8 Up until this pint my time within the SRC has mstly been spent learning the rpes and lking twards O-week Activities. S far my plan is lking smething like this. MON Tues Wed Thurs Fri - Barrel at Hunter St campus - Night market at the nursing campus - Scieties day at the main campus - TBA at either Med schl r Main campus again. - Bands at the cn. The reasning behind setting up the structure like this is that it creates mre inclusiveness thrughut all the campuses. It als give the first years a chance t see campuses they therwise may nt have a chance t see. I thught Hunter St has always been a great place t thrw barrels and culd be a chance t have ne f the legendary arts barrels f ld. Nursing campus is quite small and thus I m nt sure wuld have the capacity t hld a larger advent, that being said it may be the perfect place t thrw a night market. It als wuld help the inclusiveness f nurses as in the past they have been left ut f alt f the TUU activities. Scietys day cannt be held anywhere ther than the ref steps. lets face it! Thursday at the med schl wuld be amazing. I feel it wuld have t be quite a tame evening as I m nt sure the Med higher ups wuld k anything mre. But nt being familiar with the campus myself I'm lking fr input int the srt f activities that culd be held here. The cn des music, in fact the cn is music. S lets have a gig there. I m thinking three lcal bands and a larger interstate band. The line up I d lve t see wuld lk like this 1. Lincln le fevre

11 SRC Suth Reprt 14 January 2015 Ariel Jhn Wells Abriginal and Trres Strait Islander Officer Thughts n Psitin The psitin f Abriginal and Trres Strait Islander Officer is quite new t the TUU with 2014 being the first year it has existed, it is fr this reasn that increasing awareness and enhancing expsure will be incredibly imprtant ver the next year. This expsure and awareness shuld fcus n bth natinal and reginal issues as many f the issues ccurring natinally have reginal significance n the lives f Abriginal and Trres Strait Islander students at the University f Tasmania. Fcus shuld als be placed n the prfile f the Abriginal and Trres Strait Islander Officer psitin and the Abriginal and Trres Strait Islander Cllective that infrm their decisins. Events and Campaigns Planned Belw is a list f the events and campaigns that are planned fr the year. The exact frm they are t take is still under develped. I have gtten a great deal by purchasing the flag secnd hand frm Aunty Brenda Hdge the Elder in residence at the Hbart Riawunna Centre. The flag retails fr $750 plus delivery but I have negtiated t buy her secndhand flag fr nly $300. Justificatin: The purchase f a large Abriginal flag will enable increased awareness t many issues and dates relevant t Abriginal and Trres Strait Islander students. It will als give greater expsure t the TUU SRC Suth Abriginal and Trres Strait Islander Officer and the Hbart Abriginal and Trres Strait Islander Cllective. Justificatin: The ability t fly the Abriginal flag n the Hbart TUU building will be incredibly beneficial fr increasing awareness and expsure surrunding the events and campaigns run by the TUU SRC Suth Abriginal and Trres Strait Islander Officer. Justificatin: The Hbart Abriginal and Trres Strait Islander Cllective is intended t be a way fr the TUU SRC Suth Abriginal and Trres Strait Islander Officer t gain insight int the pinins f Abriginal and Trres Strait Islander students at the University f Tasmania and gain additinal supprt fr the events that are rganised. Items: Table, Table Clth, Member Merchandise (Wrist Bands, Drink Bttles, Key Hlders etc), Clthing fr Executive and Vlunteers Members t be wrn at events, Membership Cards, advertising / prmtinal and stall sign up incentives (fd and drink). Cst: up t $ Title: Meeting csts fr the first Hbart Abriginal and Trres Strait Islander Cllective Descriptin: Fd and Drink given t attendees f the first Hbart Abriginal and Trres Strait Islander Cllective meeting. Justificatin: Fd and drink is t be used as an incentive t get peple t attend the first Hbart Abriginal and Trres Strait Islander Cllective meeting. The first meeting is incredibly imprtant because if the cllective desn t attract enugh peple it will be unable t elect an executive which will ensure its failure and increase the difficulty t rganise and run events. Give a welcme speech at the rientatin fr internatinal students t intrduce myself and ptentially at: Faculty rientatins - I will have t get in cntact with the respective Faculty Advisrs and/r Internatinal Cmmittees(?) such as at the Law schl t see hw this can wrk. Accmmdatin Services 3. Set up a sign up stall at Clubs and Scieties day t reach ut t Internatinal Students' Cmmittee members thugh I'm nt sure if I'm allwed t d this. Questin/Suggestin: Des the TUU/SRC think that a "Buddy Mentring Prgram" is a gd idea? NUS Natinal Cnference Last mnth frm the 7-12 f December, I attended the NUS Natinal Cnference as a TUU delegate. As anticipated, the Gvernments Higher Refrms was a ht tpic and ne which was passinately debated fr. It was unanimus that we did need t cntinue campaigning against deregulatin. I have spken t Heidi and Ariel abut writing an article t Tgtaus fr the need t cntinue the campaign (the gvernment release f the Mid-Year financial reprt des mean that gvernment may use the budget situatin as an added justificatin fr deregulatin). I did get the pprtunity t speak t the incming President Rse Steel and Educatin Officer Hannah Smith, and several ther ffice bearers. I hpe these cntacts will be t the benefit f the TUU and NUS in Tasmania. I will let Ariel cntinue with a mre detailed intrductin t the SRC Althugh Gen Sec, I feel it is mre apprpriate fr Ariel t be discussing NUS issues. UTAS Develpments Educatin Frum: Last Friday, (Jan 2 nd ) Myself, Heidi and Ariel had a meeting (predminantly NUS), thugh we did need t agree n rganising an Educatin Frum. Befre Christmas, we were infrmed f Majr structural changes and cuts t the divisin f

