The 201Q2 District Governor s Bulletin Issue 1 July 2011 District Governor Gary Kenny The 201Q2 District Governor s Bulletin Issue 4 October 2013 We will await what surprises IP Barry and his Board may announce whilst in our District! Just down the road a little in Mackay, Ray Hansen and his Team are putting the final touches to the planning to ensure the 2013 District Convention, will be a memorable occasion. From the Friday night multi-cultural feast with traditional dancing, with great guest speakers including IVP Joe Preston and a great District Governor s Banquet, conventioneers are in for a great time. Hi there Lions of Q2, October is an important month for Lions in a number of ways; internationally it is Membership month, but particularly this year in Q2, October will be huge with the Lions International Board coming to our District, to Port Douglas and of course, our own District Convention. There are many Lions of our District putting in the hard yards presently, ensuring these two large upcoming events are going to be the success we would expect. PDG John Muller and his Team are working hard to ensure that our visitors from all points of the Lions world, have a great time where the Rainforest meets the Reef! Our International Board and their partners, as well as our Australian Council of Governors, are sure to leave our shores with a great taste of our famous North Queensland hospitality, with IP Barry Palmer agreeing that his choosing NQ for his Board meeting was a masterful choice! We also are providing a session on How to handle the Media, on Friday afternoon. The Organising Committee is planning to provide Something for Everyone and of course, Pudgy will be in attendance! I thank both teams of Lions for their work at present. In addition to all the above, Lion Audrey and I will be attending the Q3 and Q4 Conventions, also in October. The Q Governors this year have become very close - A busy time ahead indeed! To mid-september, we have visited 30 Clubs and we are thankful for the marvellous hospitality at the Club meetings and often at Lions homes. With our busy October schedule, there won t be many club visits made but we will make up for this in November. We have been very impressed with the range of wonderful projects and service that clubs are providing to their communities, including a number of large projects being planned. I don t like to pick out one project, but I must congratulate those Lions involved in the CCIA bike ride, which raises huge funds for Kids cancer, year after year

October is membership month, so I should re-iterate my Membership Aims for this year - A focus on Retention, by improving club atmosphere & with it member satisfaction As part of this, value contribution, recognize achievements, enjoy each other s company and have fun Rather than expect youth to change to our traditional ways, consider a Branch Club of young people they meet separately but count as a subset of the main club To promote female membership our District currently 34% - room for improvement A Club Growth Challenge for every Club of plus one net member increase 2 Larrikans from 201Q2 in Bali Audrey and I, with PDG John Muller, attended the ANZI Forum in Bali in early September. The Balinese are lovely people and impressed all with their cultural displays and absolute grace. We need to promote next year s Forum to be held in Adelaide, to all Lions and particularly to Club Presidents, who not only have a range of informative sessions from which to choose, but also can attend a meeting with the International President. I hope to see many of you at Convention in Mackay on October 18 th to 20 th. Don t forget your Club banners for the street march, Island dress for Friday night and black, green & gold theme for Saturday evening. Cheers for now, DG Gary I have given my support and approval to a major project to be run out of our largest Club, Townsville Castle Hill, to raise $1M across the State, to provide essential feed to the stock out west, dying from the drought conditions. Audrey and I saw firsthand how dry it is on our western trip and we were appalled at the conditions. Please give this Lions Appeal your wholehearted support as it comes out to you soon. We have as a District done extremely well so far this year with member additions. Well done all! DG Gary Spotted in the Isa on his Western Trip - 2 -

Kidnapped! More photographs from the visit to Bali to attend the ANZI Forum in September. The Ingham Lions Mafia has struck again!!! Pudgy the platypus who has been accompanying DG Gary Kenny and Audrey on their Club visits has been kidnapped! DG Gary and Lion Audrey had a very close encounter with Captain Jack Sparrow during their recent trip to Bali. A ransom note was found in place of Pudgy demanding $500 or the duckbill will get it! DG Gary said, Pudgy was a quiet little fellow, like all platypus, but had a vital role to play in acquiring donations for ALF. The ransom note! Our enterprising DG calmly put a dot between the 5 and the zeroes on the ransom note and handed over $5.00 for his safe return. The kidnapping could have been a real concern at this time, leading up to Convention, where Pudgy will have a lead role to play, said DG Gary. DG Gary meets one of the local Balinese people - 3 -

