1 Issue 5: November 2012 District Governor Doug Winterflood Another busy month, Since I accepted the mantle of DG in July I have covered more than kilometres around the District with more to come but with a bit of luck I should only have a handful of clubs to visit once the Convention is over. In the past month I have visited another 14 clubs mainly in Zones 2 (all completed) and 3. It has been a pleasure to visit the clubs on the Tablelands and to have been accompanied by PDG Garth Gleeson for those visits and I have very much enjoyed Garth and Ronda s hospitality in Yungaburra and covered every road that goes round in circles up there on the Tablelands. In Babinda a James McLardie award was presented to Carl Lauridsen by the Club for his work at the local school with putting hope into young lives. At Lower Herbert/Halifax a new member, Ben Christie-Johnston was inducted and the club has plans for further retirement units to go with the 18 already occupied. On to Innisfail, and then Mission Beach where we enjoyed a relaxing social night for very busy Lions and Lioness Clubs. The new month commenced with a visit to Alice River Club where an Ian Fraser Award was presented to Lion Janelle Hill and Ray Phippard awards were presented to Life Members Peter Hill and Carl Coleman. Congratulations to these three hard working Lions. The Tully Lions and Lionesses met at a very historic pub in El Arish and then to the Tablelands for a combined meeting of the Atherton Lions, Lionesses and Tolga Clubs who were a happy group. At Herberton a new Lion Sandra Auty was inducted at a combined Lions/Lioness meeting where the Jacaranda The 201Q2 District Bulletin were in full bloom and at Kuranda 3 new members, Mark Ruge and Kathy and Garth Ritter were inducted at the very picturesque dinner venue, the Resort. Then followed a combined meeting of the Ravenshoe and Millaa Millaa Clubs. I also attended a combined Lions and Lioness meeting in Malanda where another new member Janet was inducted. Malanda is another very busy club and another where retirement units are part of the club s activities. I finally left the Tablelands and attended a meeting in Cardwell. Their Den has been upgraded following Cyclone Yasi and now includes a men s shed and gymnasium. It was also great to induct another new member Cathy Conway. It is another busy club being the only community service organisation in town and although the damage runs deep the local Lions are putting up a brave front. The number of diverse projects adopted by the clubs of this District is absolutely amazing and it is great to see the amount of work done by those clubs within their respective communities. At this stage I would like to invite all clubs to send us details and photos of your projects. I really can t understand why you wish to keep your good work a secret. It s fine for me to travel around and see all of the excellent work being done but it would be great if you were to spread the word amongst the other clubs in the District. You may give another club a good idea. Please send your articles and photos to Nathan our Bulletin Editor. About 70 of us had a wonderful weekend of celebration at Camp Kanga to celebrate the 20 th anniversary of District s acquisition of the Camp and Vice Governor Gary Kenny did an excellent job in organising the celebrations.
2 Thanks must also go to Camp Chairman Pat Lynch for the donation of his precious time and Lion Ian Dow of Rollingstone Club for organising the new signs on the main building. We now have an honour board for all of the benefactors of the Camp and a complete listing of District Governors for our District 201Q2. Our managers Ray and Kay have done an excellent job in the presentation of the Camp and deserve our thanks for a job well done. I must also add that the meals were excellent on the weekend as well and it was great to sample nice fresh vegetables rather than the frozen variety and we know our youth will be well catered for at the Camp. You will all know by now that November is Convention month and plans are well developed for us to get revved up in Why do horses never get divorced? They are always in stable relationships! DG s Diary for November: Nov 4: Zone Meeting Bowen Nov 5: Visits: Cairns/Leos Nov 6: Visits: Cairns Business/Cairns Barrier Reef Nov 7: Visit: Weipa Nov 10: Zone 1 meeting Cooktown Nov 13: Visit: Richmond Nov 14: Charters Towers Nov 18: International Board Committee meeting Nov 22: Arrival of International President Nov 23-25: Convention Nov 27: Visit: Townsville Barrier Reef Dec 1-2: Cabinet Dec 5: Visit: Proserpine Dec 8: 50 th Anniversary: Ayr CHANGE OF DETAILS: Aitkenvale Business Lions Club: President- Donald Hamilton , Secretary- Karen Ernest karen@johngribbinrealty.com.au Change of address for Twin Cities Leo Club: info@twincitiesleos.org New contact for Northern Suburbs Lioness Club: suelanphier@bigpond.com Townsville. An exciting and informative programme has been