Doug s grandson also presented Doug with a To Onga (ring) and each told the story of his family, and there pathway. Cambridge Lions Peter Knox John bottom left) Editor Peter Knox Balloons Over Waikato Chairman John Makgill Tonight a very good friend of Lions passed away after a short illness. John Makgill was Chairman of Balloons Over Waikato, brother of Lion Hugh Makgill (Morrinsville Lions) and a very good friend of myself. John has given so much support to Lions and through his stewardship arranged the opportunity for Lions to be the Balloons Over Waikato Charity of Choice. That arrangement allowed us to make a donation to the Waikato Bay of Plenty Cancer Society s Lions Lodge last weekend of $25,000 John was actively involved in many organisations and will be sadly missed. Our thoughts are with you Lion Hugh in the loss of a precious brother. (Photo: Reporoa s Lion Ritchie Keith Rewarded for Great Service At last Thursday s Reporoa Lions Club tea night held at the Reporoa College Lion Richie Keith was honoured with a Life Membership of the club. Richie joined in 1989, has held all offices within the club in the last 24 years and his wisdom is often sought when big decisions are required. With his wife Gill they have contributed so much to the Reporoa community on many fronts. Richie was totally surprised with the award and obviously very moved in its acceptance. The evening was also an opportunity for the Lions to bring along guests as prospective members and Cambridge Lions invaded the meeting with Peter Knox leading the charge with his noisy chainsaw. Tail twisting resulted in $90 being donated to Huntingtons Disease Youth Organisation. A most enjoyable and rewarding evening of Lions, partners & friends. Reporoa Lions Kit Gainsford I have to say it was a great night and thanks to Reporoa for their wonderful hospitality (even though they hadn t prepared for it). Ritchie is an amazing Lion and it was a real thrill to be their to witness the honour of Life Membership of his club being bestowed on him, Congratulations Ritchie. (Editor) Taupo Pakeke Lions Honours One Of Its Own Graham Mock was recently awarded a Melvin Jones Fellowship by his fellow Lions. This was presented by District Governor Richard Norris at a recent PAKEKE Lions meeting in the Taupo RSA. This is considered the highest award available within the New Zealand Lions fraternity. A Past President, Secretary and currently Bulletin Editor of his club, Graham was previously honoured with a Life Membership of Lions International, and a Life Membership of the New Zealand Lions, Lloyd Morgan Charitable Trust. The Waikato/Bay of Plenty Lions honoured him with an International Presidents Letter of Commendation. This was presented by the then International President Sid Scrubbs III, at the opening of the Cancer Society s Lions Lodge in Graham is a long time Taupo resident and been involved in many activities in the town over the past 50 years including Jaycees, Probus, Sea Scouts, Vintage Cars and Rugby. He was also involved with the introduction of the Half Ironman event in Taupo. Graham has helped run the Christmas Parade for many years and he is an enthusiastic driver of the Lions Train on the Domain which he hopes to be able to enjoy for many more years to come. 2 Do you remember that Club in 202L that is the 1 st in the District to see the sunrise each day? We haven t made a lot of noise lately, but we sure have been busy, and that is going to continue for some time. We provided $14000 to extend the Blokes Shed building at Peria House Rest home in Opotiki, with thanks to L.M.L.C.C.T. for funding assistance. Our large print local phone book/ directory is now completed and being sold. We are running a Giant Pumpkin competition coming up in April, so need to get seeds planted now. Assisted with the Pink Ribbon appeal street collection. We have 4 X 2 seater wooden seats being made to be installed at TECT Park. Provided Marshalls for the Motu Challenge Multi Sport event in Opotiki. Preparation of our 2014 Prize Calendar is under way. Coming up:- For World Service Day we are Entertaining our Senior Citizens, and providing them with afternoon tea on Sunday 20 th October. Assist with Driver Reviver Stop in the Waioeka Gorge on Labour Day. Provide and Man / Woman the refreshment tent at the local Rodeo, and sponsor Prize for Local Bull Ride. Run Christmas Raffle. Host International Youth Camp Attendees in Opotiki for a Cultural stopover at a local Marae. Fundraising to assist a local family to take child to the U.S.A. for Life changing operation costing $ Planning under way for Sand Sculpture Competition at Waiotahi Beach in New Year. I just hope we have time to open all the goodies that Santa Claus is going to bring us. With all of this activity happening, it is just as well that we inducted two new Members last Thursday Night. We are pleased to welcome new Members :- Frances Abraham and Wendy Schutz, (Two more ladies in our Club) Membership Chair I.P.P. Opotiki Lions Club have Inducted another New Member, at our World Service Day Function today. We are pleased to welcome Hugh Rankin into our Club. (this makes 3 for October.) Induction was once again carried out by Membership Chair I.P.P. Glenda John. (This was in front of 100 Guests) 2ndV.D.G. Jim Towersey. North Hamilton Lions Charter On the 13th October 2013 at 2.10pm the LCI Charter