That usually is t huge ews, except for the fact that the team has struggled sice the 1980s ad with secod-year coach Aaro Sepulveda at the helm the future looks bright for the Aztecs. Sepulveda came to the team after the school year was fiished more tha a year ago, meaig he missed out o valuable time to get his team ready for the 2012 campaig. But that did t stop him from gettig a competitive squad out there o the field. We struggled, Sepulveda said. Last year was a period i which we were buildig a foudatio. Whe I arrived i late Jue, we had to get thigs situated by establishig a weight traiig program, a coditioig program. We were tryig to become acquaited with the players, become familiar with the culture of the school. We defiitely struggled, but the players had good spirit, they did t quit. He added Keppel brought its ow challeges. It s tough whe you start ew procedures, he said. It s tough for ay coach, especially whe the program has bee strugglig for three decades. I try to explai that may are elderly, or ewcomers to this coutry. Some may ever have drive a car util they were forced to whe they moved here because of the lack of adequate public trasportatio ad peer pressure. But I have my complaits about drivers i other commuities. I frequetly drive o the 210, 605 ad 10 freeways. Boy you ca write a book by just listig the drivig habits of those motorists. Drivers o local ad eighborig surface streets have plety of usafe habits. I thought I might list them ad see what kid of reactio I get. Drivers make right turs ad do t stop, eve if it is agaist a red light or a boulevard stop. Drivers who drive through a crosswalk, eve though pedestrias are crossig. Drivers who blow right through a cotrolled itersectio, eve though the yellow cautio light is turig to red. Drivers who are makig right turs but are stopped for pedestrias ad block two laes their origial lae ad the turig lae. Cars that double-parked to pick-up or drop off someoe, eve though there is a parkig space earby. Motorists who do t slow dow i school zoes ad igore warig sigs. Drivers who make U-turs o ay street, at ay time. The there are pedestrias, both youg ad old, who thik they are protected by a ivisible wall, whe it is just a white lie paited o the street. Whe crossig a street, may of them just step off the curb without lookig. If a driver has bee waitig for his tur after watchig cross traffic, this will drive them uts. I ve see people walk across the street, agaist a red light because a tur arrow is blockig some of the cars comig i their directio. I ve see some people ru diagoally across a major itersectio, yellig ad wavig just to catch a bus. The there are distracted walkers. These are people who are talkig o their cell phoes or have their ears plugged ad coected to a Ipod. Just like distracted drivers, these people have less tha 50% of their attetio focused o their dagerous surroudigs. Freeway drivers are a completely differet matter. There are slow drivers ad fast drivers both equally dagerous. I m ot a fast driver, but I certaily go faster tha 55 miles per hour o the freeway. I ve bee caught behid drivers goig 50 ad 55 mph o a fast lae. That s a hazardous situatio waitig for a accidet to happe whe other drivers chage laes to get away from the slow driver. My least favorite drivers are lae switchers, usually i hopped up little cars. They ca t stad to be behid aother car. So, they zip back ad forth switchig laes to get i frot of other cars. They make frequetly lae chages squeezig betwee cars ad seldom use their tur sigals. A lot of times, they are drivig i pairs, icreasig the risk i this situatio. My worst experiece is with big SUVs or pick-up trucks with macho types behid the wheel particularly o the 210 Freeway. If you are drivig at 75 mph, they wat to go faster. If you speed up to 80 mph, it still is ot fast eough. They wat you to move out of their way. Sometimes you do, sometimes you do t move to aother lae. Havig taught for 15 years at Rice Elemetary School i Rosemead, Alice Nishimoto has received umerous grats from Natioal Edowmet of the Humaities to study at various places i the East Coast durig the past summers.