planned. Some details of the programme are available elsewhere in this Bulletin. A special thanks must go to Chairman Gordon and his committee who have devoted many hours to the meticulous preparation for this weekend and to the many changes that have become necessary as circumstances change. We have also had enough supervision to ensure that the Convention will be gender neutral. Looking forward to seeing you all at Convention, have a great month Developing opportunities through Service. Doug. Recently in Sydney, Cody Harris (Grandson of Lions Peter & Janelle Hill of the Alice River Lions Club) received the Pride of Australia Child of Courage People s Choice Award. After winning the Queensland State award he went forward for the National Award which was awarded by votes from the public. Congratulations Cody! 4 Hi Leos, I went to visit the Cathedral Leos this week at one of their meetings and they are gearing up for their yearly Christmas visits, and looking forward to convention. With regards to the Lions Convention 23 rd 25 th November, you would be aware that the District Leos are hosting the Friday night informal gathering. So far Nathan Toll does not have many helpers for this occasion and am hoping you can contact him to advise if you will be able to assist. His is nathan.toll@my.jcu.edu.au and I am sure he would appreciate you contacting him and offering some assistance. Also at convention I will be running a stall to promote Leos and would love to have some photos of the current Leos out and about at projects so if you could please me some or send me a heap on USB that would be great. Also it would be great for as many of you to attend as the International Lions President will be in attendance and youth, especially Leos are one of his passions. He will be speaking oat the Saturday afternoon session and it will be something not to miss. Remember if you are planning to attend convention in any capacity then you must register. A few weeks ago I ed to the clubs, advisors and sponsoring Lions club presidents information about LOTY. This year district judging will be held on Saturday December 1 st and as most of you should be finished school by then, it will not encroach on your exams. Applications close November 15 th and the originals need to be sent to me please (details below). If you do not have an application form and are interested please also contact me and I will get one to you immediately. This is a terrific competition and the State judging will be held at the Leo conference at Camp Kanga next March. Well I hope to see you all at convention, send me heaps of photos and don t forget you are welcome to contact me if you need any help with anything, projects etc. Contact details: or suelanphier@bigpond.com. 11 Haydon Cres Heatley 4814 On Saturday 20th October, 10 Whitsunday Lions Club members travelled to Hamilton Island to attend the 2012 Whitsunday Tourism Awards. The Whitsunday Lions Club had been nominated for the Ergon Energy Outstanding Contribution by a Volunteer or Volunteer Group. On the announcement that we had won, our two current Markets managers went up to receive the award on behalf of the Club. Lion Allan Gravelle, our Saturday Markets Manager & Lion Robina Mealey, our Cruise Ship Markets Manager, were presented with the trophy for the " Whitsunday Lions Airlie Beach Community Markets" Our group was ecstatic at the win, it was great recognition for the club, who have been running the markets for nearly 13 years. The Markets are our main project, and have enabled our Club to support Lions and Community projects worth many thousands of dollars over this time. (Photography supplied by Hamilton Island Photography). Ravenshoe and District Lions Inc.: We sponsored a Torimba Queen in our Torimba Festival in October Our Queen entrant, Alexis Quires, was also our Youth of the Year entrant. The theme of the festival this year was story books so we chose as our float to depict "The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe". We had a working bee on the morning of the the madi gras and had our float ready to take part in the 3.00 parade. We won first prize in procession floats so were very pleased with our work. At the Torimba Ball held on 20th October Alexis won the Charity Queen title as she sold $1,400 worth of raffle tickets for the Torimba Committee. We are very proud of Alexis Squires and the work she has done for Lions this year. Torimba. Kind regards Lion Sue Ruddick District Leo Chairperson