was formally handed over by 1st International Vice President Joe Preston, to the North Hamilton Lions Club, President, Leigh Blissett. The club Charted with 31 members. There are three probable recruits in waiting. This was a splendid day, being the culmination of five years of endeavour, and 18 months of planning, using a strategy to find the community committed persons that will catalyse the formation of a Lions service club to meet the needs of their society. In parallel to the charter function organising the club planned and executed a major fund raiser held the week following the charter hand over function.the project a fund raising quiz, auction and entertainment evening, held 19th October, was targeted to raise $18,000. This was the moneys needed to complete the fund raising to purchase a re-locatable, self- contained and serviced water safe learn to swim pool. Initial analysis, indicates that this target has been exceeded. It is also an example of what can be achieved by an enthusiastic team of committed Lions. There are many people to thank for the success of the chartering of this new club and its first big project. Thank you for the support of IPDG Sara Patrick, DG Richard Norris, New Club Formation coordinator David Eddy, Zone Chair, Bill Crook, Previous Zone Chair, Trevor Scott, PID Lucy Armstrong, Margaret Brasting, fellow Guiding Lion and GMT chair, all those cabinet and club members that attended the charter function. We extend a special thanks to 1st International Vice President, Joe Preston who formally handed the Charter to Charter President, Leigh Blissett and his band of Charter Members. Also thanks to those accompanying Joe, Council Chair PDG Joyce Raven, PIDs, PDGs, Zone chairs, Presidents, club representatives, and Children, who attended the charter hand over luncheon. A special thank you is expressed for the North Hamilton Charter Lions, the coordination committee and those that were the key players: Principal, Brian Sheedy who was the catalyst to beginning this new club, and President Leigh Blissett who has steered this new venture to the successful conclusion it has become. From a personal experience, this had been one of the most enlightening experiences I ve had in Lions. Guiding Lion Andrew Malloch Apology to Lions of District 202L Due to concern of some Senior Lions expressing their disappointment concerning the communications re the Chartering of the North Hamilton Lions Club I offer the following apology. Due to the charter function venue being of limited capacity invitations were sent to cabinet members, the two immediate clubs, the new chartered Club and the Sponsoring club members, plus clubs in Zone 1 & 2 & 3. (Clubs close to Hamilton) The presence of the 1 st International Vice President was a late addition to proceedings which required some urgent additions to the planning committee. In parallel the North Hamilton Club was planning a major event, over a very short time span that was held the following week, last evening. My apology to those that felt left out. It is now time to congratulate the new club on their chartering, and to wish them well for their future endeavours, details in the 202-L directory section. I m absolutely certain, visitations are welcome.

Guiding Lion Andrew Malloch Te Aroha Mountain Lions Book Fair Co-ordinator, Phillipa Davey, is counting down to this annual event in the club's calendar and with help from her husband, Mark, is getting the all important signs up in preparation for this major club fundraiser. With more books than ever this should prove a bumper book fair so the club hopes to see members from other local Lions Clubs coming along to bag a bargain. One of the spin offs from such an event is the friendships formed through working together throughout the year preparing for this important fundraiser and the wonderful support given by members husbands, many of whom are members of Te Aroha Lions Club or other local service clubs. To celebrate the importance of the service clubs that work together to serve the Te Aroha community, Te Aroha Mountain Lions Club members are hosting the annual Combined Services Dinner this year on Oct 23rd with Guest Speaker, Noela Vallis, founder and President of the Spinal Cord Society of New Zealand. Proceeds from the event will go towards the research work promoted by the society. Phone , 202L.glt@lionsclubs.org.nz or a.scholfield@xtra.co.nz GLT District Co-ordinator Alan Scholfield Life Membership to John Gossop Te Awamutu Lions Club recently recognised the service of John Glossop by awarding him a Life Membership of the Lloyd Morgan Lions Clubs Charitable Trust. The Lloyd Morgan Life Membership Award recognises outstanding service to the Lions organisation and the community at large by Lion John Glossop of Te Awamutu. Mr Glossop joined Te Awamutu Lions in 2005 and quickly became an active member in all club projects and activities. He took up leadership roles in various club committees and projects, including the annual Food & Wine Festivals and co-ordinating the work of the club s Kai Kart at National Field Days. He is a very dedicated club member who can be relied upon to complete all responsibilities he takes on. He has a particular skill in supporting and encouraging other members to also play their part in club projects. After completing a year as Vice-President, Mr Glossop became Te