1 NOOZLETTA Lions 202L NEWS & VIEWS Week commencing 12th October 2014 Recipients: 1288 Please address all Noozletta items to: ISSUE # 515 Obituary for Tauranga Pakeke Lion Elsie Mills It is with sadness that we advise the passing of our Honoured Member, Elsie Mills who died on Sunday (5 October) just nine days short of her 100 th birthday. Our sympathies and thoughts go out to her family and friends on this sad occasion. Following the death of her husband, Lion James Mills, a member of Omokoroa Lions, Elsie moved to Tauranga, joining the Tauranga Pakeke Club in June Elsie s funeral was held on Friday 10 th October. President / Leo Advisor Tauranga Pakeke Lions Club Marlene Tau Noozletta Apology! I would like to sincerely apologise to all District 202L Lions for sending out Noozletta with addresses displayed. Unfortunately because of my location, I was using a foreign laptop, foreign windows and outlook versions and had a tenuous internet connection, so my usual fail safe set up failed. I can assure you that this will not happen again! Very Apologetic Noozletta Editor Lou Fielder. Thumbs Up to PCC Brian Hammond & Global Leadership Team Leader James Marris for an informative and enjoyable CEP Facilitator Training Day! Noozletta Editor Lou Fielder From Our District Governor s Desk For thirty-seven years Morrinsville Lions have organised a Lone Diners lunch and last Sunday I had the pleasure to attend. Expecting to be put to work serving at tables I was firmly put in my place and told I would be sitting amongst the more-than one hundred and fifty lone diners. It was a wonderful afternoon of fellowship, food and entertainment, and an honour to find out whether the diners had been before or not, and what they knew about Lions. It was a good icebreaker as most people I talked to opened up and chatted about their long life. Thank you Morrinsville Lions. I didn t have far to travel on Tuesday for my visit to Ohaupo Ngahinapouri Lions. They re a busy club working in their food caravan that is always in demand, they run an annual garage sale, and sponsor the monthly Ohaupo newsletter so their name is always out and about. Their community service includes the Faye Coxhead Memorial Trust and since its inception they have supported thirty-one youth - of whom two where present to tell us of their recent overseas achievements. Members are involved in my convention too, organising the Partners Tour - check the 202L website for registration forms and programme.

2 The following night I made an official visit to my own club Rosetown. It s quite different presenting to a group you know really well, and because I haven t been to a dinner meeting for a number of months it was very enjoyable to catch up on what going on. Catering and raffles are the main fundraisers, and one community service in place is for a Santa Grotto in town, a spin-off from last year s successful Santa Bus. I was able to personally thank them for accompanying me on official visits, and for their involvement in organising the Remembrance and Rededication Service at my convention. I ended my week at a CEP (Club Excellence Progress) refresher/training course in Matamata, brought together by GLT leader James Marris and well-run by Brian Hammond. Thank you to all nine who gave up their Saturday so we can extend our knowledge and to enable us Strengthen the Pride by strengthening our clubs. District Governor Paula McWha & Robert Reach Out and Make a difference You ll miss the best things if you keep your eyes shut. Dr. Seuss, I Can Read With My Eyes Shut! LEOs Are You Up For It? Yes, Noozletta Editor Lou is challenging our 7 District 202L Leos Clubs this week. Knowing how brilliant your technological knowledge and thumbs are, which Leo s club will be the first to send Noozletta an article and pictures? It might be in the form of a Club Bio, or an article about your most recent service or perhaps the 10 best things about being a LEO. Submissions from sponsor clubs DON T COUNT! I want to hear from our talented youth! Send to noozletta@lionsclubs.org.nz Noozletta Editor Lou Fielder WANTED - an International Youth Camp Director The International Youth Camp held annually from 27 th December for ten days, is hosted by D202L. It has become a very popular event, catering for up to forty-five. Our reputation has spread worldwide by past attendees who have enjoyed the experience of the remoteness of Lake Okataina Rotorua. This year we expect sixty youths including of course New Zealanders, to help celebrate our twenty-fifth year. It will also be Camp Director Aaron Cameron s third and final year in the position, so we re on the hunt for a replacement. I m informed he has improved the computer system with many new processes put in place, so his successor will have an easier job. An understudy to Aaron is needed for this year s camp, to step up July 2015 as director for the following three years. Do you have the experience to organise young people (17-21yrs), have the energy, up for the challenge? Would you like to spend part of your summer surrounded by native bush, to the sounds of birds and the excitement of a group of people who rarely experience such peace and beauty? There s a wonderful team of supporters to help run the camp smoothly. You will be exhausted by the end of the ten days but by the time the last person leaves the camp you will realise what an amazing, life-changing experience you have had. If you think this is something you would like to know more about, even remotely interested, I d love to hear from you. Why not reach out and make a difference; not only make a difference to the youth but to you personally. District Governor Paula McWha REMINDER - Lions International Youth Camp A reminder to all clubs that if you are sponsoring any youth to the camp. Please can you send your applications to me by gpavitt@xtra.co.nz or to PDG Garry Pavitt, 6 Bridge St, Opotiki 3122 as soon as possible. The closing date is the 31st October. If you are struggling to find a youth to sponsor, how about sponsoring the youth that you entered into the speechmaker competition? District Youth Chairman (East) Garry Pavitt Peace Poster Competition A reminder that all entries for the Peace Poster close on the 1st November and are to be with PDG Garry by the 11th November for final judging on the 15th November Regards District Youth Chairman (East) Garry Pavitt Directory Changes Putaruru Lions President: Lena Martin molena@farmside.co.nz Putaruru Treasurer: Lindsey Robbins landgrobbins1@vodafone.co.nz Busy Day for Lion Express Taupo PAKEKE ran another successful fundraising Gala Day on Saturday 11th October for the Ronald McDonald House at Starship Auckland Hospital. With the co-operation of McDonald s Taupo enthusiastic staff who contributed greatly with a sausage sizzle, face painting, bubble blowing, Monster Raffle and cake stall plus the help of a fine day and the support of the local newspaper Taupo Times, who devoted half the back page of their Friday edition to advertise the event, it resulted in over 650 children of all ages including Grandmas enjoying a ride on the Lions Express. The amount raised has not been totalled yet but we hope to exceed the $7,000 raised last year. Taupo PAKEKE looks forward to repeating the exercise for other charities including Diabetic Awareness, the T E C T project and for the Ronald

