4 CAMPOREE OVERVIEW The Garden State Council Plan B Camporee will have the same exciting combination of demonstrations, entertainment and badges, as was planned for the Camden Waterfront RIVERJAM CAMPOREE, but these activities will be at the Pine Hill Scout Reservation. The opportunities to camp one or two nights on the Battleship USS New Jersey, visit the NJ Adventure Aquarium, or Hike over the Ben Franklin Bridge to visit the National Constitution Center will of course not be available. This event will provide activities for Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts in a three day outdoor camping event. The capacity is now limited to the capacity of Camp Pine Hill. There is one very important difference with the new venue; each unit must provide and prepare their own food. To reserve you place at Pine Hill, all you have to do is send an message directly to the Garden State Council Activities Committee at: activities@gardenstatescouting.org advising the Committee as to your unit s desire to attend and providing the Committee with your unit number and how many Scouts and adults will be attending as well as attaching a unit event roster. All units that plan on attending MUST register for this event by midnight Friday, October 11, Registrations for the PHSR event will only be accepted via e- mail to the Activities Committee and will NOT be accepted at either Council office. Reservations will NOT BE ACCEPTED after the above cutoff time! COST AND SPECIALS There is no campsite fees, and there are no special fees. This is a cost free event to celebrate the first Council-Wide camping event for the new Garden State Council. MORE INFO ABOUT PINE HILL SCOUT RESERVATION Set your GPS for 168 Watsontown-New Freedom Rd. UNIFORMS Scouts and leaders are expected to be dressed in Class A uniform for the following activities: * opening & closing ceremonies, * religious services, * evening show, For all other activities, Scouts and leaders may dress in Class B uniform. 4

5 PARKING AND DROP OFF OF GEAR Parking will be in the Cub Field parking lot only. This is a large open field easily seen from Co. Rd Entrance to the Cub Field Parking lot is at the intersection of Watsontown-New Freedom Rd (Co. Rd. 691) and Carriage Stop Drive. Set your GPS for 168 Watsontown-New Freedom Rd. Due to the large number of campers and cars expected, upon arrival you will be directed to a specific area to park. Cars in Camp: Please realize that our primary goal is the safety of all pedestrians in camp. The speed limit in camp is a MAXIMUM of 5 MPH. Units with trailers may keep their trailer and vehicle at their site provided they are coupled together. If uncoupled, the vehicle is to be taken to the upper parking lot. The only exception is a medical need, which must be cleared through staff at time of check-in at camp. After Friday night check in, no cars will be permitted into the camping area until checkout on Sunday. Gear Drop off will be allowed at the campsite, but only one car per unit will be allowed to drive into the campsite at one time. No vehicles can be left parked at the campsite. Units with trailers may keep their trailer and vehicle at their site provided they are coupled together. If uncoupled, the vehicle is to be returned to the parking lot. Trailers will not be permitted to stay on the Cub Field. Before leaving your home base, pack as much gear into one car as possible, so all cars do not have to drive into the campsite area. One gear drop off PASS will be provided per unit. CHECK IN PROCEDURES 1. Park all cars in the Cub Field Parking lot only. Do not enter the PHSR gate until you have checked in. 2. Check in will be at the PHSR gate at the Cub parking lot. 3. One car may drive to the campsite with gear at a time. That car will have a gear drop off PASS. If a second car needs to drop off more gear, the first car must come out and give the pass to the second. 4. Trailers with gear Units with trailers may keep their trailer and vehicle at their site provided they are coupled together. If uncoupled, the vehicle is to be returned to the parking lot. Trailers are NOT permitted to stay on the Cub Field. 5. Campsite Assignment will be given at check-in, based on the numbers you registered for the Plan B Camporee. You may need to share a campsite with another unit. You will be notified if this applies to your unit. Please leave space for others in your campsite. 6. Individual Check In & Out If you are expecting Scouts to come IN or OUT of camp during the day on Saturday, they must check in or out at the Security vehicle near the PHSR gate. The Scout, the parent and the unit leader all must be present to check a scout in and out. Check Out Procedures 5

