1 President's Message May 2007 Vol #92, Issue #5 The pace of activity within the Lodge has definitely picked-up with the arrival of spring and the upcoming good-weather events at the Lodge and within the community. Members are out on the deck again whenever the sun is out and the upgrades to Waterfront Park by the City provide a whole new atmosphere along the waterfront. Thanks to the Ladies Club for the new sign on the front of the building. It provides identification for our Lodge and enables us to advertise current events to both the public and our members. Some of the Lodge Board Members attended a Leadership and Membership Workshop in Aberdeen in March and we came away with some great ideas for improving the operation and administration of the Lodge and the services we provide to our membership. Hopefully, we can implement some of them in the upcoming months. Don t forget Syttende Mai (May 17 th ) and Viking Fest this month. Let s all celebrate Norwegian Constitution Day and Viking Fest with all of our friends and neighbors in the Poulsbo area. Our Lodge and downtown Poulsbo will be the center of activity for this entire celebration. There are lots of activities for all ages. Our May Lodge meeting will be our memorial service in remembrance of our members who have departed this world during the past year. Please come out and join their families and friends as we remember them. Keep your eye on the Maken for info on Friday and Saturday Night s. Your dinner crews have developed varied menus, some with special prices, to get you down to the Lodge for an excellent meal and the opportunity to socialize with fellow Lodge members. As you can see by the different events advertised in the Maken, your Lodge officers, Program Managers and volunteers are working hard for you in providing a full slate of social and cultural events and activities to entice you to participate. As the warm-weather season arrives more and varied youth and sports events should also be anticipated. Come on out and be a part of it, whether as a volunteer, a participant, or both. Until next time Wade Moncrief Hordaland Theater May 14 - A professional group from Hordaland fylke, Norway, will be presenting a mini-musical at our lodge. Starts 7pm. The equivalent of our Memorial day, July 4th, and Labor Day rolled into one! It is why we celebrate Viking Fest in Poulsbo!!! There are parades throughout Norway where children carry flags and march to patriotic music supplied by school bands. After more than 350 years of Danish domination, Denmark ceded Norway to Sweden in But the Norwegians met in an assembly and on May 17, 1814 adopted a constitution and declared Norway a free and democratic country. Norway was forced to unite with Sweden, but it was promised equality and permitted to keep its new constitution. Parking Lot Closed June 3-10: - Trawler Fest will be using the upstairs parking lot in addition to rooms inside. The upstairs parking lot will be unavailable to all from Sunday, June 3 through Sunday, June 10. Måken Survey Have you taken the survey on the back of the newsletter yet? We are already saving about $50 a month by not having to mail the Måken to about 175 people. We encourage all to either receive the newsletter via or to read it on the website. About 75 people have asked for the Maken to be sent by US mail...and thats ok too! Lodge Website
3 Parcel Post Auction: At the recent Leadership and Membership Workshop we learned that some lodges hold a Parcel Post Auction to raise money. Members who are traveling around the country/world purchase an item from some location (minimum value $15), package and either mail or carry back to the Lodge, the package marked with the location (eg. Boston, MA) where purchased. At some time a potluck and auction is held with attendees bidding on items based on location where purchased and their expectation of the contents. We would likely have an auction in November/December with proceeds to the Scholarship Fund. If you would like to participate please send or deliver items to the office, which will hold them until the auction. This can be a fun social event for the whole Lodge, while raising money for the benefit of our youth scholarship programs. Bingo Buzz: Bingo at the Sons of Norway is a popular place to be on Wednesday evenings. Early Bird games begin at 6:00, followed by our regular games and jackpots at 6:30. Bingo at the Sons is a family event where people look forward to seeing and being with their friends. All of our profits go to our Lodge s treasury. We have been able to transfer $6,000 to the Lodge s operating fund so far this year. In addition to our income from the games, the Lodge is receiving money from our sales of hamburgers, hot dogs, sandwiches, salads, popcorn, chips, candy, and beverages that are sold each session. We need more volunteers to help on Wednesday evenings. Please let Adele know if you would like to volunteer once a month either with bingo or selling food at our bingo sessions. We hope more players will join us on Wednesday evenings for a time of fun and friendship, and to support our Lodge. We look forward to seeing you there. Editor News: I feel I can no longer continue to perform the job you elected me to perform as editor and thus submit my resignation effective immediately. Fraternally Olav Moseng Takk for att dere har tilat mig at vare deres editor Ladies Club News Our next luncheon meeting will be Thursday, May 3 rd at noon in the Viking Room. Our guest speaker will be Fay Linger, past president of Kitsap Audubon Society and a Master Gardener. Fay will present a slide show and give a talk on Gardening for Birds - ways to attract birds to your yard. Last month we transferred another $5,000 to the Lodge s operating fund for a total of $10,000 in The next time you are visiting the Lodge, be sure to check out the 2 new flowering pots on the deck, planted by Evy Halvorsen and donated by us to the Lodge. We are already preparing for our annual Viking Fest Luncheon on Saturday, May 19 th. Lodge members prepare a Scandanavian lunch with open faced sandwiches, desserts, Norwegian specialities, split pea soup, and even hot dogs. Open to the public; each item sold separately. It's a meal not to be missed! We invite any ladies interested in catering weddings and banquets and/or making Norwegian food specialties to join us for our meetings. A schedule for making lefse, krumkake, and Oslo kringle is published in this issue of the Måken. Kathy Moncrief ( )