3 McDonald Retreat in Rotorua in the coming summer months. This was just another example of how We Serve in our communities. Taupo Pakeke Publicity Officer Graham Mock From Our Second Vice District Governor s Desk This week sees me visiting Taneatua, Whakatane, Whakatane Kopeopeo and Whakatane Sunshine Coast. I am looking forward to my visits and catching up with members and always look forward to hearing about projects completed and projects in the pipeline. Club Excellence Process (CEP) Training Day On Saturday, I attended CEP Facilitators training day. What a great session. What is CEP? The Club Excellence Process (CEP) is a fun, interactive process that brings members together to look at what your club is today and what it will be tomorrow. It gives you the tools to strengthen your service, improve club effectiveness and enhance your membership experience. CEP is the perfect resource for any club that wants to achieve excellence. I have received several Club Bulletins. I enjoy reading about Club activities both social and service projects. Great to read, Clubs are reaching out and making a difference keep up the good work. Lions Club of Bethlehem Te Puna project Wheelie Good Fun Day, is now gaining momentum. The event is taking place on Sunday 9 th November at the Tauranga Racecourse. The Aim of the project is to raise $ for Tricycles for Children with disabilities. The day is going to be packed with exciting events for the whole family! What you get by achieving your goals is not as important as what you become by achieving your goals - Henry David Thoreau Have a good week! Second Vice District Governor Stu Grey Help Lions Reach the Special Centennial Vision Goal By now, you've heard about our Centennial Service Challenge goal of serving 100 million people by 2017 in the areas of youth, hunger, the environment and, this month, through the Sharing the Vision Global Service Action Campaign. While it may seem like an overwhelming challenge, we've helped break it down by setting special goals within each area. Our special vision goal is to serve 10 million children with eye care through activities such as vision screenings, low vision aids, Braille education, mobility and white canes, sight restoring surgery, eye banking and eyeglass recycling. This month, plan a vision project that helps a child to see better. Download the Sharing the Vision Planning Guide for more project ideas and help getting started. District Centennial Coordinator Alan Scholfield HOSTS NEEDED for YOUTH EXCHANGE STUDENT We have a gorgeous young lady coming to New Zealand from Alexandra, Minnesota, USA under the Lions Youth Exchange Program. Cami Warren is 17. When I say she is gorgeous I mean it, her photo says it all. She will arrive in Rotorua on the 13th of December at 9.15 am, so we need someone to pick her up and host her until the Youth Camp starts on the 27th of December We also need hosting for her after the camp 6th January to the 20th of January She will depart from Rotorua on the 20th of January 2015 at 5.45pm. If you can help, please contact PDG Myra Davey, mal.myra@xtra.co.nz or between 6 and 8pm on Saturday or Sunday Mornings. Youth Exchange co-ordinator, Canada, USA, Argentina and Brazil, PDG Myra Davey Coming Soon - Tauranga Harbour Lions Annual Book Sale Tauranga Harbour City Lions are holding their annual book sale at the Bethlehem Town Centre on 15 and 16 November and are looking for donations of Books, CDs, DVDs, Jigsaw Puzzles and Games for the sale. Profits are donated to local charities and in the past we have donated to the Lions Cancer Lodge, bought 3 Hart Walkers, purchased a defibrillator for St John's Ambulance (not the small ones used in shopping centres etc but a large industrial one), and our latest project is night lights for the Volunteer Fire Service.

4 We would also like to thank the Lloyd Morgan Lions Club Charitable Trust for their assistance in enabling us to complete these projects.