6 1. ALL CAMPSITES MUST BE INSPECTED BY CAMP STAFF BEFORE YOU LEAVE. 6

7 SAFETY AND SECURITY The Plan B Camporee will have roving security patrols at night. Certified EMT staff will be on duty during the event. There will be a central command center located at the Cub Field Gate, and they will dispatch FIRST AID, SECURITY, SAFTY personnel for any emergency call The BUDDY SYSTEM will be used during the Camporee. All Scouts must travel at least in pairs (2 Scouts). Neither Cub or Boy Scouts may travel alone day or night. UNIT LEADERS must make sure 1. Medical form are on hand for all in attendance. 2. All adults are aware of and follow the BSA Youth Protection Policy. 3. Anyone found in disregard of BSA Youth Protection Policy will be removed from camp! GROUND FIRES Ground fires are not permitted anywhere in camp. There will be several barrels cut in half that may be used in the Cub Field, and all campsites have a half barrel. CAMPOREE STAFF HEADQUARTERS Camp staff headquarters will be at Anderson Lodge. OFF LIMITS CROCKETT CAMPSITE is under construction, therefore it is off limits to everyone in camp. Announce this to your unit. CRACKER BARRELS The Cracker Barrels will be held in the dining hall. All units are required to send one only, adult leader to each Cracker Barrel. Important information will be distributed at these meetings. RELIGIOUS SERVICES Catholic, Jewish, and non-sectarian services will be provided. It is expected that all campers attend. CLASS A uniform is expected for religious services. 7

9 JAMBOREE ON THE AIR (JOTA) This activity will be presented by the Radio Club of Burlington County, the Radio Club of Southern New Jersey and GSC Troop 811 as well as the Tabernacle Office of Emergency Management and they will work with Scouts and Scouters of all ages to connect with Scouts and HAM radio enthusiast around the nation and around the world. The radio transmitters will be will operate from 12 PM Saturday, throughout the night to 7 AM on Sunday. At night, 10 PM 7 AM, Cub Scouts may only visit the JOTA tent with a parent. Boy Scouts may visit the JOTA tent during all operational hours, but must attend with a buddy. JOTA will be located in a large tent on the Cub Field. All are encouraged to get on the air and get in contact with the world. TRADING POST The Trading Post will be at the rear of the Dining Hall. Friday 7:00 PM 9:00 PM Saturday 10:00 AM Noon Saturday 1:00 PM 4:00 PM LOST AND FOUND There will be one central LOST AND FOUND, at the trading post. ELECTRONIC GAMES ETC. It is strongly suggested that electronic games not be brought to the event. Items lost or stolen or broken are the responsibility of the owner. TENTING All tents, tarps, and camping equipment must be provided by the unit. Multiple small units may be camping within the same Pine Hill campsite. FOOD Each unit must bring their own food and prepare it in the campsite. The Saturday lunch meal should require very little preparation, to allow the Scout to get back to the activities. 9

12 CUB SCOUT ACTIVITIES There are multiple activities suitable for Cub Scouts being offered throughout the weekend. Most activities will be held at the Cub Pavilion and Cub Field. Further location and instructions will be available at cracker barrel. LEATHER PROJECT - Scouts will be able to make a leather keepsake for this event. Materials and instruction are provided by the camporee staff. The project will take approximately minutes and will be limited to ten boys at one time. STEM AWARD - Scouts will begin work on the STEM award BSA s newest Science Award. STEM is an acronym for Science, Technology, Engineering and Math. The sessions will last approximately 30 minutes long and will be limited to 20 boys per session. NECKERCHIEF SLIDES - Scouts will make a commemorative 2013 celebration neckerchief slide. Project should take 5 10 minutes. JAMBOREE ON THE AIR - This activity will allow Scouts, both Cub and Boy Scouts to connect with other Scouts and folks around the world. The radio transmitters will be set up in the large JOTA tent located on the Cub Field and will be running from noon on Saturday to 8 am on Sunday. See page 8 for more detail. CYBER CHIP -Today's youth are spending more time than ever using digital media for education, research, socializing, and fun. To help families and volunteers keep youth safe while online, the Boy Scouts of America introduces the Cyber Chip. In developing this exciting new tool, the BSA teamed up with content expert NetSmartz, part of the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children and training expert for many law enforcement agencies. NetSmartz has created a Scouting portal showcasing Cyber Chip resources, including grade-specific videos, for each level. Topics include cyber bullying, cell phone use, texting, blogging, gaming, and identity theft. Cubs and units will go over things to do with parents or den leaders, so they can earn the Cyber Chip award. ENGINEERING ACTIVITIES AND CATAPULTS - Webelos Scouts can work on the Engineering Activity Pin and all Scouts can learn to build miniature catapults and shoot at targets using them. RAINGUTTER REGATTA - Pinewood is a staple but the Rain gutter Regatta is a good outside Summertime Pack Activity. The boys build a catamaran and race them using a straw and their lung power to push it down the 10 rain gutter. For this event the boys will be able to pick from premade catamarans and experience the fun without the expense or need to build their own boats. FISHING DERBY with SO JERSEY BASS FISHERMAN - Like to Fish? Did you never catch a fish? Now you can with the help of the So Jersey Bass Fisherman! Fishing will occur all day. They will supply the gear and bait, you just bring the patience. Location for Fishing Derby is at the waterfront area. ARCHERY - Cubs will be able to test their bow & arrow skill with a certified range master. Located at the Archery Range. BB SHOOTING - Cubs will be able to test their BB Rifle skill with a certified range master. Located at the Rifle Range. PUMPKIN PAINTING - Small pumpkins will be available for painting. Located at the Cub Pavilion. 12

