Mark Twain District 2015 Fall Camporee Leaders Guide Hail all Gladiators! Friday, October 16 Sunday, October 18 Camp Mattatuck 221 Mt. Tobe Road, Plymouth CT Hosted by Avon Troop 274
Hail all Gladiators! In ancient Rome, warriors would compete inside large arenas called coliseums. The contestants were called Gladiators, and the competitions were not only physical challenges but battles of will and sheer determination. The competitions were numerous, with Gladiators becoming more skilled and knowledgeable with each game. Victors would gain great glory for their efforts, for they had persevered beyond the rest. The Mark Twain camporee will offer the same opportunities for competition and variety for Gladiators to be victorious throughout the day. The competitions will test many different areas: physical fitness, lashing, creativity and cleverness with overall themes of friendliness and sportsmanship. For our Camporee weekend, we ll need some vocabulary changes. In ancient Roman times Legion refers to the primary unit = Troop in Boy Scouting Cohorts are the subdivisions of Legions = Patrols in Boy Scouting Gladiator is the individual competitor = Scout in Boy Scouting Roman Council was the governing body = Camporee Committee We ll use these terms throughout this guide and for the Camporee weekend. 3 Registration Online registration is available at Onsite registration and check-in will be at the Parking Lot Pavilion, Friday from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm, and will open again at 8:00 am on Saturday. Late arrivals will need to report to the Camporee HQ in the 49er Cabin. Fees are: $8.00 for all participants through October 10 $10.00 for participants registering after October 10 Fees apply to all Camporee participants (Boy Scouts, Webelos, adults) and cover the cost of patches to be awarded on Sunday, and use of the camp facilities. Campsites will be assigned at check-in. We will be using the summer campsites, with some Legions sharing a site. On Friday evening, one vehicle per Legion may proceed to your site, but must return to the main parking lot immediately after unloading. No vehicles will be allowed in the camping area on Saturday. Please exercise caution on the road, and respect the need to remove vehicles from the camping area. A Legion Roster (included in this Guide) must be submitted at registration, identifying Cohort names and Cohort members. Cohorts are expected to be balanced, with a mix of Gladiator ages and experience. 5 Legion/Cohort Gear Banner Legions will compete for most creative and thematic Roman banner. All are to be carried high on a T frame standard, and will be displayed on the Camporee Field for judging during the day on Saturday. This is a full Legion (not Cohort) competition. Banners should accompany the Legion to ceremonies and the Saturday campfire. More information is provided on Page 8. Banner Carrier A T frame is needed to transport and display your banner. A stand to make the banner selfstanding will earn points in the competition. Cooking for Caesar s Last Supper No restrictions on the menu plan, except that food must be prepared on the campfire (or charcoal) by the Gladiators; propane meal preparation is not permissible for the cooking competition. Creative menus will earn points. Meal judging rubric is included on Page 9. Presentation Props for Caesar s Last Supper Significant emphasis on the Roman presentation of the meal. Judges will be looking for Roman themes, appropriate for an Emperor! Costumes and decorations will earn points. Caesar s Last Supper is a full Legion (not Cohort) competition. Presentation judging rubric is included in this guide. Campfire skits Togas are the fashion of the evening, and skits are expected to follow the theme. When in Rome, everything is Roman! Togas Gladiators should individually bring togas from home for the campfire (an old bed sheet is perfect!) Take care not to cook, tend the fire or run in your toga. Camping Gear The Legions will be camping in the summer campsites. Legions should bring tents, canopies, lights and cooking apparatus that is functional in the wooded campsites. Legions will need to bring water containers (water is available at the Dining Hall) and their First Aid kit Fall Camporee Page 5
