3 Station Cub Scout Field Day Stations Stations Cubs in Shining Armor 1 Dragon Slaying: A combination of Archery TBD and Stone Throwing, two skills that were highly valued during medieval times. The goal at this station is to fill and fire as many water balloons during a short period of time at the dragons sitting at various distances. 2 Quoits (ring toss), Horse shoes and Tugof-war: All of these are medieval games of TBD skill and strength. Quoits involved tossing rope rings at stakes. Horse shoes involved throwing horseshoes at a particular target, often a nail. Tug-of-war is the same today as it was in medieval times. 3 Shinty (broom hockey): Shinty was originally created as a form of sword fighting prac- TBD tice, this game used curved sticks called camans and a leather ball. Two goals called hails were set apart on a grassy field and each was protected by a goalkeeper. Similar to hockey, Shinty is still played today in England and Scotland. 4 Knucklebones (dice), Pick-up-sticks and TBD Draughts (checkers): All of these are medieval games of chance and strategy. Knucklebones are the vertebrae (the backbone) of medium-sized animals like sheep or goats, and the games you play with them are like jacks. 5 Prisoner s Base (chase and tag game): A TBD medieval game of amusement. This English game of chase and tag was banned in the 1300 s by King Edward III. Before the twentieth century, the game was known as Chevy Chase or Chivy. 6 Medieval melee tournament (foam swords TBD and shield fighting against an adult knight). Early mock battles also known as melees in the medieval period were chaotic in nature and many knights suffered bad injuries or were killed. Around the 10th century, the melee and joust were combined to create the medieval tournament. 7 Shield-making (cardboard shields with cardboard and duct tape handles): At this stations, TBD Scouts will get to design, create and decorate their own cardboard shield to take home for future foam sword duels and tournaments with their siblings. 8 Inflatable obstacle course. An obstacle TBD course to help our Scout knights to become battle ready by enabling them to practice important skills such as crawling, climbing, jumping and jockeying for space during battle. Preparing For the Cub Scouts Knights in Shining Armor Field Day Download at: Den and Pack Meeting Planning Suggestions Join us for a weekend of family fun as our Cub Scout become Knights for the weekend and experience what life was like during the Middle Ages, including learning about and playing medieval games of amusement, skill, strength, chance, strategy, and card and ball games. Cub Scouts can be knighted as they advance in rank. We found this oldie but goodie. Pack Theme Stories of King Arthur and his Knights of the Roundtable and of other lone knights who roamed Europe during the Middle Ages always capture a boy s imagination. For this theme, your Cub Scouts can have a lot of fun playing knights and learning about the Age of Chivalry. Highlights of the month will be a pack meeting tournament patterned on the medieval tournaments at which knights matched their fighting skills (use the Field Day as the tournament). Dens will spend the month preparing costumes, equipment, and shields for the tournament. They ll also practice some of the tournament contests and perhaps prepare a skit or song (for the pack meeting) use the field day event. Come to Field Day in Medieval Costume. We ll have prizes for best costumes. Update for 2018 As we welcome girls into our Scouting program we should remind that one of the heroes of Medieval times was Joan of Arc. At just 19 years old, Joan a teenaged-peasant from north-east France, convinced the French ruler Charles VII to give her an army to relieve the besieged city of Orleans, which Joan was able to do just after a few days. For the next few months Joan was able to lead French forces to several victories against the English. Just Google to share more information. Powahay District Cub Scout Field Day Oct 20, 2018 Page 5
