The 201Q2 istrict District Governor Gordon Bailey The 201Q2 District Governor s Bulletin Issue 3 September 2014 Lion into the Aitkenvale Business Club, and the honour of presenting a 50 year medallion to Lion Angelo Girgenti of the Lower Herbert Halifax Lions Club. DG Gordon with International President Joe Preston at the ANZI Pacific Forum in Adelaide. Greetings to our Lions family in District 201Q2. This report comes to you from Adelaide where I am attending a meeting of the Council of Governors. Whilst here Diane and I will also attend the ANZI Pacific Forum along with 2nd Vice Governor Lion Brian Hewett. Whilst I am attending meetings, Lion Diane and the other DG's Partners have been visiting the Lions Hearing Dog Training Centre in Hahndorf; a visit she has thoroughly enjoyed and recommends to anyone who has the opportunity. I am writing the report without recourse to my normal resources, so please forgive me if I have missed something. I have so far made official visits to six Lions Clubs and had the pleasure of inducting one new On my visits I have been speaking on International President Joe Preston's theme "Strengthen the Pride" and my theme "Pride in Service". There are four main areas where we are asked to Strengthen the Pride through Service; through Youth Activities; through your Club Administration and through Membership, and put concisely, Service is the core of our existence and we are asked to continue living up to our motto "We Serve"; Youth are our future and we are asked to involve ourselves in youth activities; Administration of our clubs is key to membership satisfaction and how prospective members see us; and of course Membership, for without members we have no clubs and naturally our communities suffer. I am particularly mindful of the need to increase our female membership. We currently have only a 34% representation so the District still has some way to go to reach my target of 50%. There are still several clubs in the District who have not yet admitted female members and I have to say to them that not only are they ignoring a most valuable resource, they are depriving themselves of the talent and fresh ideas female members will bring to your club. As you know, Papua New Guinea is a part of our District and as a result we have a healthy representation on the Multiple District PNG Assistance Committee. I have a couple of changes to report regarding the make-up of the committee, with PDG Di Pyers standing down and being replaced by IPDG Gary Kenny who also assumes the role of Projects Co-ordinator

2017 is the centenary year of Lions and I have been asked to appoint a District Co-ordinator for the milestone celebrations and activities and I am pleased to report that PDG Pat Lynch has accepted that position for a three year term. Those of you who are up with the times will have noticed the increased activity on Facebook and also the improvements to our District website. This is all due to our fabulous District IT and Webmaster Lion Amanda Wilson. Please submit articles, information and photos to enable Amanda to keep up this high standard. And don't forget to submit articles and photos to our Northern Lion Editor, Lion Graham Fraser. Until next month, Gordon million members come together to serve, we can change the world. 4 Farewell Lion John Bailey Life Member Millaa Millaa Lions Club He appointed himself the unofficial permanent Membership Director of his club, and the number of current members sponsored by him, is testimony to this. He believed in promoting interclub activities whether it was a friendly bowls match or combined club project. His many personal projects included the club s citrus orchard which often looked like fading away until John intervened, Youth of the Year, the Lions Park gardens and picnic bbq facilities. In a time of crisis, such as after a cyclone, John led his club and community by example, in recovery actions. John s efforts for the community of Millaa Millaa were recognised in 2012 when he was awarded Citizen of the Year by the Tableland Regional Council. It is with a sad heart that Millaa Millaa Lions Club announces the loss of a highly valued member, John Albert Bailey, who passed away recently. John joined the local Lions Club in 1983, and from then until his passing as an active member on Sunday 6 th April this year, he served with pride, diligence and dedication. He was well-known and highly respected amongst the Lions community of Atherton Tableland. At club level, he served in just about every official position, including a couple of long stints as