Summary of the Competitions Banner for the Legion In Rome, every Legion takes pride in its banner, and waves it proudly. Legions will bring custom banners, emblazoned in ways that characterize the membership. Scoring criteria are on Page 8. Every Legion must also bring a T frame standard on which to hang their banner. Banners will be displayed throughout the day of competition, and at ceremonies, of course. Caesar s Last Supper In true Roman tradition, the meal must be good, but the presentation must be magnificent! Meals (entrée plus dessert) are to be prepared without propane fuel (campfire or charcoal are recommended) and presented to the judges in Roman style. Judges will arrive at your Legion s campsite at a pre-scheduled time between 6:30 and 7:10 pm. Scoring criteria are on Page 9. Morning Field Games (Cohort competitions) Javelin Gladiators will throw javelins at targets, and accurate throws will score points. The further the target, the higher the points. Javelins (dense foam material) will be provided by the Roman Council. Gladiator Hospital An injured Gladiator requires transportation to the medic, and upon arrival will need correct First Aid diagnosis and treatment. Materials for stretchers will be provided. Competition will be time plus First Aid scoring. Battle Axes Gladiators faced challenges in the Coliseum, and were applauded for their skillful defense. With similar determination, our Gladiators will demonstrate their tomahawk throwing accuracy with targets they find in the Coliseum. Per BSA rules, Webelos will be unable to compete in this event; an alternative game will be available. Rope Ladder Your Cohort s pennant must be retrieved from the Coliseum wall. Cohorts will be timed in constructing a ladder from rope and wooden slats (to be provided), and sending a brave Gladiator to the top of the wall. Aqueduct Cohorts compete to supplement Rome s aqueduct with a water relay. Gladiators will need to display teamwork, coordination and swift execution to transport the water needed to fill the aqueduct. This is a timed event Fall Camporee Page 6
Messengers In Roman times, messengers worked in teams to carry information to Legion leaders. They covered great distances, and faced challenges in transporting the confidential message. Cohorts will be provided with a variety of conduits and will need to work together to assure the message safely reaches its destination. Materials will be provided by the Roman Council. Pugil Sticks Our pugil sticks are made of soft material, making this a game of strategy, balance and determination. Gladiators square-off in one-on-one competitions, representing their Cohort in a tournament-type competition. This game is not a Camporee competition, but intended to test the will of the Gladiators who participate. The Roman Council will provide gear and safety equipment. Afternoon Wide Game (Cohort Competitions) Cohorts will be assigned staggered start times, and then will proceed through these games in order. Galley Boats At the Waterfront, boats will be available for Cohorts to undertake a trading mission. Up to four members of the Cohort will wear PFDs and row to their trading center, and retrieve gold nuggets. Additional Cohort members may cheer from the shore. This is a timed event, for a completed round-trip. Safety first and dryness second Cohorts not displaying proper discipline will be disqualified. This game will have modification for Webelos participants. Archery Range Safety instruction will be provided to all Gladiators in the Council Ring at conclusion of the morning games (11:45 am). After lunch, Cohorts will try their skill with bow and arrow at the Archery Range. All members of the Cohort will participate, and scores will be averaged. Safety first undisciplined Cohorts will be disqualified. Catapult Near the Coliseum, Gladiators will find a nearly functional catapult. Cohorts will need to work as a team to complete the device, attaching a launching arm with rope lashings, and using the catapult to fire at a distant opponent. The Roman Council will provide all equipment; Gladiators will provide engineering design and launching power. Closest to the target will score the most points. Chariot Races Gladiators will pull one of their own through the Coliseum (Camporee Field) and around a turning post. At the post, a token must be collected and returned to the start line. Truly testing teamwork and determination, the winning Cohort will record the shortest round-trip time. All equipment, including safety gear, will be provided by the Roman Council Fall Camporee Page 7
Legion Banner Competition Rules Banners should be made prior to the opening ceremony. They should be left on the Camporee Field self-standing after the ceremony. Pick them up at the end of the afternoon games so they can be part of Roman campsite decorations. Legions will need to bring their own T-frame (and stand) for hanging their banner. Banners should lead Legions into the Opening Ceremony, the Campfire, and the Closing Ceremony. Judges Rubric Identification Legion Name 5 points Troop Number 5 points Boy Scout emblem 5 points District (Mark Twain) 5 points Event and Date 5 points Construction Design (artwork, creativity, originality) 15 points Workmanship and Detail 15 points Self-standing T frame 10 points Durability 5 points Camporee Theme Roman Gladiator influence 30 points 2015 Fall Camporee Page 8