Lions Clubs International District 201 Q Hello Lions of Queensland, 15 September, 2013 I write in support of a vital project for Queensland Lions Clubs to urgently support our drought ravaged brothers and sisters of western Queensland. My wife Lion Audrey and I have recently completed a tour of our District s western clubs west of Townsville through Hughenden, Richmond, Julia Creek and Cloncurry out to Mt Isa then north to Karumba. We were shocked by what we saw with the drought very much evident. I am sure each of your District s country areas have similar issues. Some Lions from one of our clubs, Townsville Castle Hill, are often on the ground out there, and have commenced a drought relief project to deliver stock feed to those most in need and also hopefully to avoid more worrying consequential aspects of the farmers wellbeing. Through this fund raising effort, we hope at least to preserve our western graziers breeding stock. You might ask, how do we intend to deliver the produce & assure ourselves that it gets to the right people? The Team has had discussions with and have accepted to join with a voluntary outfit, Aussie Helpers, who are already on the ground specifically set up and with an existing network delivering feed to stock but much more is needed. I have met with Brian Egan, the founder of Aussie Helpers Brian was named Australia s Senior Citizen of the Year a couple of years ago, for his work in setting up Aussie Helpers. Please Google Aussie Helpers I did and was impressed with what I saw! Unfortunately the cost of stock feed & delivery is not cheap. I have endorsed for District Q2 s support, a project to raise $1M quickly, hopefully through Lions across Queensland running projects for this cause. Your District has also endorsed support of this project by their Lions Clubs Your Club will shortly be contacted to participate in this project - I ask for your Club s endorsement in support of your country cousins who are doing it so tough out there. Thank you for considering this vital community project. 11 $50K SightFirst Grant for Lions Australia in Northern Queensland As part of Lions World Sight Day, Lions Clubs International Foundation (LCIF) has awarded Lions Australia a US$50,000 SightFirst Grant to support the eye health activities in the Lions District 201Q2 area of North Queensland. This grant will be used by local Lions clubs to benefit the communities of Cairns, Townsville and Mackay in a range of ways Donations to each of the Low Vision Clinics in Mackay, Townsville and Cairns. Funds towards the purchase of a "Retinomax 3 Auto Refractor/Keratometer" for Cairns Base Hospital Opthalmic services. Finally Lions will purchase a small community bus (which will carry the Lions logo) to facilitate "self movement" by the Mossman Health Centre and will be used to assist with patient transfers from Mossman/Port Douglas catchment area to Cairns for specialist Opthamology and other eye related professional services. Currently clients have to pay $170 per round trip at own expense on public transport because this service is not funded under the Health system. Many cannot afford this cost, and subsequently do not attend their appointments. The provision of this vehicle will greatly assist with improving sight in this area. Founded in 1990 the SightFirst program is Lions Clubs International's most ambitious and successful initiative funded through the Lions Club International Foundation (LCIF). The program s mission is to build comprehensive eye care systems to fight the major causes of blindness and to care for people who are blind or visually impaired. Through their grants they provide support for communities to upgrade hospitals and clinics, train doctors, nurses and healthcare workers, distribute medicine and raise awareness about eye diseases and conditions. Lions have raised more than US$415 million to fund the Sight First program to save sight around the world and have made quality eye care accessible to millions of people in need. Barry J. Palmer International President

Hearing dogs alert their owners to sounds in the home by touching the owner with a paw things like knocks on the door, a baby crying or the phone ringing. Most importantly, hearing dogs alert their owners to life-saving sounds like smoke alarms. Our dogs not only offer safety, security and independence for the hearing impaired at home, they also give many the confidence to participate more fully in their community. Hearing dogs are not just working dogs; they offer years of faithful and friendly companionship. They are very special indeed. Each Lions hearing dog costs approximately $30,000 to train to certified hearing dog level. This includes the ongoing support the training centre offers throughout the life of the dog. The cost of training covers the initial purchase of the dog from the shelter, food, veterinary tests and treatments, staff for training and kennel management, facility and vehicle maintenance and, most importantly from the dog s point of view, their treats. Lions clubs donate significant amounts to keep the centre running, which we could not do without. However we always welcome any donations of money and goods and services to help us operate most effectively

The Clubs have been busy! Proserpine Lions Club The Proserpine Lions Club recently presented the Proserpine Nursing Home with a new dishwasher, oven and bakeware items. Nancy Bellert, the Lifestyle Coordinator was over the moon to accept these donations for the Lifestyle Therapy Unit. She said that the Service Clubs were exceptional and extremely generous, which was a reflection on how generous the people of the Whitsundays were. The gifts were presented by Proserpine Lions Secretary, Horace Lowbridge, who said that the club was raised from the local community and was happy that the donations were going back into the local community. Grazier and poet Tom Muloni from Mena Creek entertained the crowd with his dogs and ducks routine. Dr Merrilee Frankish gave a heartfelt talk on her time in New Ireland province Papua New Guinea with Australian Doctors International. left to right:- Nancy Bellert, Debbie Jones, Horace Lowbridge and Joy Forster. Mareeba Lioness Club The Mareeba Lioness Club again held a very successful Pink Ribbon Garden party in the grounds of John and Delsi DeLai s Mareeba home. As a result the Club has been able to donate $10, to the Queensland Cancer Council breast Cancer research project. And the ladies got into a bit of Zumba to loosen up