13 BOY SCOUT/CREW ACTIVITIES LOCATION: On the parade grounds by the OA Lodge near the flag pole area. The Scouting Activities are providing numerous opportunities during the camporee for scouts to experience (Science, Technology, Engineering Math).To learn more about the STEM award for scouts go to the following link. Meeting of Mayors: George Finan, (H) , will act as the chairman of the council of mayors. A meeting of the Mayors will be at 8:30 am Saturday. Planned Activities: DON T BLOW ME AWAY Scouts will be challenged to keep the colored ball on tray BOTTLE STACKER Scouts will be requested to pull dollar bills from between bottles NUT STACKER Scouts will be challenged to stack 6-10 nuts on a provided stick PYRAMID OF CUPS Scouts will be requested to stack cups in a pyramid in a set period of time TIC-TAC-TOE Scouts will play tic-tac-toe launching ping pong balls and water filled cups CATAPULT ASSAULT Scouts will use a Camporee furnished catapult to storm a castle from the past. GO FISHING Scouts will go fishing for multi shaped and weighted objects OBSTACLE COURSE Low Ropes Course elements like All Aboard, Islands, Trolleys, Whale Watch, Acid River and TP Shuffle will be part of the challenge SOCCER CHALLENGE Scouts will control robots in a space-age soccer match TANK WAR Scouts will use robots in a battle challenge and a control challenge 13

14 SPACE EXPLORATION Scouts will have the opportunity to design, build and launch Air Powered rockets, materials will be provided. There will also be a Water Bottle Rocket launch, scouts who provide empty (Qty:2) 2- Liter plastic bottles will be able to design and launch Water Rockets from our NASA approve launch site. SOLAR WORLD Scouts will have experiences capturing and measuring solar energy and seeing how energy demand can be met. TECHNOLOGY Scouts will be given material to build one of several truss design(s) and use a structural tester to measure how much weight causes failure. Scouts will weigh their truss and determine the most cost-effective truss design for a specified load. ENGINEERING BLAST CAR Scouts will experience the Blast Car phenomenon! There will be NASCAR approved cars available for scouts to race. The two types of cars provided are Air Blast Car and the popular CO2 Blast Car. SCOOSBALL Modeled after the popular game Foosball, this event is sure to get your team building skills a good test. Scouts will make teams of 6 or 8 scouts. Scouts/Crews will play as human Foosball figures battling to get the ball to the goal. JAMBOREE ON THE AIR - This activity will allow Scouts, both Cub and Boy Scouts to connect with other Scouts and folks around the world. The radio transmitters will be set up on the stadium-concourse next to the carousel and will be running all day and night. See page 8 for more detail. BOY SCOUT / CREW ACTIVITIES General Information: CITIZENSHIP IN THE NATION Will be offered only as partial. Requirement No. 3, 6, 8 require preparation at home and need to be brought with you to the Plan B Camporee. Requirement No. 2 is not available at Plan B Camporee. RADIO- This will take place at the JOTA tent. MERIT BADGE CARDS Merit badge cards are to be provided by the Scoutmaster. This Plan B Camporee is a fun filled three day activity, not a merit badge forum. There are no learning and training materials for the scouting program provided. Troops/Crews who want to use the Camporee program to satisfy merit badge requirements, discuss with your Troop/ Crew. 14
