4 CAMPOREE OVERVIEW The Garden State Council River Jam is an exciting combination of demonstrations, entertainment and badges, at the Camden Waterfront in Camden, NJ. There are opportunities to camp one or two nights on the Battleship USS New Jersey, visit the NJ Adventure Aquarium, or Hike over the Ben Franklin Bridge to visit the National Constitution Center. This event will provide activities for Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts in a three day outdoor camping event. Youth and adult scouts from the surrounding areas of New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Delaware will attend this River Jam, but there is a capacity cutoff number of The planners for this event are working fast and deliberate to create the details that will make this a memorable event for everyone who attends Registration can be made on-line at: COST AND SPECIALS $50.00 Is the Base Price. This includes: Camping at Camden Riversharks Stadium for Friday and Saturday night, all meals, and snacks plus Local Scout Show and Skill, and Entertainment Additional options: $35.00 per night if you would like to sleep in the sailor s berths of the Battleship New Jersey. This price includes a Tour so there is no need to pay for the al a carte tour. (see below) $10.00 All day Admission fee to the NJ Adventure Aquarium. Once you have the wristband you can come and go as many times as you would like. $5.00 All day Admission fee to the Battleship (for those not sleeping aboard). UNIFORMS AND IDENTIFICATION Throughout the weekend all participants are expected to be dressed in Class A uniform for opening ceremonies, religious services, evening show, and events taking place outside the Camden Riversharks Stadium. 5 DIRECTIONS TO THE EVENT From Northern or Southern New Jersey via I-295 From I-295 North take Exit 26- I-676 North. Take I-676, north approximately 3 miles to Exit 5A Martin Luther King Boulevard." Staying in the right lane go straight off of the exit ramp (east), follow blue Waterfront signs approximately 1.1 miles to 3rd Street. Turn right on Third Street (north) and follow it for three blocks to Cooper Street. Turn left at the third light, Cooper Street (west) and stay on Cooper for three blocks to its end at Delaware Avenue. Parking Staff will guide you to the appropriate lot pending on the placard you vehicle is displaying. From Northern New Jersey via the New Jersey Turnpike From the New Jersey Turnpike, take Exit 4 onto Route 73 North. Take Route 73 to Route 38 West towards Camden. Take Route 38 West and bear right at overpass to Route 30 West. Stay on 30 West approximately 1.6 miles to the Martin Luther King Boulevard/Waterfront Attractions exit on the right. Off the ramp continue straight until the road splits. Following the blue Waterfront/Aquarium signs, stay to the left onto Martin Luther King Boulevard. Follow MLK Blvd approximately 1.1 miles to Third Street. Turn right on Third Street (north) and follow it for three blocks to Cooper Street. Turn left at the third light, Cooper Street (west) and stay on Cooper for three blocks to its end at Delaware Avenue. Parking Staff will guide you to the appropriate lot pending on the placard you vehicle is displaying. From Philadelphia and the Western Suburbs via I 676 From I-76 (Schuylkill Expressway), follow signs to central Philadelphia taking Exit 344, I676 East. Take I- 676 approximately 1.6 miles to the exit for the Ben Franklin Bridge. Staying in the left lanes on the exit ramp, make a right (South) at the bottom of the ramp onto 6th Street. Stay left on 6th Street following the circle to the Ben Franklin Bridge. Cross the Ben Franklin Bridge and bear right to continue on I-676 South. Remaining in the right lane, look for Exit 5B, less than 1/4 mile from toll plaza on the right-hand side. Exit at 5B Market Street/Waterfront. Stay on Market Street (west), following blue Waterfront/Aquarium signs for approximately 1 mile to 3rd Street. Turn right on Third Street (north) and follow it for three blocks to Cooper Street. Turn left at the third light, Cooper Street (west) and stay on Cooper for three blocks to its end at Delaware Avenue. Parking Staff will guide you to the appropriate lot pending on the placard you vehicle is displaying. From Bucks County and Northeastern