CHECK IN will occur at District HQ: To speed up the registration process and ensure that the activities begin on time, we ask that you please designate only one person from your unit to check in at the registration table. No one other than that person should approach the registration table. When this happens, it confuses staff and delays the check-in process. Full Roster required at check in. A second person from your unit that families can report to while a leader is checking in your pack is highly recommended. Also make sure that members know their Pack Number - believe it or not many families do not know own their Pack's Number. 4 Scarecrow Making Contest: Each Pack or Den may make a scarecrow prior to the event to set up on the field for the scarecrow judging contest. All scarecrows must be handmade (no bought scarecrows). All scarecrows must be able to stand or sit on their own (you provide sticks or props). All scarecrows must be on the field and set up in the roped off area on Saturday no later than 12 noon. All Cub Scout Field Day Scarecrow Making Contest scarecrows must be marked with Pack number to qualify for judging. All scarecrows MUST be picked up after the closing on Saturday. Prizes to be awared.1st, 2nd and 3rd best. We re looking for volunteers with a large truck or pick-up truck to transport our scarecrow entries from the parking area to lower Hoyt. Contact John Hanks at johnwhanks@hotmail.com to volunteer. 1. Build the frame. Begin by centering a 5 foot stick near the top of a 6 to 8 foot stick, rake handle or garden pole. This creates the shoulders of the scarecrow. 2. Put the shirt on. Dress your scarecrow with an old plaid shirt, using the horizontal stick for his arms. Button the shirt up the front, then tie the arm ends and bottom of the shirt using twine or wire. 3. Stuff the shirt. Strategically stuff the shirt to fill out your scarecrow. Straw, hay, leaves, grass clippings, wood chips and rags are all acceptable stuffing materials 4. Put the overalls on. Make a hole in the seat of the overalls for the vertical stick to pass through. Put the overalls on the scarecrow, placing the straps on the shoulders. Tie the cuffs with twine or wire. Fill out the legs of the overalls using the same stuffing as you used for the shirt. 5. Give him hands. Fill the gloves with enough stuffing to keep them in shape, tuck in the ends of the shirt sleeves, then secure with wire or twine. 6. Give him feet. Stick the cuffs of the pants into the tops of some old work boots, or other shoes. 7. Making the Head Using a pillowcase. Half fill the pillowcase with straw or the stuffing material of your choice. Pin the pillowcase with safety pins to prevent the stuffing from falling out the bottom, but don't close the bottom up entirely. Insert your scarecrow head onto the vertical pole (neck of the scarecrow). Push until the top of the pole is at the top of the pillowcase, right through the straw. Secure the pillowcase to the pole using twine or wire, then cut off the excess material and remove the safety pins. A pumpkin is an alternative for the head. 8. Draw the face, add hair, and accessorize. Licensing / Attribution License: Creative Commons Uploaded by: Wikiphoto Recognitions and Special Awards The Patch We will have a limited number of hat pins for sale. Celebrate Freedom Award Powahay s Battle of Hoyt will provide fun learning experiences for our Cub Scouts. In recognition, each Cub Scout can earn the Celebrate Freedom Award. Cub Leaders will be given historical questions for their Scouts to find the answers. The answers can be found by visiting the stations and other activities. The Heroes of the Revolution Hike is one of the requirements. We ve also put together a Historical Narrative that can be use to prepare for the event and as a guide. This can be downloaded from our district web page: There s no charge for the Dog Tag as it s part of the fee and there s no pass or fail. All we ask is our Cub Scouts Do their best! Earn the Celebrate Freedom Award 1-1/8" x 2" metal dog tag Includes unattached 30" ball chain Powahay District Cub Scout Field Day Oct 25, 2014 Page 6