21 Students and Educatin (David Sadler s Department) - the full details haven t been released yet ask Heidi fr mre infrmatin. Hwever this is significant, and we are still wrking ut hw it culd affect students, and have suggested that we rganise an Educatin Frum in May, and are planning early. I d nt knw if these changes will affect the launch f the Breadth Units yet. Breadth Units: The Breadth unit prgramme is n its way t be launched. Three units were apprved last year, and 8 are n track this year (up t 50 breath units by 2016/2017). As new and particularly returning reps will knw there has been cntrversy abut this, including the rushed curriculum, dminance f UTAS management in units and general pace in which the prgram was implemented (less than 18 mnths). There was a feature article in Tgatus written by Jey Crawfrd, and frum last year which aimed at giving the university, a chance at explaining the purpse f the units. Thugh, the main issue at the mment seems t be the lack f cmmunicatin abut the prgramme, given t the student ppulatin. This is particularly significant, given the animsity in sme elements f the student ppulatin, twards the units. We were asked t help launch the Breadth Units, and this was discussed at the State Cuncil Meeting (where this was discussed). The main pint is that we might face criticism in explaining the units, as it culd give the impressin that we supprt it The SRC will be kept updated n this in the cming weeks. Fr mre infrmatin: and SRC Wrk NDA 25 th March: A date has been set fr March 25 th fr the first NUS Natinal Day f Actin fr the year, by the incming Educatin Officer Hannah Smith. We shuld start wrk n this sn, given that March with O-Week events is ging t be a packed mnth i.e. including the NDA in the cunter curse guide, the first issue f Tgatus, at O-Week. Ariel wuld take leadership f this and we shuld get a wrking grup/cmmittee t get nt this early. I have als placed a financial mtin fr the NDA: Mtin That the SRC apprve up t $500 fr the first NUS Natinal Day f Actin fr 2015 March 25 th The mney wuld g twards prmtinal material - including advertising, cmmunicatin, and bus transprt (fr satellite campuses) - $160, and pssible fd i.e. sup. Educatin Cmmittee Hping t set this up befre the Semester starts. I spke t Gerge Hlgate (last year), in regards t Sciety s membership, and I will try t prmte this at sciety s cuncil when it

22 meets, and am ptimistic. Thugh, the structure and membership f the grup may change depending n wh is interested. Mre abut this will be cming sn. TUU Educatin Netwrk Last year, I started a Facebk Grup with the aim f including brader debate abut campus educatin issues. I wuld like t change it t pst mre cntent abut Higher Educatin issues generally, and change the name t TUU Educatin Frum. Other Grievance/Cmplaint t be discussed in meeting University Cmmittees I have spken t Heidi abut this and depending n my timetable (I dn t knw if I get accepted int Law yet) and wuld be interested in sitting n 3-6 university cmmittees. I wuld strngly encurage Student Reps, t sit n UTAS cmmittees. They are a gd experience, and will set yu up arund the university, including gaining cntacts and netwrks.