Caesar s Last Supper Competition Rules Cooking and judging will occur in Legion campsites. This event is a Legion event; this will allow for all Gladiators to participate. Cooking must be done by the Gladiators with adult supervision. We would like there to be no help from adults, but to be there for safe cooking. Must cook on fire, just as the Romans would have. No stoves allowed. The teams can cook for as long as needed but it needs to be ready for the judges arrival. Will need to serve 4 judges the full meal. Legions should prepare an area for the judges to eat and enjoy the show. You will have a maximum of 20 minutes to serve and entertain the judges. Judges Schedule Sat., 9:00 am Opening Ceremony last opportunity to confirm participation in the competition (earlier sign-up by or at Friday/Saturday registration) 4:30 pm End of afternoon games 5:00 6:30 pm Judges walk-through campsites, looking for teamwork, etc. 6:30 7:10 pm Scheduled arrival times for Caesar s Last Supper judging Judges Rubric Food Taste 25 points Creative menu plan 15 points Plate presentation 10 points Roman Presentation Roman theme elements 40 points Roman service 10 points Bonus Entertainment 10 points Notes Food Category- Looking for a Roman theme. Main Roman meals in the evening consisted of a hearty meat meal and then fruit or nuts as kind of a dessert. Taste- Food should be thoroughly cooked, not overcooked. Undercooked or near raw items will not be eaten by the judges, and no taste points will be given. Creativity- Food is different and unique. The Romans had some pretty crazy meals, so this shouldn t be too hard. Presentation- Food should be plated nicely, not a mess and looks appetizing. Roman Presentation- the Presentation of the Roman theme is a big part of the score. The common Roman meal was eaten on a couch, with servants/servers giving the food or placing it on the table next to you. As great as it would be to sit on couches, the judges won t be expecting to see couches but maybe other items used, like a bench or cot of some sort will earn points. Roman theme- Campsite decorations of a Roman theme. Judges should feel like they have been treated to a full Roman experience. Dinner Service- Servers should be provided to give out food and ultimately represent their Legion in front of the judges. They should be dressed appropriately; judges will accept Roman togas or Class A uniform. (Side note- Cooks and servers should be different, allowing for cooks not to have to wear a toga or Class A while cooking.) Bonus Points- If the Legion provides some kind of Roman-Style entertainment (dancing, singing, etc.) while the judges are eating, the troop may be awarded up to 10 extra points by the judges Fall Camporee Page 9
Rules for the Camporee Weekend Camp Code The Scout Oath and Scout Law will be the law of the camp. Prescription Medication An adult must take responsibility for all youth medications (in original pharmacy containers), keep secured, and dispense as prescribed. Vehicles and Trailers One vehicle per Troop may drive to your site on Friday night, and all vehicles and trailers must immediately unload and return to the main parking lot. No vehicles will be allowed in the camping area on Saturday. Webelos Webelos Scouts are encouraged to participate, and will be rewarded for their efforts. Most game stations will have the same, or slightly modified, game to challenge the Webelos. Scoring will not be competitive among the Packs. Water Water is available at the Dining Hall. Fires Fires are permitted only in the designated areas of each campsite. Fuels Cooking fuels for stoves are allowed. Note, however, that the Caesar s Cooking Competition menu must be prepared over a charcoal or natural fire. Generators are not allowed in camp. Trash Leave No Trace. Pack out all trash and garbage. The dumpsters in the main camp parking lot may have capacity for the trash brought from your campsite. Tobacco Use of tobacco is discouraged in camp. No person under the age of 18 is allowed to use tobacco products in camp. Violators will be asked to leave. Adult smokers are asked to use discretion. Uniforms Class A uniforms are expected for the opening ceremony, and the Scouts Own and closing ceremony. Togas are encouraged for the Saturday night campfire. At other others, appropriate Scout dress is expected: Class B Scout shirts (no slogan shirts), closed-toe shoes, Scout hats (only), etc Fall Camporee Page 10