5 YOUTH OF THE YEAR Significant changes are underway in the running of our District Final. As agreed on at the last Cabinet Meeting there will be only five contestants, coming from our eleven zones. All Clubs and Zone Chairpersons should be aware of this, but for those Clubs and members that are unsure what is happening I will explain how the process will work. In line with other Districts throughout the Multiple District I was requested to reduce the numbers at our District Final. On studying the figures from the last few years I based my solution on the numbers of Clubs, Schools and Contestants involved in the Quest. We recently had Jan Niels as a guest speaker at our dinner meeting and I have attached a brochure of what Telecross is. It is a wonderful voluntary organisation that people can donate 2 hours once a week to go to the Townsville Hospital and phone aged people living alone just to make sure that they are okay. Volunteers are always needed. Lion Di Pyers. Zone 1 has enough Clubs and Schools to warrant one place in the final. Zones 2 and 3 will be asked to have Zone Finals and select the top two contestants to compete in a Regional Final to select their entrant. Zones 4 and 6 (based on usual numbers) will have a multi-zone final. Similarly Zones 5, 7 and 8 will have a multi-zone final. Zones 9 and ten will hold Zone finals and select the top two contestants to contest a Regional Final. Although we do not officially have regions in our District, certificates are produced for those Districts that do, and being so, these certificates will be used at Regional and Multi- Zone finals. Please visit the Youth of the Year stand at convention to pick up your paperwork and register your club if you haven t already done so. Most Zones have indicated the Club that will be hosting their Zone Finals and I am looking for Clubs to host the Regional and District Finals. As there are only five contestants in the District Final, I feel that any club within our District can now have the honour of hosting the final. Winston Sleaford YOTY District Chairman Wsleaford49@bigpond.com Ph Mob Tully Lions entered the Roaring Pussycats team into the Relay for Life at Tully Showgrounds. PDG Rod Bradley and Lion Martin Braddick looking splendid with their masks on as they walked the circuit earlier in the night. By 9 am the next morning the members still left in our team were Rod and Val Bradley, Larry Senko, Jenny Ottone, Peter Reed, Michael Ottone, Martin and Irene Braddick. Everyone feeling a bit tired by now and ready to go home for a shower and sleep. The 20 teams entered raised over $65,000 which was a great effort from a small community, all for a great cause.
6 BILLYCARTS SUCCESS! Back on 16 th September Malanda played host to Lions 2012 Qld Billycart Titles and gravity machine races our club s major public event for the year. Three days later some of us were still getting over the activities which started with cart scrutineering on Saturday morning and carried through until after the clean up on Monday afternoon. Over 90 competitors aged between 8 and 73 turned English Rd Malanda into a 400 mtr. long BILLYDROME for a day when some 83 races were run over a 6 hour period. A team of semi-professional STREET LUGE and SKATEBOARD riders from Townsville demonstrated their death defying skills clocking over 50KM/ HR just 50 mm from the bitumen. For the first time a local lad Brandon Irvine from Yungaburra competed in a LUGE race against seniors. Two very classy billycart IMPORTS from the Townsville RAAF and ARMY bases also competed. Local billycart competitors were far from outclassed. Experience of the previous three years competitions at Malanda and Cooktown showed through with carts being refined for each meeting to improve their speed and handling. Barry Young in Number 17 got a 2nd in the open Class but Ted Griffin in Black Caviar had lost his winning touch. Competitors came from as far as Wollongong NSW, Townsville, Cairns, Mareeba, Atherton area as well as many locals. The Tablelands ever popular supporter of community events Shane Knuth MP competed strongly in some 4 races to take out the Celebrity Challenge. He has been trying for the last 3 years and finally cracked it. Congratulations Shane. A new competitor Tablelands Councillor Geoff Stocker made a good start in his heats but missed out in the final. He enjoyed it and will be back. Carts on the starting ramp Everyone needed a tow back to the start The Mareeba Lioness Club is quite proud of what we raised at our annual Pink Ribbon Garden Party this year. After everything has been finalised, today we were able to present Lynsie from the Cairns Cancer Council with a cheque for $8100. Our club is quite busy at the moment, tomorrow we are running the TRC Book Sale with the proceeds promised to ASDOGS. Next weekend is the Tablelands relay for Life, Where Herberton & Atherton Lionesses will help us stay awake to serve tea & coffee for the participants. Sponsorships and entrants from some 11 Lions and Lioness Clubs within our district also supported the event which became a de-facto District project. Thanks Lions. The event went off very smoothly thanks largely to the many hands on the day. Our members did a great job with good support in a number of areas by volunteers from other groups and services. From committee chairman Glynn Morice and the committee a big thank you for your participation and support.