President. Family and business commitments prevented him from accepting the frequent invitations to serve at District level but he responded by devoting all his efforts towards ensuring his local club prospered and grew. Other community interests included the local State school, ANZAC Commemoration, Garden Club and ensuring the local community got its fair share from the local Council. John personally stepped up when a neighbouring club looked like folding and did all he could to assist the club to survive and grow. John was the epitome of a Lions member and will be sadly missed by his fellow club members and Lions members across the Atherton Tableland of North Queensland. He was awarded Life Membership in His example will be a model for members to follow for a long time to come. Members of the Lions Club of Millaa Millaa extend their deepest condolences to his wife, Val, a devoted Lions Lady, their children and grandchildren

LIONS HEALTH PROJECTS Lions in the last issue of the Northern Lion I said I would keep you up to date on my Health Portfolios, to date there is little to report but some things have happened over the last month. ALCCRF has also put in place an education program for doctors in rural Queensland and NSW to diagnose cancers more quickly in children which may go under the radar at times. Black Dog Ride National Ride will be completed on at Bondi Beach NSW. It started on at The Entrance Bateman Bay NSW. Lions Medical Research Foundation has moved into the 21st century by having its first Teleconference, this could save a bit of travel but face to face is still a preference. Items discussed included a thought that LMRF would look at having a special month where Clubs would raise funds for the Foundation with a reward coming to the biggest fundraising Club. This would be a great way to finance research and also raise awareness of the Foundation and its work. We will be having a Researcher attend our Convention. This will be a great way to learn of the work they are doing. Australian Lions Childhood Cancer Research Foundation has appointed a researcher, Professor Andrew Hallahan, at the Brisbane Children s Hospital. Queensland is getting a new state of the art Children s Hospital which will be catering for parents who will be accommodated in en suited rooms with their children. Andrew s associate, Dr. Julia Clarke, will be researching infectious diseases which accompany or result from kid s cancer, they are both keen to visit Lions Conventions. There were some individual rides in each state to support the major ride with many Clubs in Q2 supporting the riders with morning tea, lunch and dinners each day. Q2 s involvement with the National Ride had Clubs in Mackay, Bowen, Ayr, Townsville, Charters Towers, Richmond and Cloncurry assisting with meals. On the Queensland Ride, I know that Townsville, Tully and Cairns were involved also with meals. In Townsville there was a lot of media involvement and a dinner at the Castle Hill Lions Den where we served 78 meals to Riders, the District Governor Lion Gordon Bailey and Lions Club members who attended. Cheques were presented at the function. The next day the Riders attended the Lions BBQ at Bunnings Domain. We also had a visit from Hope in a Boat, Riders from Albany WA promoting Diabetes Awareness by towing a Boat around Australia, plenty of Lion involvement that week. There has been no news from my other portfolios to report but I would like Clubs to think about the idea of a month of fundraising for Lions Medical Research Foundation. If it doesn t happen for Queensland then maybe Q2 can lead the way as we normally do and get this project off the ground. PDG Aussie Lanphier Q2 Health Projects B - 5 -

They are accompanied by Lions Marina Rurenga and Raymond Cowcill driving a support vehicle and also towing a trailer. The group are travelling around Australia raising funds for diabetes research and raising awareness of the disease. A number of Castle Hill Lions Members had a BBQ tea and drinks with the travelers at the Castle Hill Den on Friday night the 1st of August. During the evening President Brian McAtee presented a cheque to Lion Glen Hurst The travelers then stayed at the Den on the Friday night before their departure south to their next prearranged stop in Proserpine. During their brief stop of 30 minutes, the club and locals donated money to this worthy project The fundraisers-come-adventurers are all from the Albany Lions Club in WA and they aim to raise $1,000,000 for Diabetes research. They left Albany on the 6th of July and are hoping to make it into the Guinness Book of Records with their journey. They will visit 240 Lions Clubs on their 80 day adventure. Their trip so far has taken them up the coast of WA and across the NT, into Qld