PA via I-95 From I-95 South, take Exit 22, I-676 East/Callowhill Street. Make a right onto Callowhill Street (West) and get into the left lane. Make a left onto 6th Street (South) staying in the left lane and following signs for Ben Franklin Bridge. Cross the Ben Franklin Bridge and bear right to continue on I-676 South, remaining in the right lane. Look for Exit 5B, less than 1/4 mile from toll plaza on the right-hand side. Exit at 5B Market Street/Waterfront. Stay on Market Street (west), following blue Waterfront/Aquarium signs for approximately 1 mile to 3rd Street. Turn right on Third Street (north) and follow it for three blocks to Cooper Street. Turn left at the third light, Cooper Street (west) and stay on Cooper for three blocks to its end at Delaware Avenue. Parking Staff will guide you to the appropriate lot pending on the placard you vehicle is displaying. From Delaware, Maryland and points south via I-95 From I-95 North follow signs to Exit 19, I-76/Walt Whitman Bridge. Cross the Walt Whitman Bridge and move to the right lane, looking for signs for I-676 North. Take 676 North approximately 3 miles to Exit 5A Martin Luther King Boulevard. Staying in the right lane go straight off of the exit ramp (west) and follow blue Waterfront signs approximately 1.1 miles to 3rd Street. Turn right on Third Street (north) and follow it for three blocks to Cooper Street. Turn left at the third light, Cooper Street (west) and stay on Cooper for three blocks to its end at Delaware Avenue. 7 CHECK IN PROCEDURES TOUR AND ACTIVITY PLANS (permits) Tour and Activity Plans(permits) must be filed for this event prior to the event. Confirmation of the tour plan filing must be available when you register. FAQ about plans are available at: ROSTERS A roster of all Scouts and adult Scouters must be available at registration. One copy of the roster will stay with the unit leader and a second copy must be handed in at registration. SAFETY AND SECURITY The RiverJam Camporee will be manned around the clock both inside the stadium and outside the stadium with professional and volunteer security staff. Certified EMT staff will be on duty during the event. There will be a central command center that will dispatch FIRST AID, SECURITY, SAFTY personnel for any emergency call NO TENT STAKES ALLOWED. 9 RESTROOMS The restrooms inside the Camden Riversharks Stadium are located on the first and third baselines, as well as behind home plate. Outside the stadium there will be port-a-pots located throughout event CONCESSIONS The Camden Riversharks left field concession stand will be open on Saturday - 11 am to 7 pm. Participants will be able to purchase hot dogs, popcorn, chips, candy, soda, and water during these times. The camporee contract with the food vendor states: NO FOOD OR BEVERAGE ITEMS ALLOWED TO BE BROUGHT INTO THE STADIUM CRACKER BARRELS The Cracker Barrels will be held in the Diamond Club of the Camden Riversharks Stadium. All units are required to send one only, adult leader to each Cracker Barrels. Each unit will be issued one set of credentials for one adult for each Cracker Barrel. Important information will be distributed at these meetings. To access the Diamond Club, use the stairs or elevator up to the third floor. Elevator access is at the main entrance.. JAMBOREE ON THE AIR (JOTA) This activity will be presented by the Radio Club of Burlington County, the Radio Club of Southern New Jersey and GSC Troop 811 as well as the Tabernacle Office of Emergency Management and they will work with Scouts and Scouters of all ages attending the River Jam to connect with Scouts and HAM radio enthusiast around the nation and around the world. The radio transmitters will be set up on the stadiumconcourse next to the carousel and will operate from 12 PM Saturday, throughout the night to 8 AM on Sunday. All Scouts must have the permission of their leaders to attend and after lights out on Saturday must be accompanied by a buddy as well as an adult leader. All are encouraged to get on the air and get in contact with the world. TRADING POST A Camporee Trading Post will be set up near the main entrance to the stadium on the concourse level LOST AND FOUND There will be one central LOST AND FOUND, at the trading post. TENTING NO PEGS CAN BE USED AT THE CAMPOREE Because there are sprinkler pipes and heads under the grass; all tents and other equipment must be free standing. This means that no pegs can be used at the camporee. Tent space will be allocated using the formula; 10ft X 10ft per each four persons registered. ELECTRONIC GAMES ETC. It is strongly suggested that electronic games not be brought to the event. Items lost or stolen or broken are the responsibility of the owner. NO TENT STAKES ALLOWED. 