball. 3. Participate in a volleyball game. Both Ultimate and Volleyball requires a 30 minute practice session. Our field Day Stations are only 20 minutes. Adding an extra 10 minutes to each of our stations would make for a very long day. To meet these requirements, we will keep these areas open after 4 PM and boys under adult supervisor by their Pack, can continue game playing from 4 to 6 PM during overnight camping period. Packs/Dens may want to do a practice session prior or after the Field Day to complete the requirement. Geology Complete these three requirements: 1. Explain to your den or an adult family member what geology means. 2. Collect samples of igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic rocks. Explain how each was formed. 3. Collect samples of three minerals. Explain to your family or den what a mineral is and show and tell about the minerals you collected. Belt Loops will NOT be awarded at Field Day and must be purchased by the Pack. Webelos to Scout Cub Scout Field Day Opportunities For Senior Webelos (5th. Grade Webelos) Senior Webelos (only) are invited to camp with a host troop during the preceding weekend at the Boy Scout Fall Camporee Oct We know it may not be possible for all senior Webelos to attend the Boy Scout Fall Camporee Weekend and/or a Pack may not be able to make arrangements with a hosting Troop. To help our Senior Webelos earn Arrow of Light requirements we are offering an alternative program for Field Day. Sr. Webelos Opportunities: Overnight camping to meet Arrow of Light Requirements. A chance to work with Boy Scouts on Arrow of Light and joining requirements. Some special activities. Learn about the fun and adventure to be a Boy Scout This and more. 8
