1 District Governor Gordon Bailey Davey to visit the Weipa club. I was pleased again to induct two new members into their club. We were then treated to a tour of Weipa where we were in awe of the scope of the mining operations. We finished by visiting Cardwell Club and were accompanied by Zone Chair Allan Hansen and Helen. We had a most enjoyable night capped off by inducting three new members. Greetings again to all in the Lions Family in this great District of 201Q2. As you read this, Diane and I will be in Newcastle attending the Multiple District Convention. This will have been preceded on the Wednesday and Thursday by the final Council of Governors meeting. We have had another wonderful month of Club Visits, beginning with Proserpine. I was honoured to induct a new member on the night and to present Lion Barry Humphries with a Melvin Jones Fellowship. It was particularly pleasing also to make presentations to five Children of Courage. We also visited Blue River Mackay Lions where we were accompanied by Cabinet Secretary Joyce Senini and PDG Ray. We then drove to Cairns and assisted Cairns Barrier Reef Club with a Garage Sale before flying to Weipa with Zone Chair Rachel In between these visits we attended the Youth of the Year State Finals in Brisbane and prior to that the District Finals in Townsville. Our District winner was Hamza Ashraf of the Whitsunday Anglican School, sponsored by the Mackay Northern Beaches Lions Club. Whilst Hamza did us proud, the State Winner was Patrick Cross from District Q3 representing the Bardon Lions Club in Brisbane. I was also honoured to participate in the Dedication Ceremony for the Cairns Trinity Beach Lions Club s Seats of Honour as part of the 100 years of ANZAC celebration. Two specially made metal seats were made, and affixed to each were plaques with etched photographs of a nurse tending an injured soldier and of an Ambulance funded by donations from Cairns residents from the First World War. The seats overlook the bay and provide a quiet place for reflection on the bravery and sacrifices of those who served and those who cared for them. We are in the middle of the March to May Membership Programme, and whilst some results are being achieved, it is less than spectacular. At the time of writing, the District has had a net loss of 90 members and if we

2 are to continue to be of service to those less fortunate we really do need to put in a little extra effort to reverse this trend. I am advised that the Working Bee at Camp Kanga on the weekend of April 18/19 while not terribly well attended was quite successful with several of the units in A block being brought up to an acceptable standard. My thanks to those who were able to attend. I would also like to remind all those Club Secretaries who have not already done so to record your incoming officers on the MyLCI website and also forward a copy of the form (PU101) to Cabinet Secretary Joyce to enable next years Directory to have accurate information. By now I would expect that even if you have not yet had your elections, you should have completed your nominations and will know who next years officers will be. DG Gordon presenting a Melvin Jones Fellowship to Lion Barry Humphries. Proserpine President Damian Mott looks on. Our Leos recently attended the Leo State Conference in Yeppoon under the eager guidance of Leo Chair Lion Tom Porter and by all reports this was a great success. Rapidly approaching is the International Youth Camp at Camp Kanga in early July. Youth Camp and District Youth Exchange Chair Lion Damien Mott is urgently seeking host families for the incoming youth so if you think you can help or want some information Damien would love to hear from you. His contact details are in the Directory. 6 26 th April 2015 Dear Lions, Lioness and Leos, Nepal Earthquake On ANZAC Day, Saturday 25 th April 2015 Nepal experienced a 7.9 magnitude earthquake between the capital Kathmandu and the city of Pokhara. The devastation is immense, with 1,800 people killed and thousands more left homeless and without shelter. Your Lions Clubs International Foundation (LCIF) has acted immediately to give a US$100,000 Emergency Grant, for the Lions of Nepal and neighbouring countries to distribute bottled water, food, blankets, hygiene packs, baby care, toiletries, medicines and temporary shelter to the people in need. The Lions Family in Australia continue to help the Lions of Vanuatu in the rebuilding of their island communities, but we have the capacity and will to help other small nations in their times of extreme difficulties. It is poignant that 100 years ago at Gallipoli the 1 st /6 th Gurkha Rifles Nepalese soldiers were there with the Australian and New Zealander forces. LCIF doesn t forget the needs of Australian communities where recent storms and flooding have caused so much damage in the Hunter Region. Your donation to the LCI/LCIF Disaster Relief Fund will enable much needed assistance to be given to the Nepalese people. Send your cheque in Australian Dollars to your District Cabinet Treasurer. Your donation marked as such is eligible to go towards a Melvin Jones Fellowship or Progressive Melvin Jones Fellowship. Conduct a bucket collection in your local community. MD201 is particularly close to this current disaster as we have a Nepalese Lions Club in N5 that gives us a window into this beautiful and peaceful country. They are in close contact with their family and friends providing up to date information on the situation in Nepal. 100% of every dollar donated to LCIF goes to the people in need. Please help Yours in Lionism, Nigel Jeny Please send all donations to the Cabinet Treasurer and mark from which club it is from and for the Nepalese earthquake appeal. If you require any more information please do not hesitate to , or call me. Have a great Day! Best Regards. PDG Barry Brockbank, 201 Q2, LCIF Chairman barry.brockbank@bigpond.com Mobile:

11 Incoming Officers Seminars May 2015 This year we are running the ICOS sessions in 7 locations across the District so that ALL clubs can access the training to get them on to the right foot to start the new Lions year. If you have been elected to the position of President, Secretary, Treasurer or Membership Chairman, it is most important that you attend the seminar to make sure you understand your role for the coming year, and are up to date with the latest information. Even repeat officers have something to learn! Other club members who want to expand their skills and knowledge are also welcome to attend. This year, the training will be more hands-on and interactive, so you can start putting your skills into action. Secretaries are asked to bring your club s logon details for MyLCI, so that you can practise using the reporting site. In Cairns, you will also need to bring a laptop or ipad if possible. Here are the details for this year s ICOS sessions. Morning or afternoon tea will be provided. Could each club secretary please contact the local coordinator at least one week before the training date to confirm the number of members who will be attending? 19 2015 Lions Youth of the Year 201Q2 The YOTY Program for Q districts in 2015 was a great success with judges at the State Final choosing Patrick Cross from Q3 to go on to the National final where he will represent all of Queensland. The public speaking state winner was Sean McCarthy from Q1. The program began months before with clubs throughout the state conducting club finals then Zone and finally District finals where one entrant from each District would compete at the State Final. In fact 628 contestants from 250 schools faced the 547 judges in front of 6872 audience members with 140 clubs involved in the club, zone and district finals. More specifically in Q2 we had 40 clubs, 42 schools and 148 students involved in the Program. The National Australia Bank, as well as being the major sponsor, provided 40 staff in Q2 and 103 state wide as judges. This is to be commended as it helps the sponsor get the most out of it s investment in the Program. The support of Lions and the extended Lions Family in our district made my job so much easier as the team approach setting, one goal, will always get you over the line. The standard of the students this year is a reflection on the work put in by their teachers and parents. From my experience this does not come easily especially when it has to fit in around their studies. This Program has been going now for many years and it was reassuring to listen to our District entrants comment on the relevance of the Program in today s changing world. I was pleased that the all saw it as a positive influence which gives me hope for the future. In my role as district Chairman 201Q2 I have had great support from the entire Lions Family and for that I say thank you all. After a break to catch my breath it will be time to start again. I look forward to working with all of you next year. Yours truly, David Bradshaw

Members of the Home Hill Rotary Club joined the Lions Club members at their dinner meeting at the Crown Hotel last week, at which the presidents of each club, Sam Harris (Lions) and Michael Newton (Rotary) handed over cheques totalling $672 to Home Hill High School teacher, Rhonda Williams, on behalf of the Chaplaincy Program. During the presentation, Mrs Williams explained that the program had to raise $50,000 each year to maintain the important support service at the district s schools. She also detailed how the chaplains were able to assist both the students and teachers through their daily lives at their respective schools. The funds raised came from the provision of food and the sale of flameproof candles during the Carols evening s entertainment.