10 FOOD & UTILITIES There will be six (6) meals provided throughout the weekend as part of your admission. All meals will be served in front of the right field, home plate or left field concession stands located on the main concourse of the Camden Riversharks Stadium. You must present your ID wrist-band at the counter to receive your food, The wrist band will be marked in some way to denote your meal has been used. The camporee contract with the food vendor states: NO FOOD OR BEVERAGE ITEMS OTHER THAN WATER ARE ALLOWED TO BE BROUGHT INTO THE STADIUM. NO TENT STAKES ALLOWED. All tents must be free standing. 12 CUB SCOUT ACTIVITIES There are multiple activities suitable for Cub Scouts being offered throughout the weekend. Most activities will be held in the Camden Rivershark s Concourse, or in an activities tent outside the stadium. Further location instructions will be available upon check in. TANDY LEATHER PROJECT - Scouts will be able to make a leather keepsake for this event. Materials and instruction are provided by Tandy Leather Factory. and will be limited to ten boys at one time. The project will take approximately minutes STEM AWARD - With the guidance of the Mad Science Group and the Huntington Learning Center, the scouts will begin work on the STEM award BSA s newest Science Award. STEM is an acronym for Science, Technology, Engineering and Math. The sessions will last approximately 30 minutes long and will be limited to 20 boys per session. NECKERCHIEF SLIDES - Scouts will make a commemorative 2013 celebration neckerchief slide. Project should take 5 10 minutes. JAMBOREE ON THE AIR - This activity will allow Scouts, both Cub and Boy Scouts to connect with other Scouts and folks around the world. The radio transmitters will be set up on the stadium-concourse next to the carousel and will be running all day and night. See page 9 for more detail. CYBER CHIP -Today's youth are spending more time than ever using digital media for education, research, socializing, and fun. To help families and volunteers keep youth safe while online, the Boy Scouts of America introduces the Cyber Chip. In developing this exciting new tool, the BSA teamed up with content expert NetSmartz, part of the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children and training expert for many law enforcement agencies. NetSmartz has created a Scouting portal showcasing Cyber Chip resources, including grade-specific videos, for each level. Topics include cyber bullying, cell phone use, texting, blogging, gaming, and identity theft. Cubs and units will go over things to do with parents or den leaders, so they can earn the Cyber Chip award. ENGINEERING ACTIVITIES AND CATAPULTS - Webelos Scouts can work on the Engineering Activity Pin and all Scouts can learn to build miniature catapults and shoot at targets using them. RAINGUTTER REGATTA - Pinewood is a staple but the Rain gutter Regatta is a good outside Summertime Pack Activity. The boys build catamaran and race them using a straw and their lung power to push it down the 10 rain gutter. For this event the boys will be able to pick from premade catamarans and experience the fun without the expense or need to build their own boats. FISHING DERBY with SO JERSEY BASS FISHERMAN - Like to Fish? Ever fish off a pier at the Delaware River? Now you can with the help of the So Jersey Bass Fisherman! Fishing will occur all day. They will supply the gear and bait, you just bring the patience. Location for Fishing Derby is west of the stadium along the Delaware River. PSE&G WIRES AND FIRES DEMO - Public Service & Gas Company will provide a fun interactive demonstration about the power of electricity and safety, around downed wires. Come watch poor Scotty Squirrel (stuffed model) as he accidently touches downed live wires! Zap!! This demonstration will be held outside the stadium on Penn Street, near the main entrance to the stadium which is on the corner of Penn St. and Delaware Ave. NO TENT STAKES ALLOWED. 