The Cathedral School Leos A case for smiles Last week two Leo Club members got the pleasure of going to the Townsville Hospital Children s ward as part of the current Leos project a case for smiles. Mareeba Lions Christmas in July celebrations 2014 Once again the Lions Club of Mareeba held a banana fritter stall at the annual Christmas in July celebrations held every year for the Grey Nomad fraternity. As the creator of the pillow cases project, my main objective was to brighten up the otherwise white and sterile environment of a child s hospital room and give children something they can associate with and feel safe with a security blanket, I suppose. Through the tireless efforts of John Delsi and Gary Delia the fuel raffle was a great success, as was the stall selling banana fritters, chicken kebabs and fresh fruit. $2,400 was raised for the community account. Getting set up Honestly, it s amazing how much of a difference it can make. We delivered six pillowcases made out of bright patterned fabric and got to hand deliver pillowcases to two of the children. Just seeing the little boy s face brighten up with his brand new super hero pillowcase really makes your day. The whole idea is about helping children with cancer or who are chronically ill and putting smiles on their faces. And when you see their reactions, you just can t explain that its the simple little things that show that everybody can make a difference, one step at a time. All systems go We are planning to fundraise to buy more material to keep putting smiles on little faces. Donations of funds or material to the Leo Club would be welcome. 8 Ayr & Home Hill Lions Rotary Clubs of both Ayr and Home Hill and Lions Clubs of Ayr and Home Hill recently worked together on a major project. For the first time in Burdekin History ALL 4 Service Clubs worked together to serve at a Canteen at the Ayr Showgrounds for the North Queensland Machine Preservation Society Rally from the 25th to the 27th July. After months of planning and meetings the resources and members of all four clubs served Steak Burgers, Sausages and Softdrinks to Rally Revellers. Two representatives from each club attended meetings where a Combined Service Clubs Committee was formed: Committee President John Woods (Home Hill Rotary), Secretary Jan Hatherell (Lions Club of Ayr) & Treasurer Kevin Mann (Home Hill Lions Club). 9 Lions Club of Malanda THRILLS AND SPILLS AT THE BILLY CART RACE The Qld Titles Billy Cart Race went off like a rocket on Sunday 17 August. Brilliant sunshine greeted the competitors at 9am as they gathered for the Drivers briefing, with Match racing starting almost immediately from the Juniors line at 09.15hrs. There were more than a few thrills and spills in the Midgets and Match Racing during the morning. Although all carts were scrutineered, four carts swerved across the track, two toppling over in the process, with damaged wheels and axles, a couple of helmets went flying and there were some bruises and ripped gloves, but no serious injuries. Jamie Johnstone,Tha lia Shailer and Brett Kelly battle it out for the Teens Champion sponsored by Nerada Tea. There was some serious speed racing after lunch with the men on Luge and G-Bikes. Pictured below is Michael Dilger with a face of intense concentration, waiting to compete in the Midgets Race for youngsters under 8 years old. Aych Australia s No 3 Luge racer. The Race is a free community event that attracts many young families from around the district, from as far south as Townsville to Cairns and up across the Tablelands including as far as Ravenshoe and Mt. Garnet. All races attracted a cash prize for the winner and second and third placings. Winners are also presented with either a cup, trophy or medallion. The Midgets Race was sponsored by Mungalli Creek Dairy Other races included the Gravity Challenge, Masters, the Business House cup, Youngest Driver was sponsored by Eacham Hardware, Oldest Driver was sponsored by the Cairns and District Historical Vehicle Club who also helped running the food stalls. The Novelty Race was sponsored by Thirkell Engineering, and the most unluckiest driver was sponsored by Mayor Rosa Lee Long. A fired up Shane Knuth, MP for Dalrymple lost to Liz Schmidt but he ll be back! Known also as the Gravity Dome, this is the Junior Track shown, from here up the hill incline increases dramatically.