Mission Beach Lions Club Already we are into September, and Mission Beach Lions are going from strength to strength in Three new members have boosted the team this year, and a number of new ventures are being progressed. We had the good fortune to be involved with Cycle Qld s Mission Beach to Port Douglas bike tour last week. The weather was miserable, but the spirits were high with all the cyclists keen to explore the area and be involved with some fun activities that the villages had put on. Our job was to act as runners for registration (overall 740 cyclists were registered) and to offload over 600 bike boxes from 3 trucks for the cyclists to piece together and get on their way. Lions Stephen Wells, Reg Kuchler and Allan Mackney - getting ready to package another bundle of merchandise. Also this year, we embarked on the 2013 Hysterical (oops historical) Bus Tour and hoping to make this an annual event, 6 pubs, a huge dinner and plenty of history. This was a huge success and was talked about by all for a few weeks after! A few major milestones were met 30 year and 40 year membership badges to Lion Greg Heath and Lion Reg Kuchler respectively, a couple of huuuuge wedding anniversaries and a successful combined changeover dinner Lions and Cycle Qld volunteers offloading boxes The collective Lions and guests- at the final pub of the night! The registration Center Lion Sheila Lawler getting ready to package another bundle of merchandise. Along with our regular projects and a few new ones (we are embarking on a vehicle safety campaign this September), we are having a busy year! If you are visiting the area, feel free to contact a MBL (no not an exotic drink!) for a chat or a coldie at our Friday afternoon raffles or like us on facebook!

Mareeba Lions & Lioness Clubs Recently the Mareeba Lions and Lioness Clubs were asked to provide smoko for 700 Cycle Queensland bike riders and their supporters. The ride is an annual event which this year was from Mission Beach to Port Douglas. Setting up to make hot drinks and provide good homemade food for the group 30 kilometres from town was a daunting task, but one which the two clubs took on and succeeded with. Feedback from riders and organisers was all very positive. Thankfully the event is not likely to back in this area for another six years! donations, of which $ 5000 by Halifax Rifle Club representative, John Tento, is greatly appreciated. The executive and members of the club express their gratitude for all assistance whether monetary or otherwise received from the community. The units at present stage of construction The Smoko stop Lower Herbert Halifax Lions Club The installation of roof structure of the three, double units being built adjoining the present retirement village at Halifax, by the Lower Herbert Halifax Lions Club was celebrated at a get together of club members, contractors Patane Brothers, and guests at the site recently. Club members These three units are the first of four stages totalling ten double units planned by the club to be built as funds become adequate. All units will have carports and be wheelchair accessible. The present stage has been completely funded by nett income from existing single units, fund raising projects by the club, and Checking on progress!

Also benefited by donations were Tablelands Men's Shed, Fassio Road, Hodzic Road, and Narcotic Road Rural Fire Brigades. President Tom Braes said the Lions Club raised money from the community, which then enabled it to be involved in hands on service projects, however it was also very satisfying to be able to support other local organisations which were providing vital services to the community. Thank you, Audrey, for your wonderful contribution to Lions Clubs International and for helping to make our community a better place in which to live.

The following is an extract from a letter received recently from Lion Merv Rose. Can we use some of his suggestions in our own Club area to improve membership recruitment? Upon arriving in Mackay a month ago I attempted to link up with a club and have noticed difficulties for an outsider to link or be aware that clubs exist in this great city. 1. I went to the Tourist bureau and found no Lions clubs listed although they knew that a convention was to be held in October. 2. Could find no street signs advising re Lions 3. Local phone directory, No Listings (This is available at no cost and listings are closing very soon.) 4. Checked out local Mackay and district Trader last 2 issues, which has many notice board entries including Rotary etc BUT NO Lions Clubs. Entries are free. 5. Rang Mackay Host club Contact (obtained from a web page). No reply so far. 6. Web pages are not conclusive at all and are not up to date. 7. Couldn't find a notice board at airport but might have missed it! 8. WENT ON 2 OCASSIONS TO KFC MT PLEASANT to meet Lions who had a sign that they were collecting cans. No Lions present within the times stated. 9. Your District bulletin which I obtained a copy from Melissa Green is great, but no phone numbers for District officers at all only names. 10. All local papers purchased but no Lions details to be found in 1 month. In my past 2 years in my role as District 201Q1 Media/PR officer I advised clubs to- 1. Buy a mobile phone which was the only phone number to be advertised in all media for that club and to be switched on 24 hours a day. This meant that number was consistent no matter which club officer was in office and the phone is passed to an alternative if the nominated person is to be away. 2. A media officer be appointed to each board so that that person can be aware of what is discussed at board level when answering phone. 3. A web Page to be constructed and kept up to date as I found that some of my clubs were 12 years out of date! 4. Regular community ads were to be inserted in local papers and local community radio. 5. BE IN CONTACT WITH A LOCAL NEWSPAPER JOURNALIST TO FOSTER AN UNDERSTANDING OF PAPER POLICIES ETC. 6. Purchase a Tear Drop flag (at a negotiated cost) to display at all outside functions. 7. Each club was to place nominated number phone number in local phone directories. I trust that above thoughts may assist your District as I have only good intentions to further Lions since joining as Charter Vice President in Canberra in It is not intended as criticism but to advance LIONS. I look forward to meeting local members as I have met with Blue River Club already and I intend with your permission to attend the Convention in October. Regards Lion Merv Rose Im.
