1 July 3 rd Fireworks No special events planned but the Trolls Den and Deck will be open for members and their guests. July 18 th Luau Canceled August 15, 2008 Country Western Party & Music More details in August Maken July 2008 Volume 92 Issue No. 7 President s Message President s Message: I hope that by the time you read this that summer has finally arrived. To say that it has been an unusual year, weather-wise, is an understatement. At least we can be thankful that we aren t sweltering hot or suffering floods, etc like other parts of the country. Kathy and I had a great visit to Norway in May. We attended our granddaughter s Confirmation in Sykkylven (near Alesund) and took the Hurtigruten coastal cruise. It was fantastic, if you haven t seen Norway this is an ideal way to see a large part of the coastal area from Bergen to Kirkenes. We had perfect weather and the scenery was breathtaking. With a few days in Bergen and Oslo along with a trip up the Sognefjord and the Flam railroad it was a highly enjoyable experience. Your Lodge delegates attended the biennial District Two Convention in Spokane in mid-june. Unfortunately the convention fell on the same dates as Midsommer Fest, so I missed another of our major lodge events this year. I am, however, confident that it was a wellattended and successful event under the capable leadership of Grace and Joanne. I ll have a report on the Convention for you in the August Maken regarding any actions that will impact our lodge and the Sons. Don t forget our Lodge day trip to Trollhaugen in July. This is a perfect opportunity to visit Trollhaugen, especially if you haven t been there before, to see this great recreation facility and to enjoy the fellowship of other lodge members. Please look for additional details elsewhere in this issue. Now that we are (hopefully) into the real summer season please come out to the Lodge and enjoy the dinners and other activities with your fellow lodge members. We have this wonderful facility that is the envy of many other Sons lodges in the area, please come out and enjoy it. Until next time Wade Moncrief July 8 th Lodge Meeting the speaker will be Don Anderson. The topic will be Ancient Games and Pastimes. Don wrote this book for the 56 th Biennial Convention of the Sons of Norway in June We hope you come and enjoy his time with us. POULSBO SONS OF NORWAY LODGE #2-44 June 10 Måken highlights Eight people were approved for membership in June : Carolyn Beach, Ella Elwell, Roger Fike, Roxanne Gihl, Brenda Houser, Frank Navage, Linda Navage, and Thomas Sherry. Leikarringen has 100 children registered in five classes and a sixth beginners class may be added for those on the waiting list Next year in Seattle is the 100 th anniversary of the Alaska Yukon Pacific Exposition and interest will be gauged for a re-enactment with a Viking boat sailing from Poulsbo to Seattle. The Symra dance group will be in Poulsbo August 10-11, with special thanks to a $150 grant from International. Additional host families will be needed. A group of Norwegians from Stavanger visited on May 31 and gave the Lodge two signed books and a Norwegian statuette. Many were associated with Region 8 of the organization. The Lodge Ladies Club served 400 guests at Viking Fest and the lunch and tent made $1800 net profit. The Lodge is still experiencing a deficit because transfers from the Auxiliaries (Ladies Club and Bingo) are down and expenses are higher, largely due to increases in utilities and rent as well as food and alcohol. Hopefully income will pick up in the summer as it has in the past. The Lodge is seeking replacements for the vacancy of Sports Director, especially as the summer golf tournament nears. There is a committee developing a Member Room Rental Policy, and what it entails. July 26 is Lodge Day at Trollhaugen, which will include a BBQ and some activities. Volunteers to help plan should contact Wade. The District 2 Convention occurs in Spokane June Wade prepared a handout summary of the resolutions and bylaw changes and members should talk with delegates about how they will vote. The delegates are: Wade and Kathy Moncrief, Julie and Phil Swensen, Jim and Marilyn Giarde, Dorothy Walsh, Ralph Naddeo, Denise Bauman, and Shirl Nadeau. A change in the Lodge meeting from 7:30 to 7:00 was not approved. The Lodge got a photo in Viking Magazine in May 2008, though the Lodge was identified as Lodge 42 rather than Lodge 44. The Lodge office number is: The Lodge Fax number is: The Trolls Den number is:

Many of us have purchased permanent universal life or variable universal life. I use the word permanent because that is what we were led to believe we were getting when we purchased our life insurance. The interest rate that was probably used was quoted around 8-9%. This was a current rate but there is another rate that is used and that is the guaranteed interest rate. This means that if the economy tanks this is the lowest rate that the cash value will be credited with. I don t believe any of us ever thought that interest rates would ever get this low and stay this low for this length of time. Most of the policies are now being credited with guaranteed interest rates and this rate is too low to keep the policies in force for many more years. Please examine your annual life insurance statements to see what dates the policies will lapse with current and guaranteed interest rates. This will usually be given if premiums are continued or if no premiums are paid. All of this can be very confusing and if this is the case then please give me a call at or me at tipper13@comcast.net. It is better to do something now to correct this then to wait because if the interest rates stay down then it is only going to get worse. You don t need to be in a situation where you need the life insurance and find out it has lapsed and you have no coverage. RALPH M. NADDEO

In addition Bill Ridley was approved to fill a vacancy on the Building Association Committee. Lodge Meetings Lodge member Barb Mitchusson proposed that the Lodge Meeting time be changed from 7:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Discussion centered on how difficult it is to arrive by 7:00 p.m. if returning from Seattle. The motion was not approved. Trolls Den: The Trolls Den is having piano music on the 2 nd, 4 th and 5 th (when occurring) Friday of each month. Please come out to the Trolls Den on these Fridays to enjoy Diana Wolfe at the piano and let us know what you think. Symra Folk Dance Group On Monday, August 11, Symra, a folk dance group from Norway will perform at Poulsbo Sons of Norway, 1889l - Front St. N.E. Telephone The program will begin at 7 p.m. Symra is one of the most active folk dance groups in Norway. Symra performs all types of Norwegian folk dances: figure dances, song dances, village dances, old-time couple dances as well as historical dances. The group dates back to 1960 and was started by folk dancers from the western part of Norway. Today, the 100 members live in Oslo, but come from all parts of the country. Thus, there is a great variety in the national costumes among the members of Symra. Every year the group travels abroad to visit other folk dance groups or participate in folklore festivals. Among the countries they have visited are USA, Germany, Poland, Belgium, Ireland, the Baltic countries, and all the Scandinavian countries including Iceland and Faroe Islands. Symra is going to teach at Norsk Folkedans Stemne near Arlington at Camp Brotherhood Aug 15, 16, and 17. A stemne is a gathering of folk dancers and musicians sharing their knowledge of dances and music. Symra will be carrying on this living tradition at Camp Brotherhood. A sizeable group of folk dancers from Poulsbo, both Leikarringen and adult dancers, will be at the stemne. The group is offering a folk dance workshop at 3 p.m. on Aug 11 th at Poulsbo Sons of Norway. A potluck will follow the workshop for folk dancers and Sons of Norway members. 5 Bingo Buzz HELP IS NEEDED!!!! Bingo at the Sons of Norway is a popular place to be on Wednesday evenings. Early Bird games begin at 6:00 followed by our regular games and jackpots at 6:30. We offer a $500 progressive blackout jackpot, starting at 54 numbers. Bingo at the Sons is a family event where people look forward to seeing and being with their friends. Bingo profits provide almost $20,000 yearly to our Lodge. In addition to the income to the Lodge from the games, it is also receiving money from our sales of hamburgers, hot dogs, sandwiches, salads, popcorn, chips, candy, desserts, and beverages that are sold. We have a new cook and he provides a special sandwich each session. We REALLY need more volunteers to help on Wednesday evenings. Please let Diane know if you would like to volunteer once a month either with bingo or selling food at our bingo sessions. We hope more players will join us on Wednesday evenings for a time of fun and friendship, and to support our Lodge. We look forward to seeing you there.