Burdekin Lions Made the News in August Ayr Advocate FRIDAY AUGUST page 3 Service clubs combine for local benefits the camaraderie that existed among the team throughout the entire event. Each of our four clubs caters for events such as this slightly differently, yet we all managed to work like a well-oiled machine that had done this type of work this way always. He said it had been decided at the first meeting they held that all the money raised would go back to local organisations. Ayr Advocate FRIDAY AUGUST page 5 Community support for Black Dog riders Working together in community service were (from left) John Byers (Ayr Rotary), John Donald (Home Hill Lions), Mike Newton (Home Hill Rotary) and Jan Hatherell (Ayr Lions) Picture: David Jackson IT IS not unusual for service club members to be volunteering their time for the Burdekin community but it is a novel concept when four of the district s clubs work together on the same project. However, that is what occurred last weekend, as thousands of visitors from around the nation joined with local residents to support the sixth Queensland Heritage Rally at the Ayr showgrounds. All those people had to be fed over the three days of the rally and while organisers sent out an invitation to each of the clubs to become involved, the only way for such a big task to be undertaken was for four of the local service clubs to work together towards an end result. And that is what happened. Several meetings were held involving representatives of the Ayr and Home Hill Rotary and Lions Clubs in the weeks leading up to the Rally to plan for the provision of meals during each of the three days of the event and the end result was an organised roster involving the members of each club. That ensured the patrons hunger pains were met and the end result will be that the proceeds will be distributed to three local organisations on behalf of the four clubs, once it is finalised. Chairman of the joint service club catering committee, Home Hill Rotarian John Woods said he found it extremely gratifying personally to see The group of Black Dog Riders with (right) Lion's Club Vice President Leo Previtera, Mayor Bill Lowis and Cr Pierina Dalle Cort Picture: Regina Lovic THE revving engines of up to 60 motorcycles were heard in the Burdekin region last week, as the Black Dog Riders rode through the district. The group of riders have been making their way around the country to raise money for and awareness of depression and suicide prevention. Riders from around Australia have joined together for the 30-day ride, starting in Sydney and making its way to Ayr last week, from where they then travelled to Townsville before eventually finishing in Sydney on August 26th. On Tuesday, hosted by the Ayr Lions Club, the riders were greeted with a warm welcome and even warmer pizzas, as they rode into the Ayr showgrounds. The pizza was donated by Ayr Domino s owner, Ryan Comas, whose grandfather, Steve Comas, has been a Lions Club member for 45 years. Steve Andrews, who founded the Black Dog Ride organisation in 2009, took a single pizza from the pile and rode to Steve and Lola Comas house to deliver it. Mr Andrews had said it was the simplest thing he could do to give back to someone who had supported an organisation he s been a part of for more than six years The act was described as a tribute to Steve Comas work, as he was unable to attend the

event personally due to his health. The couple were surprised and delighted, as Mr Andrews handed them a delicious package, including garlic bread, pizza and dessert. Mr Andrews then travelled back to the Ayr Showgrounds to share lunch with his comrades, before humbly accepting donations from the community. This ride alone has raised more than $750,000 along with the donations received on the day from the Ayr Rotary Club, Home Hill and Ayr Lions Clubs, Steven and Lola Comas, as well as a donation by the Burdekin Council, totalling $1070. All proceeds will go to the Black Dog Institute at the University of New South Wales. Burdekin Mayor Bill Lowis welcomed the crew and said It s great to see you guys on the road. You re doing a great, wonderful job. We need to get out to the public and remove the stigma surrounding depression. I hope you have a safe journey. Mr Andrews said he wanted to personally thank everyone. Heading from place to place, we ve really been supported by the Lions Clubs, its members and the towns and we really appreciate that. So thank you, he said. Thank you for the lunch you ve provided for us and even the delicious cake, which I ve been told kept Jan (Hatherell, Lions Clubs Burdekin Zone President) up until 3am cooking and icing them, he said. By Regina Lovic Ayr Advocate FRIDAY AUGUST page 6 Lions welcome Hope in a Boat THE Lions Clubs of Home Hill and Ayr have added their support to an unusual fundraising venture that passed through the Burdekin district last Saturday the Hope in a Boat. The venture is centred around a motorcycle towing a 12 foot aluminium boat on a fold-up trailer around Australia in 80 days to raise funds for Diabetes Research. The boat-towing motorcycle, accompanied by a support team of two other motorcycles and a car with members and supporters of the Albany Lions Club in Western Australia, will cover over 22,000 kilometres during the journey, which started in Albany on Sunday, July 6. The project