Awamutu Lions Club President in the Lions year. He then spent the following year as Immediate Past President in supporting and mentoring the new President and elected Board of the Club. Following the closure of Parawera School, John spearheaded a project that resulted in the playground from the closed Parawera School being relocated to Castleton Park by members of the Te Awamutu and Kihikihi Lions Clubs. This was a project that involved a lot of consultation and negotiation with the previous Board of Trustees of Parawera School, the Waipa District Council and also the companies and Lions members who actually carried out the work. Once the Playground project was completed John then initiated a new stage to the project that involved the sighting of two seats (one at Castleton Park and one adjacent to the children s playground by Te Awamutu Events Centre) as a memorial to two long-standing Te Awamutu Lions Club members (John Berry and Norm Martin) who recently passed away. The successful completion of these two projects was due to the sound leadership and dedication shown by John and the Te Awamutu Lions Club was thrilled to initiate the process for him to receive this well deserved award. 4 Update report on the Cancer Society s Lions Lodge fundraising appeal I re-visited the Lodge on Thursday morning (accompanied by President Maurice Roper of the East Hamilton Club who reinforced the Club s on-going support for the project) to have a cup of coffee with Lisa and the staff, and having banked the cheques I referred to earlier, I took the opportunity of re-presenting them, by including them in a cheque drawn on the project account along with additional funds previously banked and acknowledged in my last update. It was a real pleasure to have morning coffee with the staff of the Lodge. They are very caring and special people and all so thankful for the support from the members of our Lions Clubs! The visit by IVP Joe, DG Richard and the other Lions and partners last Sunday to the Lions Lodge was very good. Every time I visit I come away with an extraordinary feeling that this is SO RIGHT that we have committed ourselves to funding the project to the extent that we have. Lisa told us that it had been fully occupied the previous week, and that is not an isolated case! The Lodge is truly needed and the feedback from the residents is so positive! We have said it before and it is worth saying again Well Done Lions. Just keep on supporting the Lions Lodge project as the Ngaruawahia Club has continued to do by forwarding a cheque this week for $ towards the project. Many thanks Ngaruawahia - appreciated and you have now contributed $21, In one of my recent updates I advised that the Auditor is likely to contact Clubs asking for confirmation of the contributions made to the project. I understand requests have gone to many Clubs last week, and more are likely to go out this coming week. It will be very much appreciated if responses can be made as soon as possible so that we can then complete the review of the project s financial accounts. The visit by our 1 st International Vice President last Sunday was memorable especially as he presented the Charter to President Leigh of the new North Hamilton Lions Club. And the excitement continues as, on Thursday evening, I officiated at the induction of officers and members of our latest Leo Club. The Lions club of Greerton and particularly President Eugene must be congratulated on all their hard work which has resulted in the Aquinas College Leo Club. I wish President Alice, Vice President Millie, Secretary Lauren, Treasurer Sam and the 19 club members all well as they begin their journey in providing service under the Lions/Leo umbrella. It would appear that there is considerable interest from other Lions clubs and schools/colleges in the Bay of Plenty to establish more Leo clubs. So what are the benefits of sponsoring a Leo club? It increases your Lions Club s community exposure and attracts potential members; Energizes your Lions club and inspires members; Gives satisfaction of mentoring and helping today s youth and young adults to become better citizens and leaders in life. If you are interested in establishing a Leo Club in your area then please contact our District Advisor, PDG David Campbell, and contact me also as I am particularly interested in more clubs being set up. I believe this will give some real impetus into Lions in our District. On the visiting front my penultimate official visit as Avril and I attended a dinner meeting in Morrinsville one of the strongest and busiest clubs in our District. As well as informing International President Barry Palmer s message I was also delighted to thank the club for all the hard work they are putting in, together with Morrinsville Pakeke and Tahuna & Districts Lions clubs, to make our District Convention a great event that no Lion will want to miss. Look out for Convention committee members who will be out and about next month talking to clubs. Remember that this is the only Convention in New Zealand which IP Barry and Anne Palmer will be attending and you will be able to meet them personally. The Saturday night function looks to be a real humdinger as the band gets us into a Hoedown! You will be asked to park your vehicles at Campbell Park and buses will take you to a secret location even I do not know where it is!