13 BOY SCOUT/CREW ACTIVITIES LOCATION: WEST OF THE STADIUM BETWEEN STADIUM AND THE RIVER. The Scouting Activities are providing numerous opportunities during the camporee for scouts to experience (Science, Technology, Engineering Math).To learn more about the STEM award for scouts go to the following link. Planned Activities: DON T BLOW ME AWAY Scouts will be challenged to keep the colored ball on tray BOTTLE STACKER Scouts will be requested to pull dollar bills from between bottles NUT STACKER Scouts will be challenged to stack 6-10 nuts on a provided stick PYRAMID OF CUPS Scouts will be requested to stack cups in a pyramid in a set period of time TIC-TAC-TOE Scouts will play tic-tac-toe launching ping pong balls and water filled cups CATAPULT ASSAULT Scouts will use a Camporee furnished catapult to storm a castle from the past. GO FISHING Scouts will go fishing for multi shaped and weighted objects OBSTACLE COURSE Low Ropes Course elements like All Aboard, Islands, Trolleys, Whale Watch, Acid River and TP Shuffle will be part of the challenge SOCCER CHALLENGE Scouts will control robots in a space-age soccer match TANK WAR Scouts will use robots in a battle challenge and a control challenge SPACE EXPLORATION Scouts will have the opportunity to design, build and launch Air Powered rockets, materials will be provided. There will also be a Water Bottle Rocket launch, scouts who provide empty (Qty:2) 2- Liter plastic bottles will be able to design and launch Water Rockets from our NASA approve launch site. 14 SOLAR WORLD Scouts will have experiences capturing and measuring solar energy and seeing how energy demand can be met. TECHNOLOGY Scouts will be given material to build one of several truss design(s) and use a structural tester to measure how much weight causes failure. Scouts will weigh their truss and determine the most cost-effective truss design for a specified load. ENGINEERING BLAST CAR Scouts will experience the Blast Car phenomenon! There will be NASCAR approved cars available for scouts to race. The two types of cars provided are Air Blast Car and the popular CO2 Blast Car. SCOOSBALL Modeled after the popular game Foosball, this event is sure to get your team building skills a good test. Scouts will make teams of 6 or 8 scouts. Scouts/Crews will play as human Foosball figures battling to get the ball to the goal. BOY SCOUT / CREW ACTIVITIES General Information: MERIT BADGE- There will be a merit badge tent for merit badge counselors to meet with scouts. The tent will have a sign up board notifying scouts which counselors are available and times. CITIZENSHIP IN THE NATION- will be conducted at the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia. Partial will be needed, #3- Be ready to discuss. Depart from front gate at 8:00AM in Class A uniform. RADIO- This will take place at the JOTA tent inside Campbell s Park, behind third base on second level. Partial #7 will be completed. This River Jam Camporee is a fun filled three day activity, not a merit badge forum. There are no learning and training materials for the scouting program provided. Troops/Crews who want to use the Camporee program to satisfy merit badge requirements, discuss with your Troop/ Crew. NO TENT STAKES ALLOWED. All tents must be free standing. 15 EVENING ENTERTAINMENT There s one thing Scouts love more than being entertained and that s being the entertainment. Scouts love to perform. Tapping into that energy and desire, get ready for the ultimate talent show Garden State Council s Got Talent Saturday Night Oct. 19 th. Both Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts will be auditioning over the summer, hoping to get a coveted invitation to perform at Saturday night s big show. Skits, musical acts, and perhaps a crazy talent or two will be competing for prize money that will be awarded to their pack or troop. A panel of esteemed, neutral judges will be watching and rating the acts on the night of the show. Acts will be judged in categories such as best Cub skit, best Scout skit, best musical group, best solo act, and more. WIN BIG MONEY PRIZES FOR YOUR ORGANIZATION.