originally commenced in 2011, when Lion Glen Hurst needed a bike trailer to travel from Albany to Queensland, but he found them expensive. He had found a used folding trailer and already had a boat, with the combination being bigger and lighter than a trailer. That combination attracted a lot of attention, prompting the Lions Club to use it as a project to raise funds for research. With Lions having made a significant breakthrough with a saving sight project, they believed that with the help of Diabetes Research WA, they would be able to do it again. Presently, there are more than 385 million people living with diabetes and it is expected that in less than 25 years, that figure will reach 592 million people. On top of that, every six seconds, a person dies with diabetes. The Lions Club project team believes that if a cure can be developed, the relief to the health system will be significant. The Western Australian Lions Club members were met at the Lions Diorama in Home Hill last Saturday morning by members of the Home Hill and Ayr Lions Clubs, where they were also joined by members of the Ulyssees Motor Cycle Club and the Ayr Nights Social Club for part of their ride. The Burdekin welcoming group for the 'Hope in a Boat' project members included (from left) Doug Bell (Ayr Knights Social Club), Nev Walker, Ann Coffison and Donn Thomson (Ulyssees Motor Cycle Club), Ayr Lion Jan Hatherell, Home Hill Lions Seb and Mary Vecchio with Albany Lions motorcycle rider, Glen Hurst. Picture: David Jackson The visitors were treated to a morning tea break prior to continuing their journey south and Home Hill Lion, Seb Vecchio and Ayr Lion, Jan Hatherell each handed over cheques for $150 towards the project

Drought Relief Project s From: David & Gayle East Sent: Friday, 18 July :09 AM To: Subject: Thank you from us. Dear Brian and all at Aussie Helpers. We were fortunate enough to be favoured with a visit from Wayne Fuller this morning and are writing to say thank you for the lovely goodies which he left with us. Wayne has also put our name down to receive some hay in Longreach on August 2 for which we're also very grateful. This time last year we would've said definitely not, we don't need any help, thank you very much - even though we were hand feeding most of our herd. This year is only worse, having missed any of the storms which were floating around earlier in the year. Most of our cattle have been dispersed, but we're trying to keep 200 replacement heifers alive on hay and cottonseed so any hay is very welcome indeed! Many thanks to all your sponsors for their generous contributions to us and to Aussie Helpers for distributing the products. Please be assured they are greatly appreciated by us in our current circumstances. One of the main things gained by us however is the knowledge that so many people actually care about us bushies, out here in the dust and heat (well...freezing cold at the moment!) I will try and attach some photos for you, taken early this year - things have only got worse since then! Cheers and many many thanks David and Gayle From: suzi-mcqueen@bigpond.com [mailto:suzi-mcqueen@bigpond.com] Sent: Thursday, 24 July :24 AM To: admin@aussiehelpers.org.au Subject: Thank you Just a note to thank you so much for the beautiful food and pamper parcel that was kindly delivered to us on Monday. You have no idea how these things help us continue the fight we are fighting against mother nature. Peoples kindness in these times is overwhelming. The job that you do is wonderful. It was extra special to us as my father passed away at the end of February and my mother on the 13 July so is a particularly trying time for me at the moment. To receive the packages on Monday was certainly a bright moment in an otherwise dark time. Again so many thanks for your kindness and the kindness of all those that have made donations. 17 Lions Clubs Australia Locked Bag 2000 Newcastle NSW August, 2014 Dear District Governor, Too many families are still losing loved ones to heart disease, but together we can save lives and stop the heartache. The good news is Lions Clubs Australia can help to make a real difference. The fight against heart disease depends on vital research, and with your generous support we can help save lives by funding the best heart researchers, who are working towards a world free of heart disease. That s why we re writing to you. The majority of our funding comes from every day people who are part of communities just like yours. In 2014 we re looking for 28,000 Queensland doorknock volunteers to help raise $1 million toward our National Big Heart Appeal, and we would love Lions Clubs Australia to be involved. Most people don t realise it, but heart disease is the single biggest killer of Australians, taking a life every 26 minutes. You can make a difference in the fight against heart disease by encouraging your members to spare a few hours from September to knock on doors in their street and collect vital funds for the Heart Foundation. Alternatively, you may like to support the Appeal with a donation, host a Big Heart Brunch, dress in red or take a challenge in September. For more information visit or if you d prefer to volunteer to doorknock as a group call Every dollar you collect will help in the fight against heart disease, so this September your big hearts really can help others.
