2 Your Invitation The AusIMM is pleased to once again host the annual International Uranium Conference, which is entering its eighth year. This year s event will be held in Darwin, Northern Territory at the Holiday Inn Esplanade Hotel on June Since the last AusIMM International Uranium Conference in 2012, held in Adelaide last year, the industry continues to struggle from the aftermath of the natural disaster at Fukashima in Japan and in some cases a softening of public sentiment, with regard to the future use of nuclear power in some jurisdictions. The good news is that the tide is once again changing in the largest growth areas such as China, where the majority of new demand will be required. China has recently restarted their aggressive new build programs, which, combined with other new builds, will ensure growing and robust uranium requirements going forward. In addition, the recent change of government in Japan appears to be improving the likelihood of more restarts in the short-to medium-term of the nearly 50 idled reactors in that country. On top of this the state of Queensland in Australia has embarked down a path supporting future uranium development and is following in the footsteps of Western Australia, South Australia and the Northern Territory. Recently, New South Wales approved the initiation of uranium exploration in their state, which further supports an undeniable change in political sentiment in this country in the majority of the states and territories. These positive events around the world, and in Australia, send a clear signal that momentum is once again changing in favour of the uranium sector and now is the time to position and not miss out as opportunities present. The organising committee believes that this year s event will continue the fine tradition of providing delegates with value for time and money spent by providing a one-stop forum for staying in touch with the state of play of the industry, learning new skills and keeping networks up-to-date with a wide variety of professionals involved with this sector. We feel that this event will surely not disappoint in this regard. Every year, the organising committee is pleased to see the strong repeat delegate support as well as the strong support from our sponsors and host mining companies, which are always more than willing to assist with providing access to fantastic tours of Australia s several world-class operations. This year is no different and without this support this event would not be possible. The main focus of the formal program includes numerous technically-based presentations, which cover a wide variety of the topics from exploration, mining, geology, processing, production, health, safety, indigenous relations, environment and nuclear safeguards. This year, tours will be held at Energy Resources Australia s (ERA) Ranger Mine and the Northern Territory Government s Rum Jungle Mine. Book early for these full-day tours as available seats always go fast and are limited. Thank you to our sponsors Conference Proceedings Note Pads & Pens Media Supporters Thank you to our exhibitors In addition to the formal program and tours there will be a number of social functions, including the annual Conference Dinner, which this year will be held at the SkyCity Darwin Casino. Recognising the importance of continuing public education and transparency, there will also be a Public Information Session held during the program. The Public Information Session continues to be free to give the wider public and delegates the opportunity to hear from experts that attend the event to address key industry and community concerns and explain how risks are managed and how best practice is applied. In closing, we invite you to visit Darwin and the beautiful Northern Territory and be part of the 2013 conference, which we are proud to say is Australia s best industry uranium conference. Don t miss out as changes in the sector are in the wind! Sincerely, Mark S Chalmers FAusIMM Conference Chair, The AusIMM International

ERA has an excellent track record of reliably supplying customers. Uranium has been mined at Ranger for three decades and is one of only three mines in the world to produce in excess of tonnes of uranium oxide. The Ranger mine is eight kilometres east of Jabiru and 260 kilometres east of Darwin, located in Australia s Northern Territory. The Ranger mine tour will broadly include a visit to the Pit 3 viewing platform, a drive around the processing plant, an overview of the water management system including the Brine Concentrator treatment facility and a visit to the Ranger 3 Deeps exploration decline and exploration facilities. T2: Rum Jungle Mine Tour Thursday 13 June 2013 The Rum Jungle Mine site was mined between 1954 and 1971 and comprises an area of approximately 655 hectares. Key features of the site include three rehabilitated waste rock dumps, two open pit lakes and a backfilled open pit. Mining and processing operations that occurred at the site have led to significant environmental impacts, primarily the generation of acid and metalliferous drainage. Rehabilitation works were completed at the site during the 1980s and monitoring has continued since this time. The current project (under a National Partnership Agreement between the Northern Territory and Australian governments) will inform an improved rehabilitation strategy for the site that aims to provide a more permanent reduction in environmental impacts by adopting leading practice rehabilitation methods. Time: 8.00 am 3.30 pm Cost: A$143 per person. Numbers: Minimum 10 Maximum 21 Includes: Transport and lunch. Notes: All bookings are subject to site approval and attendance is at the discretion of the site. To register for these tours, please complete the appropriate section of the registration form. WORKSHOP WK 1: Emerging Issues in Radiation Protection Relevant to the Uranium Mining Industry Thursday 13 June 2013 ARPANSA will facilitate an interactive workshop addressing recent developments in radiation protection related to occupational exposure and environmental protection in the uranium mining and mineral sands mining/milling industries. The introduction will cover the latest recommendations of the International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP) and the new IAEA Basic Safety Standards. The detailed sessions will cover aspects of occupational dose assessment (including the Australian National Radiation Dose Register (ANRDR) and dose estimation for exposure to radon progeny), and protection of wildlife from ionizing radiation including information on the ERICA integrated approach. These detailed sessions will include practical demonstrations of the use of a number of tools using scenarios relevant to the uranium mining industry.
